In this week's Trans World Sport there are brief highlights of the WTA Tour Championships final, together with footage from a wonderful documentary about Maria that was televised in full in early 2002.

It was very obvious that Serena Williams's serve had gone soft by the end of that match.

For those in the UK, Trans World Sport will be repeated on Channel 4 at 4:35am on Thursday night / Friday morning. The bit which is of interest to Maria fans is in the first five minutes.

It's also worth looking out for Trans World Sport in other countries.

Dr. Broad, what would that documentary be?
It was a five-minute documentary about Maria that was on Trans World Sport in about March 2002, when she was 14. It was filmed at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida, and was basically an interview with mostly off-court footage and a bit of practising (no rallies shown). They went inside Maria's bedroom, where she talked about aromatherapy and stamp-collecting. She also did a bit of singing.

Nick Bollettieri said, "She's very determined - she's another Seles. She's not mean to others - by far she's not mean."

Another bit I remember is Maria dismissing comparisons with Anna Kournikova. "I respect all the players on the tour, including Anna, but I just want to be Maria Sharapova and not somebody else."

The way she said "Not everyone gets to experience that" was so cute - I was pleased to see that that bit made it into this week's Trans World Sport.

I hadn't seen Maria play by then, but she was so charming and pretty that I kept a special eye out for her after that. I eventually saw her play at Wimbledon 2003, she showed me then that she was a brilliant player, so that was when I declared myself a Maria fan.
