Dementieva Qualifies for WTA Tour Championships

Elena Dementieva becomes third Russian to clinch spot in season-ending Championships at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles in November; three spots still up for grabs ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Two-time Grand Slam finalist Elena Dementieva has earned a spot in the WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche, the Tour announced today. She will be part of an elite eight-player singles field competing November 10-15 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Dementieva, currently fifth in the latest Porsche Race to the Championships singles standings with 3,193 points, secured a place in the field after reaching the finals of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow this past week.

She joins fellow Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina, along with newly crowned world No.1 Lindsay Davenport and recent world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo. Davenport continues to lead the standings with 4,546 points after reaching the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup.

Dementieva will be making her fifth straight appearance in the Championships following her most successful season on the WTA Tour. She reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros and a few months later, her second such final at the US Open. Dementieva has appeared in five finals this season, adding the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami and the Kremlin Cup in Moscow to the Grand Slams, along with a title win at the Gaz de France Stars in Hasselt, Belgium.

Less than a month remains before the Championships begin, and the race for the final three spots in the singles field continues to be extremely tight. Less than 400 points separates the players in positions seven through 11 and three of those players – Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Vera Zvonareva - are competing this week at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich. Justine Henin-Hardenne holds the No.6 spot but has ended her season due to an ongoing illness.

Suarez and Ruano Pascual, the defending Championships doubles winners, are the first doubles team to qualify for the four-team doubles field. Suarez and Ruano Pascual (4,423 points) have held a commanding lead in the doubles standings throughout the summer and are currently 1,457 points in front of second-place Elena Likhovtseva and Kuznetsova (2,966 points). Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs are third with 2,749 points followed by Nadia Petrova and Meghann Shaughnessy with 2,608 points.

The top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams in the final Porsche Race to the Championships standings qualify for the prestigious Championships. The Championships singles winner will earn $1 million in prize money and a Porsche to donate to their favorite charity.

Yeah, she loves playing finals...maybe she should try winning one ;) . Actually it would be nice to finally see her winning one big tourney and not only reaching the finals, she deserved it (I bet she hopes she won´t play a certain fellow russian).

May she be super successful at the YEC. I think many were not sure if she'd even make it this year. But she could end the year ranked No. 4.

That would be amazing! Go Elena! ;)
