YAY!! This more than likely means Monica will play the Australian circuit in January! She's not going to fly all the way down there for two exhibition matches.

Dec 8th, 2004, 12:11 AM
It'd be cool if Martina and Monica played a couple doubles tournaments together next year, maybe at Tokyo or something like that.

Tennis legends coming to NZ

Dec 8, 2004 By Alan Granville

Between them they have won 67 Grand Slam titles and collected $50m in prize money - now Monica Seles and Martina Navratilova are coming to New Zealand to wow tennis fans in February.

The legends of the women's game will play two exhibition matches in Auckland and Christchurch.

Neither player has ever played tennis in New Zealand, although Navratilova was on holiday here once in Christchurch in 1980.

She admitted she is excited to be coming.

"It will be my privilege to be playing there and to bring live tennis to an audience who don't get to see much live tennis unless they go out of the country. It will be good to spread the goodwill of tennis around the world,' said the former world number one.

The duo will play at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland on February 1 and Christchurch's Westpac Centre on February 3.

Navratilova has one of the most phenomenal records ever by a tennis player.

She has won 167 singles title, including 16 Grand Slams, 174 doubles competitions and is still playing professionally at the age of 48.

Seles has picked up 53 tournament singles victories in her career.

The 31-year-old has not played since the French Open last year as she battled a long-term leg injury during 2004.

The two are good friends, living only 30 minutes from each other in Florida, but Navratilova believes the New Zealand public will get to see competitive games.

"We saw each other a couple of weeks ago. Yes we are friendly. We are competitive but most of all we want to put on a good show. The crowd does not care who will win."

She believes exhibition games are worse than normal tournament matches.

"When you play tournament tennis you just want to win, you don't care how bad it looks. But when you play exhibition matches, people come to watch just that one match and they want to see a really good show so you have to perform, it is worse that way.

"For me to be on the same court as Monica is a privilege. It's an honour to be on the same court as another champion. Hopefully we will put on a good show and may the best woman win!"

The exhibition series was set up by former Kiwi number one Brenda Perry.

She believes the two players will out on a great show of tennis for fans.

"When you have two players who have achieved what they have achieved, they never walk onto the court without pride in the way they perform. They will compete down to that last ball.

"It's been nine months of work to get this set-up and it is fantastic to have these two players here. They have both inspired many people around the world."

Navratilova and Seles to play in NZ
08 December 2004

Two of the biggest names in women's tennis are to play in New Zealand next year.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles will play two exhibition matches in February, it was announced today. It will be the first time either of the former world No. 1's have been to New Zealand to play tennis, with the first match in Auckland on February 1, followed by a rematch on February 3 in Christchurch.

Today's joint statement from Auckland Tennis and Canterbury Tennis follows the top-class men's field assembled for the Heineken Open in January.

Navratilova is recognised as one of the world's most phenomenal athletes and has won 58 grand slam titles in a career that has spanned over 30 years.

She has also won 167 singles titles on the WTA Tour, which is the most won by any man or woman in the history of tennis, and 173 doubles titles. She is one of few players to have been ranked Number 1 in both singles and doubles concurrently.

Navratilova, 48, played in the women's doubles at the Athens Olympics and is still playing mixed doubles on the professional circuit.

In 1990 a 16-year-old Seles won her first grand slam singles title after beating Graf - making her the youngest French Open champion to date.

She eventually carried on to win 53 career titles and spent 178 weeks as world No 1.
