Peng should qualify in Sydney, looks quite an easy draw, dare i tempt fate... :S lol good luck

Shuai crushed her competition in the qualifying for Sydney, especially the final round against Chladkova beating her 6-1, 6-2!

On top of all this she even got 1 of the 2 best spots in the MD! She plays Mashona Washington (another qualifier) in the first round and should beat her. The she has the oppurtunity to play Myskina!!!! That should be a great experience and I even think she has a shot against her.

According to the current rankings, Shuai has reached a new highest ranking, 67th!! She's above Li Na, who is also career best 70 at the moment, before playing 2nd round at Hobart, and Zheng Jie who is now a lowly 80/81!!

Shuai demolished Myskina 6-1, 6-3!!!!!!!! AMAZING PREFORMANCE!!!

She completely outcalssed Myskina!!!

Groundstrokes aren't a problem for Shuai Peng. She can match it powerwise with (dare I say) mostly anyone. The problem is that the double fisted on both wings is always going to limit your ability to chase down balls. Sydney would have done wonders for her confidence (duh).

Peng's serve was better than I think people gave her credit for. Her 2nd serve was kicking ok. I agree that she needs more bite on her first. But this was in comparison to Nadia in that match. Nadia's serves (2nd especially) weren't doing anything.

I think she is definately one to look out for. Definately no fluke!

Peng took 100 minutes to squeeze past world number 22 Sugiyama, who is 10 years her senior.

The Chinese 19-year-old caused a stir when she beat world number six Anastasia Myskina in Sydney in January.

Seven-times grand slam champion Serena Williams pulled out of the German Open last week with an ankle injury but the field for the $1.3 million clay-court tournament is still strong.

Russian grand slam champions Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina are taking part alongside former world number ones Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, who play on Tuesday.

time has fuelled the growing number of Chinese women stars,
according to Peng Shuai.
Li Ting and Sun Tian Tian won the women's Olympic tennis doubles
gold medal for China in Athens and this has helped raise the profile
of the game, says 19-year-old Peng, who fell in the second round of
the French Open on Wednesday to top-seeded American Lindsay
Davenport.


"Now tennis in China is very popular after the Olympic doubles gold,
many people have become interested and want to do the same," she
said.

While women's tennis is booming in China the men's sport is slower
to break through. "China has a lot of boys playing but it seems to
be slower to come through," she added.

Competing in her first French Open, 43rd-ranked Peng pushed world
number one Davenport before falling 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 in an hour
and 37 minutes.

Peng admitted she had succumbed to nerves, while serving for the
match in the 10th game of the second set.

"In the second set when I was serving at 5-4 and I was 30-15 up I
was thinking `if it goes down the line I have two match points'. She
was the number one seed and I had this chance.

"Afterwards I kept thinking about this point. Lindsay is a very good
player, and she got some really good points in the tie-break, and
maybe I got a little tired."

Peng Shuai plays by herself, i think maybe she'll appear earlier than the others.

I really hope Shuai can play the Fed Cup play-offs for China. Na is apparently still injured, so she probably won't be able to play. In this case, who will play singles for China, other than Jie? :confused:

Chinese teenager Peng Shuai upset third-seeded Elena Dementieva 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the Acura Classic in Carlsbad, California.

Peng took advantage of Dementieva's weak serve to break the Russian seven times in 11 games for her third career win - and second this season - over a top-10 opponent. Dementieva is ranked number six by the WTA Tour.

``I'm happy, but I have to keep going,'' said Peng, playing in just her second tournament in more than two months. ``The focus is to get comfortable out on the court.''

The 19-year-old player from Hunan, who resides in Boca Raton, Florida, said she has learned a lot from playing in a number of tough matches this season.

Her biggest career victory came against another Russian, then third-ranked Anastasia Myskina, whom she beat 6-1, 6-3 in the Sydney event in January. She also upset top 10-ranked Nadia Petrova in the same event.

Peng nearly upset top-ranked Lindsay Davenport at the French Open.

She had a 6-3, 5-4 lead, and was ahead 30-15 before succumbing in three sets.

``It was a tough first-round match,'' Dementieva said. ``She has a pretty solid game, the whole package. She's very aggressive from the baseline. She's playing at a high level.''

Second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the top player left after the top-seeded Davenport withdrew with an injury on the eve of the tournament, struggled in her first match before pulling out a 7-5, 6-3 second-round win over Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic.

US OPen champion Kuznetsova, ranked fourth in the world, received a big break when Koukalova double-faulted to end the first set.

Koukalova then committed double faults in the sixth and eighth games of the second set as Kuznetsova took a 5-3 lead before wrapping up the match when Koukalova hit a backhand long.

Kuznetsova, playing her first match since Wimbledon, is one of eight Russians left in the field.

Flavia Pennetta was the only other seeded player to lose.

The 15th seed from Italy lost 6-1, 7-5 to Japan's Akiko Morigami in a second-round match.

In first-round matches, 10th-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France defeated Puerto Rico's Kristina Brandi 6-2, 6-2, and 11th-seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro was a 7-5, 6-0 winner over America's Amy Frazier.

Lost among the headlines of Venus Williams' rebirth and Maria Sharapova's latest endorsement is one of the most intriguing stories in women's tennis this year. It is the story of 19-year-old Shuai Peng of China, who lives and trains in Delray Beach and has leaped from No. 220 to No. 46 since last summer.

