UPDATED FAN ZONE FOR THESE LADIES! :wavey:
All are welcome to cheer them on here. :)

Yeah, why not?
Its stupid to start a whole new forum just for one person (like the Kournikova fans did)
And someone on here started up a Bela-Russian cheering thread. Though nobody uses it anymore.

Julian

WOOHOO!!! GO TATIANA!! :D

BTW, can we also cheer for Iroda Tulyaganova here?? ;)

tenn_ace
Mar 22nd, 2002, 12:07 PM
as long as she doesn't mind. It seems that people (especially new generation) from former Soviet republics have to get offended when they are somehow mixed with Russians. Just my opinion.

Mar 22nd, 2002, 12:59 PM
Well, in US we all are just Russians :)

I don't mind cheering for some of them
especially ones from Belarus.

I also got a soft spot for Irina Selyutina/ Iroda Tulyaganova as well as a few others.

15 yr old Anna Chekvetadze is of Georgian origin and represents Russia.

It all depends on each person's view. But I can say is that Russians view of other states is more tolerant than they have of Russia.

Davai Iroda.

I wish Iroda a speedy recovery! She has been so thoughtful in telling her fans how she is! GOOD LUCK IRODA!!

And as for Tatiana, I think she doesn't speak Russian (she speaks Ukranian?), but Ukraine WAS once part of the former Soviet Union! Hope she finds her form in her next tourney! :)

Actually, can someone tell me the differential between Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Belarus?? Are the people all nice to each other or do they consider themselves seperated as independent countries? Sorry, I don't really know. :)

Cassius
Apr 17th, 2002, 02:11 AM
JULIAN, I think all the girls from former-Soviet countries would speak (at least basic) Russian.
Obviously Russia, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Belarus and the other 11 (I think) former-Soviet countries are seperate (whether they're all completely independent, I'm not so sure about), but I'm from England so I don't know if they actually LIKE each other.

Good luck to Irina Selyutina/Samantha Reeves in doubles in Warsaw. :D Never seen Irina play but Samantha reminds me of Nastya by talking to herself and the crowd about her play or the situation. Quite entertaining. In fact, Nastya autographed my program right near Samantha's autograph.

Sad for Tatiana Perebiynis

Iroda wins in spectacular style!!!!!!!:D  :D .
6-4 6-0.
If I'm honest, I rather expected her opponent (Gala Leon Garcia) to do better and put up more of a fight. I don't know if Garcia was injured slightly in the 2nd set or whether Iroda was just too strong.
Hopefully it was the latter:D .

GOOD LUCK IN THE SECOND ROUND!!!!!!!!! :bounce: :wavey: .

Irina is playing at Birmingham and is teamed with Nannie DeVilliers (sounds like a name that Disney would use in a movie) for doubles.

I don't know how I missed that Irina was in Birmingham! The 3 Ladies of this thread must have gotten annoyed at being lumped all together here, so they all scattered in different directions this week to spite us. ;)

In any case, Irina lost to Rita. Good luck to her in her Disney Doubles team! :)

:wavey: Janie. Honestly, I could not remember which tournament draw I saw Irina's name in. I thought it was Tashkent but when I looked again, I was shocked she was at Birmingham. She played well against Rita.

That is cute name for her doubles. :)

Great win for Tatiana! I looked at her Junior results just yesterday and can't believe how good she was! I'm very sad for Dinara as I am also a fan of hers, but Tatiana really needed this win. :)

Irish
Jun 13th, 2002, 10:27 PM
Wow, that was a close match between Tatiana and Dinara!!!

Good luck tomorrow Iroda!!!

In the Jul/Aug Tennis magazine, they have a section on Wimbledon and one article is called,"Snakes in the Grass" 'Look for one of these dark horses to pull off an upset or two'

One of the four women named was Iroda. About her, it said, "This 20-year-old from Uzbekistan thrives on turf: She won the Wimbledon juniors in 1999 over Krasnoroutskaya and reached the semifinals at 's-Hertogenbosch and the third round of the Wimbledon main draw last year."

auntie janie
Jun 14th, 2002, 01:15 PM
Wow, I had not heard this result! Here's what the WTA site says:

Tatiana Perebiyunis beat Dinara Safina 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6). Safina, the 16-year-old sister of men's tennis star Marat Safin, jumped to a 5-2 lead in the third set, but the Perebiyunis broke back in the ninth game.

