Good luck to the girls! :D

I hope that Mi-ra gets MD wildcard and So-Jung Kim, Ye-Ra Lee and Eun-Jeong Lee get Qualy wildcards. The sponsor of this tourney has four their own players including Jin-Hee Kim, Kyung-Mi Chang, So-Jung Kim and Ye-Ra Lee. I would hate to see they just give away the wild cards to JH Kim or Chang in the order of age rather than the players above.

I'm dreaming Maria Sharapova vs Mi-Ra Jeon final. :hearts: Hopefully, it will come true.

Why is Maria playing here she is a top player now a grand slam champion she should be a Mosco not in a tier 4

Eric_tennis
Aug 24th, 2004, 02:29 PM
There are some reasons for Maria S. playing here. :D

She's born in Siberia where close to Korea relatively and she said she likes Korean culture and food and wanted to visit Korea someday. I heard that people in Siberia are very fond of Korean food, especially 'Choco Pie' and 'Spicy Ramyun (kind of fried noodle)'.
And the sponsor of the tourney invited Maria long before her victory in Wimbledon and she was very positive then. And the sponsor is rich enough for good appearance $. ;)
And Korean sports market is one of the biggest in the world, so her management would love to expose her in that market.
The last but not least, there are soooo many fans of her. Almost every Koreans now know her, especially guys. :o When she won the Wimbledon, she was on every headline of the Korean newspapers which had been focused on golf, soccer and baseball.

For your information, the tournament week is in the biggest holidays in Korea this year. It's a kind of 'Thanks giving day' in Western countries based on the Korean Lunar calendar. The 20 million people's metropolis would be almost vacant in that week for people to go their hometown. So, no traffic inside Seoul, but you can't go anywhere outside Seoul via car, ship or airplane.
Korea had been the 2nd largest automobile market in Asia until 2002 over China,India and Australlia with their small land area. So you can imagine how crowded with cars in every highway outside Seoul.

But only for the tournaments, it's the best time. Every hotel room in Seoul would be vacant so there should be big discount, and you could select the seat in the Olympic tennis stadium as you wish.
Good luck.

Because she was offered a significant some of money to play here so she has decided to, instead of playing in the top tourneys to help her ranking, play where she is offered the most money. That tells you something about her character. :o  :(

She plays for money, fame and endorsement deals... :cuckoo:

Is Yoon-Jeong Cho playing for sure? I thought more Korean probably know her more than they know Jeon. It's been a long time since she injured, so close from winning a title too:(. Anyways, I hope Cho and Jeo get to meet in the final:).

Yes, YJ Cho will play here otherwise she wouldn't use her precious special ranking here. ;) She's fully recovered from the injury physically before the Olympic games.
No, she's not more famous than Mi-ra Jeon. Jeon was regarded big one when she reached junior Wimbledon and she has been most popular among female tennis players in Korea with her look & characters. :)

Cool:). I didnt know what:D. I cant remember where, but some time ago in challengers, someone posted saying that they always thought Jeon to be more talented than Cho, now I know why, lol:D. I thought with her US Open run and a top 50 ranking, she was more known....neways, good to know. Good luck to both  .

Why do people in Korean tennis feel that Mi-Ra hasn't fufilled her potential? What has stopped her from being a top 100 player?

Eric_tennis

Why do people in Korean tennis feel that Mi-Ra hasn't fufilled her potential? What has stopped her from being a top 100 player?
Cause she had best junior results ever, (mentioning again) reaching junior Wimbledon singles final losing to Martina Hingis. She was very excellent by then and also had good frame. (taller than most other girls, and powerful forehand at that time.)
Her misery started when she signed a wrong contract. A team had a exclusive right over Mi-ra since after her success in Wimbledon then Mi-ra couldn't improve with the regime. The team has only one male coach and Mi-ra herself. She didn't have any hitting partner and the training regime was not something new and creative. It was too hard for a highschool girl while other girls are training and playing with many team-mates. After several years the team abandoned Mi-ra, then she tried to play tournaments with several free air tickets from her mileleage then gave up tennis career. Because that situation hurt her pride and was not acceptable with her selfesteem.
After over a year's retirement, current team's head coach persuaded her to comeback cause he knew Mi-ra had great talent to be developed.
It's a quite long story... if you read Mi-ra's thread here, you'll know more.

Go, Mi-ra!
:D

No. 1 seed=no. 6 or 7 (depending on the Open) in the world.

No 2 seed=outside the top 50.

I just talked to WTA Tour and they will send me updated one.

Angie Widjaja had moved to Main draw a nd she withdrew Guangzhou open.
She entered into Maindraw with 125 ranking.

I have heard only good things over the past few years that I have been following her results. Such a beautiful tennis player. The entrance fee is about 12$, 17$(semi-finals, finals) 43$(entire tournaments entrance, except semi-finals and finals). It's only for center court. You don't need to pay money entering small court.

Here's the schedule and entrance fee. But It's only in korean.

Kirilenko and Sharapova team, is it happening again?
They do look together, but I wonder if Maria S wants to parter with Maria K now that she is a slam winner. But then, it does cost more for the organizer to get her to play doubles.
Hopefully it will happen though:).

We are not sure about the definition of "their own players." For So-Jung Kim and Ye-Ra Lee, due to their status as a "high school student," they could not belong to a certain company like Hansol. Afraid that "their own players" could be a wrong wording.
