AGASSI'S SISTER COOKIN' AGAINST CANCER

By MARC BERMAN

September 5, 2004 --

At age 30, Tami Agassi was diagnosed with breast cancer. Andre Agassi's sister won the battle and five years later has dedicated her life to helping the cause.

Tami, now 35 and one year older than Andre, was at the U.S. Open Friday, promoting a new celebrity cookbook, "Star Palate," the proceeds of which benefit the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer/Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Tami, who played at Texas A&M and was better than her brother until he turned 10, got 72 celebrities/athletes to submit recipes, including five tennis players — if you still consider Anna Kournikova a tennis player.

Kournikova spices up the coffee-table book, posing seductively in pink shorts and shiny pink velour top. Her outfit was color coordinated to go with her recipe — pink Ukrainian Borscht.

"Star Palate" will be released in October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but early copies can be gained at Amazon.com, which is donating some profits to breast/ovarian cancer.

Tami, who lives in Seattle and is executive director of the Rivkin Center, underwent nine months of intense chemotherapy in 1999, then two years of hormonal therapy.

Days before the '99 Open and two months after winning his first French Open, the only Grand Slam that eluded him, Agassi made public that Tami and his mother were diagnosed with breast cancer. Agassi lost in the second round, then quit the tour for two months to support them. Tami holds a breast-cancer charity tennis tournament each year that Agassi plays in and bring others players.

"My biggest advice I can give is early detection saves lives," Tami told The Post at the Open's media dining room. "I think they say [wait until] 40 before taking a mammogram but if I listened to that, I wouldn't have detected it."

Tami is close with Agassi's wife, Steffi Graf. "She's arguably one of the best relatives we have, but my fiance will rival her," said Tami, who recently got engaged to a man she met from Tibet named Lobsang.

Among the cookbook entries include Britney Spears (seafood pasta); Liz Hurley (shepherd pie); Bill Gates (clam chowder); Pierce Brosnan (penne al funghi); Jay Leno (chicken wings marinara); Venus Williams (chili over Fritos); Mayor Bloomberg (baked beans) and Ray Romano (raspberry cream-cheese brownies). The Agassi/Graf entry was herb roast turkey.
