Well it never attracts that strong a field, simply becuase it is on carpet and it is straight after the Australian Open - looks like another Pan Pacific Open title for Lindsay!

Dec 9th, 2004, 11:00 AM
This should be a Tier II  . S'Hertogenbosch or Luxembourg (both Tier III's) in the past have attracted better players.

Veritas
Dec 9th, 2004, 11:08 AM
I think it would be more sensible to either change the tournament into a Tier II and transform the AIG Japan Open into a Tier I; or play around with the schedule so that it's not straight after the Aussie Open. Toray Pan Pacific's been suffering a bit from a lack of high profile turn-outs these days.

I miss the good old days with Davenport and Hingis battling for this title:sad:... I always loved this tournament! If Davenport wins this, it will be either her or Hingis who won this title in the last.. 9 years:eek:!!! How incredible:D!!!!! GO LINDSAY:D!!!

A lot of people forget that the Pan Pacific once attracted awesome fields. Former WTA head Gerry Smith once mentioned that the tournament had the best field of any non-Slam event one year. He was probably right, as Graf, Navratilova, Seles, and Sabatini were all playing that year (Sabatini ended up beating Navratilova in the final, I believe).

what about Filderstadt;)!

Yep, there´s no doubt Filderstadt is the Tier II tourney with the best field...often better than a Tier I and the players like it as well, besides in 2006 Germany will lose its only Tier I tourney to Doha, kinda sad...ok german players are kinda sad but still

thank god k-lina skipped it tho...it's at such a bad time in the schedule too...

Fantastic
Dec 9th, 2004, 02:16 PM
The tournament has met its criteria of providing at least one Top 3 player in the field, the No. 1 no less. It also wooed three of the Top 6 players, so it's quite strong considering that it's straight after a Grand Slam. The tournament still manages to provide the same amount of prize money year after year, proving that despite the weaker draw at the bottom of the field, it's still a popular tournament that Japanese tennis fans like to attend.

bullshit
there has never been or will never be a better tier III field then this. u're just exaggerating the weak field of toray. plus how many top players show up ain't the only factor that would decide which tier the tournament belongs to. Toray has such a long history n has boasted verry strong fileds in the past. It's just only the past few years that it has failed to attract enough top players for a tier I.
Just because it's not strong enough a field for a tier I, some of u r jus makin bullshit remarks about how weak the tournament is. Luxemburg or strasborg or whatever the fuck is, Toray will never ever be inferior to those unimportant tour events.

Lindsay is playing Hopman and Sydney, and the AO and Tokyo - you just gotta think she is going to be very lucky to make it without worrying one of her injuries.

Why do people think that is a weak field? It has 4 of the world top 6 including the number 1 and 2 of the top contenders for 2005 number 1. Its fine at the SF stage and better than it has been in many past years where one or two top 6 players was all it saw.. The weakness is that they are not supported by the players ranked 7-20 which is odd given that some of those are not playing Hopman or Sydney and most of them won't go that far in the AO either. You would think they didn't like playing.

she played from wimbledon to the end of the year with only that 1 injury at the US open, which didnt aggrovate after that tourney - her knees held up really well, so im opeful for her. she has her own personal physio teams with her all the time now, so shes in constant good hands...

No wiliams sister this year? I'm so disappointed!

Well, due to injury Venus had to pull out
of her QF match-up with Chanda so she's
really not going to be losing that many points.

With a better showing at the OZ Open next
month she'll make up for it.

The field is pretty good.

I think it would be great to hold this event as part of the Asian leg after the US Open. Next to Shanhghai- this would alow 2 Tier 2 or above events ni the region. It could also be indoors (leading into indoor Euro season) or outdoors

she had to pull out of sydney semi-final against mauresmo

she shouldn't play the hopman- its just too much

I was thinking more that it ws an awful lot of play without breaks and though she played from Wimbledon to the end of the year her body didn't make it when it really mattered at either GS. it may not be a matter of how much she plays though as you say. i suppose if you are thinking about retirement you might go out and play all the tournaments that have good memories for you and take a break when you get to the (sandy) ones you don't have such good memories of.

she shouldn't play the hopman- its just too much No. She had to puul out of the Sydney SF against Henin-Hardenne. And the injury wasn't serious, just a precaution. The injury was not caused by overplaying either, just bad luck.

I think the field is OK.
Maggie should have a good chance to defend some of her points. :)
I remember the times when Davenport, Hingis, Novotna and Graf were playing here simultaniceally.

There are a lot of articles about Maria challenging Lindsay as she goes for a record fifth title here, but Maria was there - and lost - last year. What a load of hype. I realise that Maria is much improved from last year, but they way the articles are written it's as if she's making a first appearance.

Good luck Lindsay! This is certainly more of a task than last years win in which her longest match was 58 minutes [against Maleeva]. I'm confident though.

seriously...this should be a tier ii (some tier iiis are stronger :o )

Why? Four of the top 6 are committed. The tournament still manages to sell tickets and thus attract enough sponsers to raise money to fulfil Tier I requirements. What more do you want?

And while we're at it, why don't you start listing Tier III tournaments that can snatch a world no.1 plus three other top 6 players? :)
