I think someone may have touched on it somewhere in a different post but I'm interested to know where you think Maria will be ranked at the end of the year. I believe #5 in the world is possible with very good results, but think that #6 is more likely.

Hay, if you're really brave, try and guess where she'll be ranked in the Porsche Race and overall Prize Money too!

And if you're mega-brave, try and guess what the top-10 will look like in the E.O.Y rankings. I guess the closest person won't win anything but bragging rights :p

I'll give it a shot!

END OF YEAR

1. Davenport
2. Mauresmo
3. Henin-Hardenne
4. Myskina
5. Dementieva
6. Sharapova
7. Capriati
8. Kuznetzova
9. S. Williams
10. Clijsters

Porsche Race: 1. Davenport 2. Myskina 3. Mauresmo 4. S. Williams 5. Sharapova 6. Henin-Hardenne 7. Dementieva 8. Kusnetzova 9. V. Williams 10. Capriati

Prize Money: 1. Davenport 2. Myskina 3. Sharapova 4. Henin-Hardenne 5. Mauresmo 6. S.Williams 7. Suarez 8. Dementieva 9. Kuznetzova 10. Capriati

I think top 3. Maybe no2. I mean she really deserves to be ranked very high. I just hope Amelie "can't win a slam" mauresmo doesn't get ranked so high though cos she doesn't deserve it.

There there! Mauresmo is very talented and has won a number of Tier I's- something Maria hasn't managed to do yet. I believe Mauresmo justifies her ranking.

I believe Maria will be ranked 6th.

yeah 6th was my guess and seems to be a popular chice it's very acheivable, with clijsters likely to be ranked lower due to injury, and capriati being very catchable.

I think Maria won't be ranked lower than #10 at the end of the year but it will be very difficult for her to qualify for the YEC because even though she performs exceptionally well on her 4 next tournaments, in the current race top 8 there are very strong players who will do their best to hold their qualification.

Realistically, only some other players' injuries could qualify Maria for L.A.

At the moment i would give Maria Sharapova Number 4
BUT, give Maria a year or two and you may well be looking at Number 1
I think myskina should not be highly ranked as she is
A) Evil to My Queen (Maria of course)
B) Plays like a lower seed player.

SF's of a Tier II should have given a few good points. Hopefully she'll win Korea (hope, but still not certain), at least make the final of Japan (quite a few good hardcourt players there, notably Amy Frazier), and do us proud at Zurich... that coupled with JCap not playin a whole lot might be enough to push her into the top 8 for YEC

Russia Rules
Sep 26th, 2004, 12:09 AM
Must win in Japan as she has all the points to defend in Japan. She should win in Seoul as there are no good players there. Zurich will be hard though, but she can do well there.

Not winning Japan won't make her drop in the Porsche Race rankings as you only accumulate points there, not drop any. She'd only drop in the WTA Rankings which in my view wouldn't be a disaster

The Rankings are getting tight Maria is going to have to play well to keep her top 8 position and stay in the hunt for the Season ending champs. but if she can win Korea and China she will have a good chance. im sure the worst she can finish this year in the rankings is about 10.

Ahahahaha.

Y.E.C (Year End Championships) is a tournament where the top 8 players of the year battle it out in a round-robin competition to see who is ultimately the best player of the year. The Porsche Race points (can see them at wtatour.com) are the indicators.

Currently Maria is in 8th in the race, but Justine has pulled out so she's effectively in 7th.

Hey Guys... SHE'S OFFICIALLY IN!!!

Sharapova Joins WTA Tour Championships Field

Reigning Wimbledon champion is third Grand Slam winner of 2004 to clinch spot in the coveted season-ending event; more big stars wrestling for remaining two spots; four team doubles field now set

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova will make her first appearance in the WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche, the Tour announced today.

Sharapova, coming off a final round performance at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich last week, clinched a spot in the prestigious season-ending tournament November 10-15 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The 17-year - old Russian tennis sensation adds even more star power to the Championships field, which includes Lindsay Davenport, Amélie Mauresmo, reigning US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, reigning French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and two-time Grand Slam finalist Elena Dementieva.