Safina led 5-2 in the tiebreaker before losing four consecutive points.

Tatiana is really a fighter, isn't she? :)

auntie janie
Jun 14th, 2002, 01:17 PM
PS - Irish -- so who are the other 3 women snakes in the grass???

auntie janie
Jun 14th, 2002, 08:07 PM
Our Tatiana bowed out today, but Our IRODA advanced with a tough 3-set win over Majoli, 7-5 in the 3rd! Can Iroda be finding her form again at last?

Irish
Jun 14th, 2002, 10:23 PM
:wavey: Janie

The other three "Snakes in the Grass" are Barbara Schwartz, Lina Krasnoroutskaya, and Tamarine Tanasugarn.

Wow, what an impressive win over Patty Schnyder. I knew it would be a tough one. But unfortunately, she and another fav are on a collision course to possibly play in the final of Vienna.

I wonder why Irina Selyutina is doing so poorly this year?
she did so well in the challengers last year and I thought she was ready to make her breakthrough in the pro's, but she has only won 1 main draw match this year... I saw her for the first time in Toronto last year and instantly liked her. :) I hope she can win some matches at Wimby! :D

TheBoiledEgg

She should have played more challengers as well this yr
she's played too much on main tour and now she's lacking in confidence.

I saw her last week and she seems content still, hope she can turn things around.
Some challengers she's played this yr haven't gone well either, she should have played some earlier in yr

Extremely bad timing on the injury of Iroda. The doctors wedict sounds like a near katastrophy. Perhaps it would have been better to take the sommer off instead of hurrying to get halv fit for Wimbledon.

I really wish I knew what`s up with Iroda. There can be a result of changing coach in the middle of the season, but she has been coached by the same coach at least since the end of May. I suspect it is a problem who must be solved inside her head. The way she lost this match was nearly frightening. World record in unforced errors:fiery:
Next question is of course why this happends now. If she and the rest of the Tulyaganova Team can ask the right questions, they can solve it before it grews biger.
Iroda has earlier said that after a bad match, she goes home and thinks about her mistakes. That is probably not the way to go on a long terme.

Irodaīs match against Davenport in Nea Haven gave us a sign that she is running into form. After the match this came from AP:
It was their first meeting, and Davenport admitted being unprepared for Tulyganova's strong service game. Tulyganova recorded eight aces and several service winners.
'I just had difficulties,' Davenport said. 'Not many girls serve between 110 and 115 miles per hour. I haven't played somebody that served quite that hard except maybe Venus (Williams).

What we didnīt like to see was Iroda feeling something in her elbow.

salima

Of course TBE, Irodas ranking could and should be improved. As she is coming back from yet another injury break the Asian Games could be the right tournament to get a much needed comfidence booster. I feel that Tulyaganova has played with a burden on her shoulders the last half year, and not even she can perform her best under a heavy burden.

Sorry janie, i didnīt see this until now.
She has not performed as well as expected this year, of various resons, illness, injuries, change of coach. The pressure of performing up to your best every week can turn into a burden. Like a heavy stone at your shouldres it prevent you from feeling free.( I know i could expl. It better in my own language). Iroda is known to have a happy soul, and that has allways been to her advantige. It is like: The more you think the poorer you play, in tennis and in many other faces of life.

Play, donīt worry Iroda

This thread actually started with a question -- I asked the community here, was it okay if we cheer for players such as Iroda, who are not from Russia, here in Russian Roulette? From there it evolved into a cheering thread for some of those players. :)

Feel free to start a new thread featuring just one of these players! No one will mind!

Sorry for the late answer.
I guess I was misunderstood again... :o
I was trying to be ironic about the fact that, in the same thread, there were people cheering for a player to win, and to lose (as they were cheering for her opponent).
But I love this thread, and I like Iroda too (as she was borned the following day I did).