With the Beijing Olympics three years away, the Chinese Olympic Committee and other Chinese sports federations have been on the lookout for potential stars. Peng is surely one of them. On Tuesday, she upset No. 6 Elena Dementieva 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of the Acura Classic in San Diego.

Earlier this year, she beat top 10 players Anastasia Myskina and Nadia Petrova in Sydney, was two points from knocking No. 1 Lindsay Davenport out of the French Open, and took former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne to three sets at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C. She started the season No. 80, and continues to rise.

She would probably be ranked even higher if she had not been required by the Chinese Tennis Federation to miss 10 weeks from May to July so that she could compete in the Chinese National Olympics, which overlapped with Wimbledon.

''I really wanted to play Wimbledon,'' Peng said. ``But my team needed me. It was a difficult decision.''

Peng's coach, Alan Ma, a former Davis Cup player for Chinese Taipei, said: ``Chinese players had to miss Wimbledon because these are events that affect two billion people.''

Peng and the rest of China's players also will miss all the tournaments in October, including the Guangzhou Open, because it is mandatory for them to compete in the final stages of the Chinese National Olympics.

Dementieva often practices with Peng and is impressed by her power. ''She's very aggressive and hits a heavy ball,'' Dementieva said.

Peng trains at the International Tennis Academy in Delray Beach, which was established in 1996 and has helped other pros such as Sebastian Grosjean and Cyril Saulnier of France.

Peng's success, combined with that of Li Na (No. 40) and Zheng Jie (No. 78), give Chinese tennis fans reason to be hopeful for a medal in Beijing

Peng Shocks Clijsters in Quarterfinal Match

Fans at the 2005 Acura Classic have seen a new star emerge in women’s professional tennis. Remember the name Shuai Peng because you will definitely be hearing more of her in the future.

Earlier this year Peng, who hails from China, showed flashes of brilliance as she defeated the former number three player in the world, Anastasia Myskina of Russia.

Peng also had near upsets against the likes of Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin-Hardenne, but in each instance she fell in defeat.

On Friday night in her quarterfinal against seventh-seeded Kim Clijsters there was no mistaking who the better player was during the night as Peng scored a convincing 6-4, 6-4, win to advance to the semifinals.

“She’s probably one of the hardest hitters I’ve played,” Clijsters said. “She hits the ball incredibly clean, especially on her backhand side. She played good today, unbelievable.”

In the first set of the match, Peng matched Clijsters stroke for stroke and at 4-4, it was Peng who scored the first break of serve.

In the ninth game which lasted 12 points, Clijsters fought off three break points but on the third deuce point, Peng hit a down the line forehand, which Clijsters failed to return. On the fourth break point, Clijsters lost the game when she sent a forehand wide.

Serving for the first set at 5-4, Peng jumped out to a 40-0 lead but squandered two set points. At 40-30 she stroked a down the line backhand winner to put the set away.

Peng opened the second set with a service break as Clijsters’ forehand clipped the tape on break point.

Later in the set, Peng increased her lead to 4-1 as she broke Clijsters for the third time in the match when the Belgian double faulted on break point.

Despite losing three of the next four games as Clijsters got one service break back and held serve at love, Peng kept the pressure on her and served out the match at 5-4.

On the first match point of the evening, Clijsters slice backhand found the net.

“I gave everything I had and it wasn’t good enough,” Clijsters said. “On a short cross court, she can flick it and there aren’t too many girls that can do that. She’s a great player.”

Clijsters praised Peng during her post-match conference. “I think she has a great future ahead of her. She’s been the best player I’ve played in a long time. I think she can definitely become top three.”

Pierce Shuts Down Peng to Reach Final

Coming into her Saturday morning semifinal match against unseeded Shuai Peng of China, sixth-seeded Mary Pierce knew she would have to play aggressively and hit the ball hard if she was to advance to Sunday’s final.
She executed her strategy to near perfection as she routed Peng, 6-2, 6-2, in 65 minutes on Stadium Court.

“I’m happy with the way I started out the match,” Pierce said. “I was playing well. She’s a dangerous player.”

Things did not begin well for Peng as she opened the match with a double fault and lost the first game at love.

With Pierce leading 2-1, she lost a total of three points in the next three games to open up a 5-1 lead.

Peng, who dictated play in her semifinal win over Kim Clijsters, did not have the spring in her step that she had the night before as Pierce kept her on the defensive.

“I definitely had to stay on top of things and stay aggressive,” Pierce said.

At 5-2, Pierce served for the match, but fell behind 40-0. She fought off six break points and on the third deuce of the game, she fired two consecutive aces to clinch the set.

Peng dropped her serve to open the second set as she double faulted on break point. Peng proceeded to lose four of the next five games to fall behind 5-1.

Pierce did not drop serve the entire match and lost only five service points in the second set. At 5-2, she hit an ace and served out the match at love.

When asked what it would mean to her to win the Acura Classic, Pierce said, “It would be really special. I love this tournament. I love playing here and I’ve never won it.”

thats a funny thing u mention abt peng listed as amature because ive noticed that since i first search for pengs profile years ago, n yes she is still listed as 'amature' in wta.com.
i dont know exactly the process of turning pro, but i would think its an error that they just havnt fix up.

i read d article n i was surprised that kim actually complimented peng's serve, i guess she has improved this area of her game. i always though her serves and her volleys was d weakess part of her game. Keep up d good work shaui! ;)

i would think so that fatigue played a part in her loss, but i wonder if she was mentally exhaust aswell after knockin off a couple of top players in a row and being in the semifinal of a tier 1 tornament for the first time.
