Great, Nastya seeded four so can make SF. I think Sharapova also can go far (untill she gets to play Nastya). I think Sveta and Vera can also do 4 round at least, QF would be great. About Lena D's form nobody can be sure, but she likes hard.
Udachi all!

Thanks goldenlox! :)

This can really become an interesting tournament...There isn't really one favourite...
How will Justine do? How will the WS do after their injuries? Can Davenport reach her good form from this season again after her injury? Will Mauresmo finally be able to deal with the pressure? Can Myskina finally beat "the Americans"? How much will Elena be hindered by her serve? Can Maria Sharapova get herself together and stun her critics?

I'm really looking forward to it! :D

Haha! I really choked in my water this morning...I was watching teletext and it said "Russinas ready for US Open"...But in Dutch there's almost no difference between "to be ready for" and "to be done with"...So for a moment I thought all the Russians were removed from the draw or something...But when I read the article it was about Elena Bovina and Elena Likhovtseva winning New Haven and Forest Hills...:retard:

Anyway...Good luck to all the Russians at the US Open! (and especially to Maria S. of course...:p )

We should get 3 Russians into the QF's.

Sveta/Masha, Nastya/Lena B and Vera/Lena D.

I guess it's a good thing that they're grouped in the same sections.

I also would not write off Lena B in the Lindsay/Venus section. Lena has all the belief in the world now. With the shots she possesses, you never know. Give her a few months without injuries, and she's breaking out.

so far this has been a great tournament for the russians, at least for the russians ive been following. linetskaya and anna c both qualifying for their first slam and winning their first slam match. those 2 players have done better than i expected them to do here. the others we just have to wait and see. safina it would have been nice for her to get past dementieva, would have been a breakthrough win but she's been injured and out of form and lacking confidence so the set she took was great, it was a tough draw and an understandable loss, on the plus side it was good for lena d to get through as it was sharapova, kirilenko, vera d, kuznetsova, zvonareva, bovina, petrova. kuznetsova surprised me with such an easy win over a very talented and dangerous up and comer. vera z has started off well as has petrova and bovina. kirilenko had a very good win considering lena l's form and she needed the win and vera d had a nice win over kapros. for me personally the only russian not to have had a good tournament (so far) is safina but her draw was tough and if she had gone through another of my favs would have gone out anyway. so yeah, so far a great tournament. well done girls!

Good first round by the Russian players apart from T. Panova. Safina/Likhovtseva could have had a better draw. As best performer would pick Anna Chakvetadze/E. Linetskaya. Great job done by Kirilenko too.

the russians are still going strong! kirilenko and myskina out, bit disappointed about kirilenko's loss but i expected it to be a tough match and she has the shoulder injury as well, good thing is she wont be playing on that shoulder and making it worse. myskina, yeah would have been nice to get to the next round but anna has had a breakthrough tournament so im just as happy than if myskina won maybe even more happy due to it being a breakthrough tournament for anna. petrova, bovina, sharapova and kuznetsova all going through as well, all with good wins except for sharapova but a win is a win.

pretty good day, douchevina was the only one that lost and she played a pretty great match against capriati, taking a sert off a top 10 player is a bit of a breakthrough and she got to the 3rd round of a slam for the first time which is also a breakthrough. the russians are still doing pretty well this tournament.

Russian Women Sparkle at US Open
by Glenn Minnis
Friday, September 3, 2004

To be young, gifted and a female Russian tennis player.

Indeed, the field of women from Russia entered in the US Open is impressive. Consider that of the 15 originally on hand for this week's US Open, eight have played their way into the third round, with two of them advancing to the round of 16 today. Equally compelling is the fact that the average age of those still afloat is just 19.

In addition, 15 Russian players began the week ranked in the world's top 100, five of whom are ranked as high as the top 10. By contrast, eight Americans have also reached the field of 32, with two in the top 10 and Serena and Venus William hovering nearby at 11th and 12th in the world.

Thus, clearly the popularity of the game, not to mention their mastery of it, is on an upswing in Russia. And, believe it or not, it's not all about Maria Sharapova, this year's 17-year-old Wimbledon champion who arguably now finds herself as the game's hottest player.

Seeded No. 7, she'll be on hand in Flushing this weekend, as will No. 6 seed Elena Dementieva, No. 9 Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 10 Vera Zvonareva, No. 14 Nadia Petrova, No. 26 Elena Bovina and unseeded Anna Chakvetadze, who stunned reigning French Open champion and fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina, the tournament's fourth seed, in their second-round match.

Seventeen-year-old Vera Douchevina, also unseeded, also nearly moved on to the round of 16 Thursday but fell to American Jennifer Capriati in three sets, 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

"This is a trend that's not likely to fade away soon," predicts Jim Fuhse, Director of Special Projects for the WTA, who traces the start of the whole phenomenon back nearly two decades. "That's around when the Berlin Wall fell. That gave parents more of an influence over whom their little girls became and how they spent their time. Right away, they saw tennis as not only a wonderful career option but as a form of economical escape."

And now everyone else seems left to pay the price. Potential matches on tap as early as the fourth round include defending champion Justine Henin Hardenne vs. Petrova and Venus Williams vs. Bovina. Kuznetsova and Sharapova are also on course to meet in the round of 16, and, after their third-round wins Thursday, Dementieva is scheduled to meet countrywoman Zvonareva in the fourth round, as well.

"The winners in all this are the fans," says Fuhse. "Russia is not alone in producing some great young talent. It's happening everywhere. The fact of the matter is our game has become cool to youngsters once again, and we're all reaping the rewards of that. It makes for a great time."

tough day for the russians today, sharapova, bovina and anna all losing. sveta and nadia winning. i am disappointed with sharapova losing but i have to admit that i expected it from seeing her first couple of matches. bovina i was disappointed she didnt win also, i thought she would at least take a set of davenport, if she didnt win i always expected her to take at least a set and hearing lindsay wasnt playing as well as a few weeks ago i thought bovina could really win it. the first set isnt so bad, would have been good if she could have made the 2nd a bit tighter though. anna, i was disappointed at the loss to daniilidou, daniilidou has been is a slump for a long time and anna has had an amazing week i thought she would beat daniilidou, but still a great week from her.

well done to sveta and nadia, although sveta's match was closer than i expected it to be. nadia, i know she can beat farina elia in straight sets but im just happy that she has reached the 4th round of a slam after have some very rough tournaments as of late.

one thing is definate though, we will have a russian in the QFs thanks to vera z and elena d facing each other in the 4th round, so the russian streak of QFs or better in slams continues.

The winner of this match will be the leading money earner in women's tennis for 2004. Both Lena and Sveta are in the top 10. Tonight's winner gets a million. The finalist a half million.

Sveta beat an injured Lena in two sets.
In 2004, 3 different Russians won majors, and Lena D. twice made the finals.
Truly amazing.
Now everyone has to keep improving, and take all the big events in this sport.
