Women's Round-up, Day Four: Venus Falls to Earth http://www.itftennis.com/olympics/news/newsarticle.asp?id=12435

Since tennis returned to the Olympic Games as a full medal sport in 1988, the women's singles gold medal has never been won by the same player at back-to-back Olympiads. The record is going to continue through the Athens Games because Venus Williams, who captured the gold medal in Sydney four years ago, was upset by France's Mary Pierce.

Athens 2004 will also be the first Olympics since 1988 to see the women's gold go outside the USA, as all thre of America's singles players lost today.

Pierce took the attack to Williams and made it clear that she was not in any way intimidated by the defending champion. Pierce, after all, has a mountain of experience behind her, has been ranked in the world's top ten and has two Grand Slam titles to her credit. The Frenchwoman upset the sixth seed 64 64.

"I'm playing really well - I felt for a little bit the last couple of months that physically I've started to feel really good and that my game has been starting to come together," said Pierce. "So it's just very pleasing to finally have it all kind of come together at tournaments and matches and in competition. I felt I returned Venus' serve really well, which is very key."

Venus had chances in the match. Even after losing the first set she was still attacking and broke Pierce in the second set to lead 4-2, but the Frenchwoman broke back and levelled the set at 4-4, then forged ahead for victory.

"Obviously I would have liked to have done better and even win the event, but, you know, now I just have to learn from my mistakes," said Venus after the third round result. "I think she played well and served well and played some good points at the right time."

Certainly the women's match that created the most atmosphere was the one that involved Greek player Eleni Daniilidou. It was wonderful as the local fans tried everything possible to get her over the line. Unfortunately it was not to be as Anastasia Myskina advanced 75 64 in one hour 55 when Daniilidou sent a backhand wide on match point. Myskina plays Francesca Schiavone who beat Fabioala Zuluaga 67 61 63.

Top seed and world number one Justin Henin-Hardenne took no prisoners in her third round match with Australian Nicole Pratt. The Belgian, who Pratt described as "a steam train named Justine" charged through 61 60. The way Henin-Hardenne was hitting the ball, one could be forgiven for thinking that she had not been away for the tour for ten weeks with a virus. It was an awesome performance.

Henin-Hardenne now plays Pierce for a place in the semifinals.

Second seed Amelie Mauresmo also proved to be too strong in her match with 16th seed Chanda Rubin, beating the American 63 61.

"I was able to break her very soon in the first set and that made it a little easier for me," said Mauresmo. "I was feeling very comfortable on the court again. Just the way I played in my first two matches, taking control and I really was focusing on the big pints. It went well."

Mauresmo later withdrew from the doubles because she had developed a skin allergy and did not want to risk her chances in the singles which she will play Thursday evening.

"I had some eruptions of rash or hives," explained Mauresmo on the skin problem. "I had them a couple of days ago in warm-up before my doubles match. Today in that second set, I couldn't really focus on what I had to do. Hopefully it will be fine."

With Mauresmo withdrawing from the doubles with Pierce, that allowed Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond to get a walkover into the quarterfinals.

Mauresmo takes on fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who beat Patty Schnyder 63 63 in the quarterfinals .

Australian Alicia Molik marched into the quarterfinals when she beat American Lisa Raymond 64 64. It was their first meeting and Molik, who won the tournament in Stockholm the weekend before the Olympics, says it was the best she had served in 18 months.

"Yeah, God, it was a great day," said Molik. "Don't have much to complain about in today's match. It was always going to be tough. Lisa's a great player, she can do so much at any time, so I think I played her perfectly today."

Molik plays Ai Sugiyama, the Japanese player moved past Karolina Sprem 76 61.

The women's quarterfinal line up has six different nations represented.

There was another upset in store in the remaining doubles action, with the top seeds Svetlana KUZNETSOVA/Elena LIKHOVTSEVA (RUS) losing to the French pairing of Nathalie DECHY/Sandrine TESTUD 26 76(5) 63. Asia is well represented in the women’s doubles quartefinals, with two Chinese pairs through, Zi YAN/Jie ZHENG and eighth seeds Ting LI/Tian Tian SUN, and one Japanese, the fifth seeds Shinobu ASAGOE/Ai SUGIYAMA.

Well what ever happens with JUJU I am really proud of our Mary. It was great to see from the pics today how much the result meant to her.

I knew Mary could do it. I am sure that now the result from RG 2004 is forgotten.

Best of luck Mary against JUJU I know that you can do it again.

Do it for your self first and then your fans and France !!!!!!!!

Mary really looks pumped at this tournament. The Olympics and representing France have really taken her to a new level. Mary just has to play relaxed and happy the way she played against Venus and i give her every chance against Justine. Good Luck Mary.

Hello Andrew,

I have to agree with you so much. If Mary is relaxed she has too much power for JUJU. And also I am sure the now JUJU is nervous to meet Mary as I am sure she expected to meet Venus next.

I just love it when Mary does this ypeeeeeeeee

I was just so nervous when i new Mary was playing.

Oh I have another two pics of Mary up on my site.