The final three spots in the Championships doubles field have been filled. Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs, Elena Likhovtseva and Kuznetsova, and Nadia Petrova and Meghann Shaughnessy clinched places in the four-team draw, joining current Porsche Race to the Championships leaders Paola Suarez and Virginia Ruano Pascual, who qualified earlier this month. Black and Stubbs, currently second in the Race standings with 3,122 points, have been particularly hot lately, winning doubles titles at the Swisscom Challenge last week and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Filderstadt two weeks earlier.

Sharapova, seventh in the latest Porsche Race to the Championships standings with 2,809 points, has been on a meteoric rise since this summer. She captured the world’s attention by winning Wimbledon and has been virtually unstoppable during the fall season, sweeping back -to-back titles (Hansol Korea Open and AIG Japan Open) and 12 straight matches before finally losing in the Swisscom Challenge final. She gives the Championships field three of the four Grand Slam singles winners from 2004.

More marquee names will likely join the Championships field during these final two weeks. Serena Williams (2,596 points), Venus Williams (2,332 points), Jennifer Capriati (2,300 points) and Vera Zvonareva (2,219 points), who are No. 8 through No. 11, respectively, in the Race standings, are battling for the remaining two singles positions (Justine Henin-Hardenne, sixth in the Race standings and out for the year with a continuing virus, is being replaced by the ninth -place finisher) . Serena and Zvonareva are competing at the Generali Ladies Linz in Linz, Austria this week, and all four are scheduled to compete the following week in the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia, setting up what could be one of the most dramatic Race finishes in recent years.

The top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams in the final Porsche Race to the Championships standings qualify for the prestigious Championships. The Championships singles winner will earn $1 million in prize money and a Porsche to donate to their favorite charity.

Wonderful news! By reaching the final at Zurich, Maria has secured one of the eight places in the WTA Tour Championships at Los Angeles, starting on Wednesday 10th November. :D

The eight players will be split into two groups of four for a round-robin section where each player plays three matches: against each of the other three players in her group.

The winners of the two groups will play the runners-up of the opposite groups in the semi-finals on Sunday 14th November, and the final will be on Monday 15th November.

Maria is the sixth player to qualify for the Championships, and with two weeks to go, four players are in contention for the last two places:

(CAPS = qualified)
1. LINDSAY DAVENPORT, 4546.00
2. AMÉLIE MAURESMO, 3640.00
3. ANASTASIA MYSKINA, 3595.00
4. SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA, 3558.00
5. ELENA DEMENTIEVA, 3386.00
6. justine henin-hardenne, 2884.00 (will not play)
7. MARIA SHARAPOVA, 2809.00
8. Serena Williams, 2596.00 (Linz and Philadelphia)
9. Venus Williams, 2332.00 (Philadelphia)
10. Jennifer Capriati, 2300.00 (Philadelphia)
11. Vera Zvonareva, 2219.00 (Linz and Philadelphia)

It would be cool if Vera and Jennifer could take the last two places, for Vera is currently my favourite player that I like without being a fan of, and Jennifer was the first girl I ever had a crush on. :o

:D although with 1 million and a Porsche at stake, they might find it hard to pull out. this is a Grand Slam level purse. with a car, too.

#4

Thats excellent. I may have to reconsider my view that there is no chance Maria could take #1 spot next year....

Andy.
Nov 15th, 2004, 07:36 AM
Wow that would be a huge achievement in only her second year on the tour to finish at number 4 but if she doesnt she has still done soo well. Congratulations on a great year.

Frank
Nov 15th, 2004, 10:21 AM
That would be a wonderful achievement.

As for the number 1 spot next year. She has heaps of points to defend at Wimbledon and Roland Garros of course. If she manages to defend these, and perform better at the both hardcourt slams, and then the US hardcourt season, who knows what might happen...
