I officially annoint this thread the bestest thread in this forum about the Japan Open ^_^

I suppose Frazier will be the biggest threat here. She's very handy on hardcourts and already has 2 Japan Open titles to her name.

Andy.
Sep 30th, 2004, 03:05 AM
Maria will have a tougher week than Korea thats for sure but i believe she is in with a great chance to defend her title. She pretty much has the edge on all of the players in the field and will have her challengers from Frasier and Golovin

Lemonskin.
Sep 30th, 2004, 03:18 AM
I'd be more inclined to think of Frazier as a threat than anyone else.

- She took Masha to two close sets at Wimbledon where she was on fire
- She is notoriously handy on hardcourts (Won Hobart I think it was this year)
- Masha's not in the form of her life.

Hopefully Masha picks up some confidence in Korea to take it to Amy!!!

I think Golovin would be as big a threat...she took Masha to 3 sets at Birmingham.. :D

Andy.
Sep 30th, 2004, 03:31 AM
Golovin is imporving and played well against Serena at the US but those 2 players at this stage seem to be the challengers, we will see how the draw looks like and If Maria has a good week this week because im sure It could be a tough week of tennis. But Imconfident Maria can win.

Sep 30th, 2004, 03:36 AM
TatiG took the first set off Masha and I'm confident that was just her old "slow start" trick she was pulling ;)

frazier might be a threat but masha beat her twice on hard court way before she won wimbledon

Luckily some more competition here than in Korea...

Edward.
Oct 2nd, 2004, 11:27 PM
If Maria plays as she did against Kremer, playing with confidence and hitting loads of winners, she can win this tournament. Consistency is the key.

Golovin and Frazier are the biggest threats.

Lemonskin.
Oct 3rd, 2004, 01:44 AM
All three girls have been in pretty similar form on the hardcourts this season, I think they all went out in the 3rd round of US Open too!

Andy.
Oct 3rd, 2004, 02:51 AM
Yes they did all go out in the third round of the US. Maria should be full of confidence now though dhe is playing really well.

Maria Croft
Oct 3rd, 2004, 11:05 AM
Yes, she can win this easily, there is more competition here but that shouldn't be a problem !!

No real threats for Maria! The rest of the players are about the similar standard.

Richie H
Oct 3rd, 2004, 12:19 PM
Maria has a bye in the 1st round! She will play either a Japanese player ranked 138th or a qualifier in 2nd round!

Frank
Oct 3rd, 2004, 01:09 PM
Please no talks about Maria winning this easily...

I think Frazier is a bigger threat than Golovin by the way.

Dan23
Oct 3rd, 2004, 03:05 PM
Main Draw is out :D

[1] Maria Sharapova (RUS) - bye
Aiko Nakamura (JPN) vs Qualifier
Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) vs Akiko Morigami (JPN)
Qualifier vs [5] Meghann Shaughnessy (USA)

[3] Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) vs Tamarine Tanasgarn (THA)
Barbora Strycova (CZE) vs Jill Craybas (USA)
Qualifier vs Aniko Kapros (HUN)
[8] Arantxa Parra Santonja (ESP) vs Qualifier

[6] Nicole Pratt (AUS) vs Eugenia Linetskaya (RUS)
[WC] Rika Fujiwara (JPN) vs Saori Obata (JPN)
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (ESP) vs Mashona Washington (USA)
Sandra Kleinova (CZE) vs [4] Kristina Brandi (PUR)

[7] Klara Koukalova (CZE) vs Milagros Sequera (VEN)
Lubomira Kurhajcova (SVK) vs Alina Jidkova (RUS)
Yoon Jeong Cho (KOR) vs [WC] Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)
[2] Tatiana Golovin (FRA) - bye

The 1st round bye probably gives Maria until at least Wednesday before her first match.
Likely QF opponent is the 5th Seed Shaughnessy, followed most likely by Asagoe in the SF if all goes well :D
Golovin would look most likely in the final with the absence of Frazier..
GO MASHA :clap2: :hatoff:

Dan, you forgot Nicole Vaidisova..
she is extremely talented..
I watched almost all of her matches in Vancouver which she won.

