I couldn't find any pic where you can see Maria's feet, cause she does the same movement as Pete does, before the serve! It's a damn cool serve-style! I love it!

I've noticed the serve similarities too. But Sampras hit his serve harder than Sharapova does. ;)

they also share a lot of letters in their last names

Oizo
Nov 18th, 2004, 08:25 PM
Yes, but the similarity especially at the way they lift their left foot before they blister the serve is awesome! :D If Masha would put the ball in that hole of the racket like Pete does it would have been exactly the same style. :)

She said to her trainer when she was 7: 'I want that serve'..

Oizo
Nov 18th, 2004, 08:38 PM
And it proves to be successful ;)

Yea just the Serve really. nothing else really

Robert Landsdorp coached Pete as well so perhaps that service action is one that he teaches his students.

Oizo
Nov 18th, 2004, 08:59 PM
That must be the reason then. The secret is lifted.

Yes, they talked about this on Eurosport during the YEC. It's a pretty distinctive action.

Does someone know if Masha admires any tennis player?

GermanBoy
Nov 18th, 2004, 10:01 PM
Nothing! Pete Sampras is sexy and Sharapova not...

that serve style is really often used, many people on both tours do it, and also, i was taught to do the exact same thing when i served, it's awesome

Oizo
Nov 19th, 2004, 12:41 AM
I find that serve awesome too! It's brilliant! If I'd play I'd use it too!

That's not the only common point, Maria has this forehand ending above her head which is typically Sampras like. I'm trying to find pics to illustrate this but those who REALLY watch tennis know what I'm talking about.

And now Maria is trying to go for serve and volley, who was the grandmaster of S&V ?

Look at this : http://www.mariaworld.net/wtachamps04129.jpg and this : http://www.samprasfanz.com/gallery/2002us7/r734bh.jpg

For me it makes no doubt that Maria is modelling a large part of her game on Sampras

Actually it was a big struggle to find this one. Now I have another to find a Sampras' forehand end of motion, as well. That's really strange because it's a very typical image I have from The King.

I know, I searched so much but then I gave up to find one with masha's feet. where did you find it btw? :)

That's true, currently, but I would bet a lot of dollars that in one year or two you couldn't say that anymore.

Great comparisons. Well spotted.

The only difference I can see in the serve positions is that Maria holds the ball to the side of the racquet head and Pete holds it at the junction.

Oizo
Nov 19th, 2004, 07:55 PM
Yes, that is the one difference. :)

Somebody asked if Maria admired anybody as a tennis player. The one answer I remember is that she couldn't watch any TV as a child, so she couldn't see much professional tennis. But, she did say that she admires people who make a habit of winning a lot, so she probably best liked Sampras, Navratilova, etc.

About their game: absolutely nothing in common!

It's more than simply nicking a good serve style. There's
a brain behind it too. Alexandra Stevenson has the same
serve as Sampras and Maria. It hasn't helped her get
beyond that one WIMBLEDON semi final!

Oizo
