Everyone suffers an upset from a lower-ranked player. But some are more susceptible than others. Who are the most prone?

Maria Sharapova

i would have said patty but she seems to have overcome that a problem a bit. she has runs where she loses eg from roland garros her losses where to asagoe, a then lower ranked sharapova, gagliardi, frazier, kostanic, harkleroad. she got it together though lately losing to kuznetsova and serena.

I didn't include her (Maria) in the poll because I don't believe her game is up there with the top 10 players at the moment (well, it is, but only on a few surfaces).

Lemonskin didn't put Masha up there because she is a favorite of his and she will get the most votes :tape:

I just put who I thought are pretty much the top 10 best players AT THE MOMENT (not necessarily on the rankings)

No I didnt put her there because she's not at the same level as the top 10 girls at the moment so an upset is more likely/less disastrous

Serena is to me the least prone to an upset. Justine is prone to an uspset, even when she was dominating tennis, because she often plays not really well during her first round.
My answer is Sharapova and Dementieva. And maybe Mauresmo because she's number 1, and so every time she loses it's supposed to be an upset.

I think Elena D and Maria....or Myskina. Serena as everybody said, is the least likely. Serena hasn´t had a bad bad bad loss in years.

Well said about serena, even after a long lay off the lowest ranked player she lost to was maria who was outside the top ten at the time.
Lindsay very rarely loses to players she shouldn't.
Dementieva is one player i never predict result wise, she can beat just about anyone and lose to just about anyone too.
Jen too seems to go walk abouts several times, has lost to the likes of dechy, danilidou, likhoseteva (sp)

I defined an upset as losing to a non-top 10 player at the time

Upsets in 2004:

Mauresmo:

L Schiavone 3-6 7-62 6-1
L Hantuchova 4-6 6-4 6-4
L Molik 7-5 3-6 6-3

Davenport:

L Schnyder 6-3 6-2
L Schaul 2-6 6-0 6-3
L Sharapova 2-6 7-65 6-1

Henin:

L Kuznetsova 6-2 4-6 6-3
L Garbin 7-5 6-4
L Petrova 6-3 6-2

Myskina:

L Shaughnessy 7-62 4-6 6-3
L Molik 6-3 6-3
L Likhovtseva 7-5 1-6 6-3
L Frazier 4-6 6-4 6-4
L Likhovtseva 6-3 5-7 6-4
L Molik 6-3 6-4
L Tchakvetadze 7-6 6-3
L Camerin 6-3 1-6 6-2

Kuznetsova:

L Dechy 7-65 6-4
L Salerni 6-1 6-1
L Sprem 3-6 7-5 6-4 (Kuznetsova was not in top 10 for these 1st 3 losses)
L Razzano 7-64 3-6 6-4
L Dulko 6-4 3-6 6-4
L Zvonareva 6-2 6-3

Dementieva

L Sharapova 6-3 6-4
L Jankovic 6-1 6-4
L Panova 7-6 6-3
L Golovin 6-4 6-4
L Kostanic 7-6 1-0
L Schnyder 6-3 6-1
L Sharapova 6-1 6-4
L Kleinova 6-4 1-6 6-4
L Dulko 6-1 6-4
L Molik 4-6 6-0 6-3
L Bovina 6-1 6-1

Serena:

L Petrova 6-2 6-3
L Sharapova 6-1 6-4

Venus:

L Raymond 6-4 7-6
L Kuznetsova 6-2 6-3
L Sprem 7-6 7-6
L Pierce 6-4 6-4

Capriati:

L Danilidou 6-4 7-6
L Danilidou 6-2 6-4
L Mandula 7-63 3-6 7-5
L Likhovtseva 6-2 7-5
L Dechy 6-4 7-5

So ranking for most upsets is:

1. Dementieva (11)
2. Myskina (8)
3. Kuznetsova (6)
4. Capriati (5)
5. Venus (4)
6. Mauresmo, Davenport, Henin (3)
7. Serena (2)

I did it for Kim and Sharapova too, although Kim hasnt played much this year and Sharapova has only been top 10 since Wimbledon so it wont be that accurate.

Kim

L Molik 3-6 7-66 2-3

Sharapova

L Zvonareva 4-6 6-4 6-4
L Washington 6-3 2-6 6-3
L Pierce 4-6 6-2 6-3

Experimentee - if you can be bothered, it would be worth dividing those loses by matches played, because Dementieva and Kuznetsova have played many more matches than, say, Kim, Justine, Serena.

Mmmmm Momo has lost 2 matches in OF at Paris & New york to Elena so Id say MoMo mentally is always ripe to be upset!:)

I think Mauresmo is the one most prone to an upset, despite the numbers. I think whenever she has played a match she is expected to win or should win, she not only does not win, but it seems her game just vanishes. While other may lose because their game is absent that day, she is the most glaring example of having a mental lockdown or psychological freeze that leads to her game breaking down. She gets too nervous too often.

I am surprised Amélie has so many votes, cause she is no. 1 without a slam, so I have been told. This would indicate that she is very consistent and does not lose very often to players ranked lower than her that often outside of slams.

Not Mauresmo, she just loses as soon as she plays anyone decent.

I would say Lena D, she has bad loses, but then again thats expected with such a weak serve

So you do not think Jen is a decent player, Momo beats her quite regulary.

At the moment, no, too many players are better than her, but i would say Jennifer at her best is better than momo.

While Justine was dominationg, and before that in 2003 she lost in QF only once, others were SF & finals!

Or was Jen having a bad year then ??

Stop complaining : every one except Dementieva, Kusnetsova, and Myskina should have 0 vote, because the question is who is the most prone to an upset. :p
But I agree with the fact that Serena is the least prone to an upset. :)

MrSerenaWilliams

Serena is the most consistent player on tour (check the bottom of my signature). And actually, the other players that have upset the other players have NEVER been in the top 10, while the two 'upset' losses Serena suffered were to players currently ranked in top 10 or in top 10.

Serena's 2004 Losses:

1. Petrova in Amelia Island
2. Capriati in Rome
3. Capriati in Paris
4. Maria in London
5. Lindsay in Los Angeles
6. Capriati in New York

All of these players (except for Petrova, who is yet to win a WTA title, come on Nadia, learn of Maria and play a Tier IV, where you're almost guaranteed the title) are currently GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONS! That to me does not count as an upset. In fact the last 'upset' loss you could say Serena had was to Rubin in July of '02 after dominating the clay season and winning Wimbledon, and right before winning the US Open. So, I think Serena is DEFINATELY the least prone to an upset. Justine is close behind. In fact, if she had had Serena's personal health concerns I doubt that she would have had any upset losses either. But DEFINATELY Serena is the least prone and shouldn't even have been included. I picked Myskina for the most prone, because if I'm not mistaken, all of Dementieva's losses have been to players ranked inside the top 50! Checkvadtske (or however you spell it) wasn't even ranked 150 when she beat Myskina. That was the most shocking upset I've ever seen. So she is definately most prone in my opinion. Also, because Dementieva has the goods to beat, or at least challenge top players, while Myskina....I dunno. Myskina in my mind is most secceptable to an upset.

Lemonskin.

A well thought out post!

Myskina ceratinly is extremely prone to an upset at the moment.
