Bovina Bustles Past Camerin in Women's Second Round
by Ranon Masliyah
Thursday, September 2, 2004

Elena Bovina brought the fine game. Maria Elena Camerin needed to fine-tune hers.

The 26th-seeded Russian used a powerful backhand and smooth volleys to dispose of Camerin, 6-2, 7-5, Thursday in second-round action at the US Open.

Bovina, one of the WTA Tour's taller players at 6'2", will now face No. 5 Lindsay Davenport, who beat Spaniard Aranxta Parra Santonja earlier.

Bovina, who maximized her fortuitous backhand skills to blast shots to the deepest corners of Court 9, also utilized her accuracy to set up numerous net approaches against Camerin. The Italian qualifier did not pose much of a challenge to Bovina until the second set, when she cut down on her errors.

Camerin, 22, held a 5-3 lead in the second, but dropped the next four games to lose the match. Bovina broke serve in the 10th game and Camerin fell back to her mistake-filled ways. The 19-year-old from Moscow was quick to capitalize, winning a number of pretty points at the net with textbook volleys. The frustration boiled for Camerin, who yelled at herself throughout the match and flipped her racket to the ground at one point.

A quarterfinalist here in 2002, Bovina extended her winning streak to seven matches. She captured the Pilot Pen Tennis event last week for her first title since 2002.

It was very good from Elena, after all she did what she was supposed to, even though she might have been tired from the tournament win the week before!

She was the toughest opponent for Davenport on the tournament other than Kuznetsova... if she had a better draw she could go further! :)

Go Elena!
