Elton John takes angry swipe at Madonna

Pianist accuses her of lip-synching

Monday, October 4, 2004 Posted: 4:00 PM EDT (2000 GMT)

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- British pop veteran Elton John took a foul-mouthed swipe at Madonna on Monday, saying she cheated her fans by miming on stage.

But the American pop superstar was swift to rubbish his accusation, saying she does not lip-synch or criticise other artists.

While collecting a song-writing award from Q music magazine in London, John suddenly launched into a tirade against Madonna when he discovered she had been nominated for Best Live Act.

"Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds ($134) to see them should be shot," John said in reference to ticket prices for Madonna's Reinvention tour.

"Madonna, best f---ing live act? F--- off," said the singer renowned as much for his outrageous outbursts as he is for his outlandish outfits.

"Since when has lip-synching been live?" he asked.

He ended his outburst by saying: "That's me off her f---ing Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No."

His tirade prompted a swift response from her U.S. spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg who said in a statement: "Madonna does not lip-synch nor does she spend her time trashing other artists.

"She sang every note on her Reinvention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well paid for her hard work."

And Madonna, 46, showed she was not taking John's criticism too seriously.

"Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice ... or naughty," the statement added. Madonna lost out to British band Muse for the Live Act title.

Elton John hit the headlines in Taiwan last month when, confronted by a wall of flashing cameras at Taipei airport, he lashed out at the local media, calling them "rude, vile pigs."

"The televisions and photographers at the airport were the rudest people that I've ever met and I've been to 60 countries," the 57-year-old star said.

His partner, David Furnish, has memorably captured the flamboyant star at his most outrageous and demanding in a fly-on-the-wall documentary appropriately named "Tantrums and Tiaras."

Madonna herself is no stranger to foul-mouthed outbursts -- as the organizers of one of the world's most famous art prizes found out to their cost three years ago.

Britain's Channel Four had to apologize for Madonna's "strong language" when she presented the Turner Prize on live television.

The chemicals they used to glue his hair on have finally worked their way into his brain.

Either that or he's got a new album coming out :tape:.

Celebs like me and Elton often go into our "diva" mode from time to time. It's like PMS and will pass in a couple of months.

I think his tantrums are just getting reported more recently. He has an assistant or someone whom he must have offended, so this person is leaking all this stuff for bucks and revenge. He needs to fire everyone around him and start with a new team, it's the only way to go.

A ton of today's pop tarts lip synch on stage because they basically have shitty voices that don't sound good live because in fact they suck, and they don't take care of their voice. Madonna's a real talent, she doesn't so this, or only does it in an emergency.

Elton's such a bitch! doesn't he have some huge performing deal with Caesars Palace where he gets paid millions and millions to play there when Celine Dion has a day or two off? It's a wonder he agreed to that... Playing second fiddle to another singer!

Elton was at Caesars when I was there in late July. He wanted $250 a ticket no matter where you sat.

First of all no nasty queen is going to try and put down Madonna. Madonna is a legend. While the same can probably be said for Elton John (and I do love his music as well), he is just bitter that at age 45, he couldn't look half as good as Madonna.

That or he's just angry that he never got to make out Britney.

Christmas cards, dearie- you know, the perfunctory Hollywood thing to do. It's rumoured that Helen Lawson has a rather large Christmas Card list, but she's too cheap to buy the stamps, so everyone on her list misses out- except for the living losers from the 1958 Academy Award Best Actress Nominees list...

Christmas has very little to do with Christ these days, anyway... I'm sure she would refer to it as a "holiday card"...

You bet your ass, baby, Liz gets that real, big nice card from me each and every year. I mail hers MYSELF the day after Thanksgiving, and I do it from that prison where Barbara Graham got gassed, so the postmark gives her an extra jibe. I go easy of Debbie, she's not well.

Madonna cannot really sing live, but at least most of the time she tries. I really think Elton is going through something now, because I have never heard him this vocal. Of course he did go off about the American Idol fiasco, but I have never seen him this angry. What a shame.:tape:

 Every time I hear the words "Debbie" or "Debbie Reynolds", I think of that wonderful scene when Shirley MacLaine was on the steps and Meryl Streep was berating her for exposing herself to the boys at a pre-teen birthday party by lifting her skirt:
Shirley: "I DIDN'T LIFT MY SKIRT- I TWIRLED!"
Meryl: "you weren't wearing any underwear mother."

I love the name Debbie, there's something so trashy, but at the same time, so endearing about it. I call all Hollywood actresses with that silly "Deborah" as "Debbie." Deborah Kerr, Debra Winger, they're all Debbie to me. Winger is so totally a "Debbie."
