this is a surprise (at least for me) but Tati will play Zurich, which IMO is a wrong decision because it's a VERY though tournament and she could have entered a tier II like Linz where she could win more matches

Well I think it's a good descision to play Zurich, at the moment she needs to gain experience and develop her game further and she can do that just as well at ZUrich as she could in e.g. Linz. I just hope that she gets a decent draw for the first few rounds.

Playing ZUrich hopefully means that there will be some TV time for Tati that would be really great :D

I agree with you HTE. Tati's trying to prove now that she can hit with the big girls (like we all kno she can), so i'll support this decision, surprising choice and tough field nevertheless.

allez Tati, you can do anything you set your mind too

Daniela is also playing there! doubles maybe? :p

Many players are withdrawing from Zurich, hopefully not enough will withdraw to bump Tati into the maindraw, because being in qualifying will give her a chance to get a few good wins.

tati, please get through qualifying! especially after playing one match in tokyo.

then, as others have said, see what the main draw looks like. even if the draw is tough, this will be another chance to play a top player (hopefully someone other than serena for the variety) before the end of the year.

golovin def. loit

well, what kind of losers go to see a qualifying match on a sunday morning, 10 a.m.? erm, me, for example. but not too many other people, it seemed... the arena was almost empty, which didn't exactly guarantee a great atmosphere.... http://wtaworld.com/ubb/redface.gif
golovin, though slightly less impressing than i imagined her to be, was always in control in this match, i guess she just didn't have to show more, because loit was bad today. there was a good phase in the 2nd set, where emilie caught up from 1:3 to 3:3 - it probably lasted about as long as the rest of the match. and though loit seemed to get into the match more during that phase, golovin stayed very calm and focused all through the match. loit, meanwhile, threw her racket around, lots of times, smashed balls into the crowd (okay, into those 5 people), and screamed in frustration, which frankly made her look a bit silly at this hour in a qualifying match.

ha! i know how you feel.

even though the surface is different, at least dani had a closer match with maria than at wimbledon. and maria is probably the favorite in the matchup.

but tati. two losses to players ranked below her! and having a lead in all 3 sets! my only consolation is that the two losses were close. she just needs to close out the sets and win those important points. sounds easy. :)

from www.wtatour.com (http://www.wtatour.com) :

The final first-round match contested on Wednesday featured a pair of 16-year-old qualifiers not willing to go down without a fight. Serbia and Montenegro's Ana Ivanovic outlasted France's Tatiana Golovin in a 75 67(2) 76(3) battle that lasted 2 hours, 11 minutes.
Golovin got off to a strong start, taking a 4-1 lead before Ivanovic rattled off four straight games to serve for the set. She lost the next service game to the young Frenchwoman at love but broke right back and served out the first set.

Golovin also held a lead in the second set at 5-3 before Ivanovic again leveled the match at 5-all. The set eventually went to a tie-break where Golovin held steady to even the match.

In the third, it was again Golovin who dashed out to a strong 5-1 lead. However, she served for the match at 5-2, 5-4 and 6-5, holding two match points while serving in the 5-4 game, but failed to close out the match. She then dug herself a 5-0 hole in the tie-break and ultimately squandered her large lead and the match to Ivanovic.

"I was a little bit nervous to start the match, but after a while I became more comfortable," Ivanovic said. "Even when I was down 5-1, I tried to stay calm and believe in myself. This is obviously my biggest win.

"I started the year ranked around 700, but I played a lot of matches in ITF events, sometimes playing eight matches in one week, going through qualies, so that has been good to give me match practice and self-confidence."

Despite being just 16, Golovin has now lost two straight matches to a fellow teen opponent. Along with the loss to Ivanovic - who turns 17 on November 6 - Golovin fell to 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova two weeks ago in the second round at Tokyo [Japan Open].

"I was impressed with her game today," Golovin said. "She definitely has a great future.

"I should've taken my chances because I had big leads in all three sets. But in the end I felt she won it instead of me losing it."

Ivanovic will next have to take on No.7 seed Venus Williams, the highest-ranked player she's ever faced on a tennis court.

"I've never played someone as high-ranked as her, so I'm just going to play my game," Ivanovic said. "I have nothing to lose, so it's going to be a very good experience for me."