I would say Nicole will give Golovin a good run... an upset is quite possible

This is going to be an exciting tournament. Maria looks likely to make the final Asagoe seems to be the only real threat for now. Vaidisova and Golovin look like the other likely finalists. But Maria should be confident, it will be tougher than last week but she is in a great position to win another tournament. Good Luck Masha

I don't get something, why did Maria drop 2 places in the WTA ranking, Serena and Jennifer have caught up to her but that is impossible because they didn't play last week and Maria won a tournament, I'm really confused so can someone please tell me why she went from 8 to 10 !!!

Its got to do with the top 17 tournaments used to calculate the ranking changing as their 52 week validity expires and therefore the amount of points in the total changes too...:)
Maria will go back to 9 next week I believe as Clijsters falls to 10.

An article from Tokyo today, with some comments from Masha:
Sharapova in first title defence
05/10/2004 10:30 - (SA) - News24.com

Tokyo - Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova enters uncharted territory at the Japan Open this week when she will start as defending champion of a tennis tournament for the first time.

The 17-year-old Russian starlet - who stunned the tennis world with her maiden Grand Slam victory at the All England Club in July - returns to the scene of her first WTA tournament triumph this week.

And Sharapova said she was relishing the prospect of defending her crown.

"It's the first time that I'm the defending champion of a tournament since last year was my first tournament that I won. It's a great feeling," said Sharapova, who admitted her successful season caught her by surprise.

"All what had happened during last year, a lot of things I achieved at a young age, which were very unexpected, but it's an amazing feeling. I'm very excited to be back and defend my title."

Sharapova has since enjoyed victories at Quebec City and Birmingham and trounced former world number one Serena Wiliams of the United States in the Wimbledon final.

On Sunday, Sharapova, losing semi-finalist to Russia's US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in Beijing two weeks ago, defeated Marta Domachowska of Poland 6-1 6-1 to win the Korea Open for her fifth career singles title.

'Many great memories'

Sharapova dismissed suggestions that she might have skipped the $170 000 tier three tournament after her rapid rise through the women's rankings.

"As you win a title, of course, there are many great memories of winning, you just always want to come back to that place. I've always loved Japan and I've always loved Tokyo," said Sharapova.

"I've been in Japan a few times now, actually maybe the fourth time in Tokyo, so I just love coming back, I love playing in front of Japanese fans.

"It's an amazing vibe you get and sometimes that keeps you going, that keeps you wanting to win and play well.

"Just because I won Wimbledon, it doesn't mean that I'm always going to win every single tournament. I'm 17 years old. There are so many things I have to learn, I have to beat top 10 players (to win a big tournament).

"I didn't really expect to win Wimbledon so early, but I'm very happy that I did. It was an amazing experience.

"Definitely I want to be number one and I want to win many more Grand Slams and I'd love to win Wimbledon many more times," added Sharapova when she was asked about her main goals.

At the moment it looks as though this tournament may be The Maria,Tatiana show, they are the class in this field now. Nicole will be tough but her relative inexperience may be her undoing but this is an exciting youngsters tournament.

I have only one gripe about the article below. The use of the word "starlet" . What in God's name was the writer thinking when he/she used that word? Realistically, Sharapova is the "star" of the WTA tour now. Although admittedly there are a lot of other great players on the tour, Maria is the star. Or at least, one of the stars. Starlet my foot.

Excerpts from the article:

I think it's actually good for her that she was "checked" by Stosur, just to keep things in perspective. And with the upsets of other players, I'm sure she'll do well goin' in the next round.

Just focus. Never heard of Fedossova; but these types of players
can be trouble. The more obscure the harder to figure out how
they'll react to each game.

A business like performance w/out much mental effort should
employed today. No need to take wild risky shots or give
too much away in terms of emotions.

I too noted the duplicate posts, starting yesterday with Stosur. We're all monitoring the same scoreboard, I think, and posting at the same time.

Maybe no big tournament for the rest of the year? Maybe no more time left for one, given her limited tournament schedule. What tier is Zurich anyway?

OK, no disrespect to Mashona, really, it's quite surprising she's coming to form very late in her career, and of course, she's beaten Masha recently. Masha dominated her in 2002, but of course, that was old history.
