Yes I know that comes to 26, so it may be that the top six players get a bye in the 1st round.

The asterisk indicates that their points total in the Junior Winter Grand Prix totals are such that they may play the Masters event in Redbridge, if they get knocked out of Sutton by Thursday.

bluepastures, are you gonna get down to see any of these matches d'ya think? Would be interested to see how Melanie South gets on.

No, don't think I will be going there. As I work during the week. I could go only on Saturday, but am instead planning to go to Redbridge to watch the u-18 masters (where South will probably be by the weekend anyway, and she looked highly impressive in winning the under 16 event on Sunday). The line-up should also include the likes of Lena Keothavong, Claire Ricketts, Mhairi Neish and Anna Hawkins, depending on their other commitments. Possibly Hannah Grady too, but did someone say she's abroad at the moment?

Anyway onto the draw (2nd round, the first round is self-explanatory)

Melissa Berry V Rebecca Dandeniya/ Melanie South
Rebecca Rankin/ Kirsten Laidler V Lynsey Davison/ Frances Hendry
Eva Erbova V Clara Udofa/ Amber Silverstone
Clare (?) Goldring/ Helen Broome V Chantal Coombs
Alice Barnes/ K. Williams V Annabel Youthed/ Arabella Martin
Leila Salek/ Kirsty Woolley V Kelly Simkin
Natalie Neri/ Alice MacKenzie V Luisa Cowper/ Qualifier
Julia Wright/ Carly Homewood V Karen Paterson

1st round results:

Melanie South BEAT K. Eaton 6-1, 6-1
Rebecca Rankin BEAT Kirsty Laidler 7-5, 6-2
Lynsey Davison BEAT Frances Hendry 6-4, 6-3 (a shock, really)
C. Udofa BEAT Amber Silverstone 1-6, 6-3, 6-3
(it actually says Silverstone instead of Udofa on BBC digitext, but I assume that's an error)
Helen Broome BEAT Clare Goldring 6-1, 6-2
Alcie Barnes BEAT K. Williams 6-4, 7-5 (surprised Alice had so much trouble with an unranked player)
Annabel Youthed BEAT Arabella Martin 6-2, 6-2
Leila Salek BEAT Kirsty Woolley 2-6, 6-1, 6-3
Alice MacKenzie BEAT Natalie Neri 6-4, 6-2 ( :D an excellent win against a world-ranked player)
Luisa Cowper BEAT Natasha Khan 6-3, 6-2
Carly Homewood BEAT Julia Wright w/o

I went down today and saw some good tennis, and bizarrely, Wayne Arthurs at the bar!

Helen Broome produced a superba battling display to beat tourny favourite Erbova in 3 very close sets.

Rankine had a bye in the semi's - her and Helen were on court when I left.

Luisa Cowper comofortably beat Carly Homewood, as did Alice Barnes who comfortably moved past Kelly Simkin.

Alice and Luisa are fighting it out for the Tour title and it was meant to be a close match, but Alice adopted the same tactics she used to beat Hannah Collin early in the season, ie have a smack at everything, and again it worked to great effect, Alice winning 6-3, 6-0.

Another great day for Barnesy and she should win tomorrow!!!

Rebecca Rankin's bye was actually a walk-over against Melanie South who evidently found it too difficult to rearrange her matches in the junior masters at Redbridge.

I'll post the full results from teletext:

Alice Barnes BEAT Kelly Simkin 6-3, 6-3
