She probably wants to punch the REWIND button on the Pilot Pen and the US Open, but otherwise, a very strong year. OK, an exceptional year for someone who started the year ranked #32.

I'm just soooo happy for her!! This has been a dream year for her, and to end it the way she did is amazing. Really well deserved. Hopefully she can come back next year with even greater poise and even greater hunger. I'm really looking forward to 05 and seeing whether she can follow this year up. Meanwhile guys, I must say that I will be posting very little on here for the next month or two until the Australian circuit. The wta season has come to a close and with it I shall depart for a while. It's been great cheering for Masha with you guys. See you guys in January!

Monica Seles probably beats her in terms of pace, but otherwise, their careers have many similarities. Even the background, Eastern European, Florida, Bollittieri are similar. So is the grunting :).

But seriously, Monica won her first six finals (and 8 of her first 9), so did Maria. Both won GS titles at a young age. Both are scrappy, tenacious fighters, and both go for outright winners.

I can't wait till next year, when Maria arrives in Melbourne with loads of confidence.

She also leads the money race while playing less than a full schedule. Quite a feat.

Nothing like winning a major, which is usually a million dollar purse, give (Wimbledon) or take a few quid. Even JHH is a top money earner for winning the Australian championships alone. But Maria tops them all with Wimbledon and the YEC, which is considered a major, too.

For 2004:
With 2 'major' win, if she asked for more... the other girls gonna kill her :)
So, like she said... it's an amazing year for 17 yo girl.

For 2005:
She could be #1 before Wimbledon.
The reason is because 'only' about 900 point to defend for half a year.
If she can play consistently with quality like in Wimbledon, or like in Oct.-Nov. this year, maybe a bit more or less... I don't see why not.
Statistically speaking, if she can cut down Unforced Errors on every match, she'll be very hard to beat. Most of the time she has more winner than her opponents, even when she lost.
Of course it's not easy with her style of play, but who knows.

BTW, I'm new here.
My last favorite WTA players were Van Roost, Coetzer, and Seles.
It's been a while since I watch WTA matches.
Last time I watched I think '99 Roland Garros.
If I remember correctly, someone shouted to Steffi Graf, "Steffi, will you marry me".
She answered, "How much money you got?".
The first time I saw Steffi was having fun like that.
Or maybe that was the day when Hingis cried like a baby when lost to Graf in final, after she had match point in 2nd set, but blew it off before lost in 3rd set.

So... hello everybody ! :wavey:

Hmm... here's a useless fact I just discovered...

In all the matches Maria's played this year, when she's lost the first set in a tiebreak, she's gone down hard in the second set.

Tokyo (Pan Pacific)
Hantuchova def Sharapova 7-6(6) 6-1

Memphis
Zvonareva def Sharapova 7-6(5) 6-2

Rome
Farina-Elia def Sharapova 7-6(3) 6-0

Do you guys think maybe this is something she could work on? Maybe, but all of these losses were in the first half of the year, before she really got going.

Having watched the Wimbledon SF against Davenport again last night for the 1st time since the actual night it was on, im changing my BEST MATCH OF THE YEAR to that one and the Final equal..
The 1st time I saw it I was a bit nervous to enjoy it as much plus it was 2am or something, It was the best match Ive seen Maria play this year...big serving, brilliant winners from everywhere and she had to adjust her game a couple of times to overcome Lindsays strengths..seeing the matches again you really notice things you didnt before..
..and to top it off Maria was very relaxed and enjoying herself with the odd smile and funny squeal after making an error plus after the match in the interview she sadi she was just out there to enjoy herslef because she knew she was up against a very experienced opponent who had been there many times before..
People (haters) say Maria didnt earn this win and that the rain delay put Lindsay off but I can say the 2nd set and tiebreak was one of the best sets ive ever seen especially from a 17y/o in her 1st GS SF..

Maria wins the 2nd set..:D

Yeah Dan the Wimby SF was my vote for the best match of the year by her.

- She was still a relative unknown.
- Facing a former champion
- After Davenport built up such a commanding start, Maria was able to wrest control of the match away from her
- She exposed so much in Davenport's game
- She was having fun
- In the third she'd effectively shut Davenport's game out completely... Davenport could only get one more serve hold.
