LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - More than 10 years after a bitter divorce that led him to seek bankruptcy protection, actor Burt Reynolds is embroiled in another nasty battle with his latest former girlfriend involving claims of extortion, abuse and broken promises.

Reynolds, 68, and his ex-girlfriend Pamela Seals launched twin lawsuits this week in the Florida and California courts respectively following the demise of their 12-year relationship.

Reynolds, star of the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, claims that Seals, who was a cocktail waitress when he met her, is trying to extort support payments for life and half his Florida ranch in return for not making "false claims" of abuse.

Seals, 48, claims Reynolds beat, strangled, shoved and "stomped on her toes," and that he failed to honor a promise to take care of her and her mother for life. She also claims the actor binged on prescription drugs. The pair never married and ended their relationship in early 2004.

Reynolds' affair with Seals prompted his widely publicized divorce from actress Loni Anderson (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/celeb/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Loni%20Anderson%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw)) in 1993 that eventually forced him to file for bankruptcy with debts of several million dollars. In 1997 he won an Oscar nomination for his role in "Boogie Nights."

Reynolds has denied abuse and says he gave Seals cars, jewelry, clothing and vast sums of cash during their time together and that she had repaid him with threats to embarrass him and harm his career.

"It is very unfortunate that our relationship has ended and I wish Miss Seals well, but I cannot, and will not, be intimidated by false accusations," Reynolds said in a statement.
