Watching Iva retire at the YEC yesterday, I realized we lost another one of our active Grand Slam champions. Iva's FO win seems so long ago !

I decided to compare Iva's title run against the 7 women that came after her ... Which woman had the most impressive run? Factors should include form going into RG, quality of opponents, quality of matches played, significance of win !

Anastacia Myskina 2004

128W Alicia MOLIK (AUS) 4-6 6-3 6-4
64W Barbora STRYCOVA (CZE) 6-0 6-4
32W Denisa CHLADKOVA (CZE) 6-3 7-6(3)

SFW Jennifer CAPRIATI (USA) 6-2 6-2
FRW Elena DEMENTIEVA (RUS) 6-1 6-2

All though the last three opponents were not-exactly-at-their-best, the quality of opponents in this one is probably the best

Steffi Graf 1999

28W Magdalena MALEEVA (BUL) 6-2 6-0
64W Ines GORROCHATEGUI (ARG) 6-2 6-4
32W Asa CARLSSON (SWE) 6-1 6-4
16W Anna KOURNIKOVA (RUS) 6-3 7-6(4)
QFW Lindsay DAVENPORT (USA) 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3
SFW Monica SELES (USA) 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4
FRW Martina HINGIS (SUI) 4-6 7-5 6-2

I would vote for this one. Very solid and the last three three-set wins were very impressive

Most Impressive

Mary - Overcoming the pressure put on her by the French crowd ... pulling out one of her only wins over Hingis ... the quarter with Monica was an AWESOME match - balls going in every corner of the court - definitely more winners than UE

Steffi - The final w/ Martina was unbelievable. Quarter with Monica also very high quality

Least Impressive

Myskina - Good win over Sveta but the final 3 matches were not very high quality, bad reaction to winning first GS title

Justine - Using the Hand tactic to go over Serena in the SF and then an uneventful final against the braidsmaid

I feel bad for Monica for not being able to beat ASV in that 1998 final ... she should have won the first set but for a stupid overrule or something ... Also she just came back from her dad's death

Feel sorry for Martina, Kim, Venus, Amelie for not being able to win

I don´t know...I am too biased to vote here, probably Steffi (that final was sooo funny!). I am just happy that Justine and Nastya are part of this great group of winners!!!

I said Pierce. But Graf, Jennifer, and ASV's runs were quite nice.

I voted for Cappy, but Serena's tennis was actually the best by far. And that year's US Open was just:o ...

Steffi for sure, she beat Anna (hey she was actually good back then), Lindsay, Monica and the Martina, those were the big names back in 1999.
The final was also my favorite all time match :)

I voted for Steffi, but marys is pretty close and maybe i should have voted for her cause shes such a head case that you expect her to lose more than Graf. But Steffi's meant more to me as she was at the very end of her career and didnt have the run going into the french that Mary did...Steffis was so unexpected

wow i didnt know steffi and mon played in the semis in 99,score seems like it was good, great run too.

I remember watchign Pierces q SF and F matches and she was great.remember that amazing lob she hit through her legs on the run and lobbed Monica??? That was the best shot in tennis i have ever seen and think I ever will see.

Jens run was also great since she lost in round 1 the year prior she beat serena in a great QF and played another great match against marty and fouhgt her guts out to win that final against Kimmy.

Mary's run was very impressive, given who she beat and overcoming the French crowd. Graf was probably the most impressive...and also because she had no idea she would be there. She played AWESOME tennis.

Majoli - Gawd I loved this match. Hingis was NOT affected by an injury (as many people believed). Please...the French is THE most grueling tennis event without question. Hingis made it to the Final so she was impressive in getting there. Hingis just happened to run into someone who was IN THE ZONE that day. She was hitting blistering winners all over the place, and simply could not do anything badly. It was an awesome final and a well deserved win. Gonna miss her...she is such a crack up and so much fun.

I am so :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: that I have never seen this match and this shot !!!! Considering Mary lost the first set in this match, this shot probably gave her alot of confidence

Definitely Graf's victory in 99
beating 3 top players en route to her last GS win

I voted for Graf.

Although Myskina played very high quality opponents in the final 4 rounds, I don't think she really had to work like Graf did. Graf also beat very good clay courters whereas Venus, Sveta, and Elena D. don't have much clay prowess.
