Does anyone know who will carry the flag round for their country in Athens on Friday, and if any are tennis players? I remember Goran Ivanisevic did it for Croatia one year. It is a pretty big honour to be selected from the whole team to carry it, and it is usually someone who has achieved a lot, or is very famous.

Arantxa is playing her 5th Olympics, and has won more medals than any Spaniard in Olympic history, so I would think she is deserving of it, and could be asked, although I think she might be playing in Sopot next week.

Someone like Justine is a possibility. The Belgians on the board can correct me if I am wrong, but she is probably the most famous Belgian sportsperson right now, and definitely the most famous worldwide Belgian having been number 1 in the world so I could see her doing it. Roger Federer is someone else who might do it for Switzerland as he is their biggest star right now. Any other possibilties?

IF you're annoyed for the choice you should have read Emilio Sánchez Vicario's comments about it and Isabel's answer :devil::devil:

I wonder if the Russians put some full time Champions to carry their falg, or put might they put the branch that has a lot of new success: Tennis. I think that Myskina has a decent chance.

Alexander Popov will carry the flag for Russia. It's been announced long ago.
2nd choice was Svetlana Khorkina. No tennis players were considered.

Haha, i just posted this topic in the Olympics forum in the other section. I think Justine has a reasonable shot. I definitely think Myskina has a GREAT shot to be flagbearer, i think that her winning a major is one of the huge stories in russian sports of the year. she could really make a case for it esp. with sharapova not playing in Athens. I was thinking potential of paradorn for thailand? that is my other best guess

What about Martina Navratilova carrying the flag for the US? Or the Williams sisters? Either of those are at least a possibility.

Justine has a decent shot at carrying the flag for her country because heck, it's belgium and there is nobody else.. But I don't really think any other country will have a tennis player carry it, and especially not the US which has hundreds of top athletes all worthy of carrying it.

I doubt a tennis player is going to carry the USA flag because we have so many other athletes that are talented and well know.

I think it would be more appropriate for V&S to carry the flags because they are true Americans.
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Martina is an American citizen now. Martina wouldn't be allowed to represent the US if she weren't a "true American."

RE: Elena D
Home hero?
Big enough to be asked to escort Russia's flag-holder at the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony - not that she fully understood the honour. "When they asked me to 'follow the flag' I thought, we are all following the flag, right?"
