As it stands right now, I don't think Serena will be in top 8 by the US Open.
It will be interesting to see how the draw is impacted - as she will meet a top seed earlier. Think she will even be more motivated b/c of it.

US Open seedings DON'T need to go by the rankings, just like the other GS's.

They can seed her, Venus, or whoever, whatever they please.

they typically follow the rankings, regardless of what they are allowed to do.....

Well she didn't play last year but won the year before... it should be interesting to see what she's seeded!

Didn't her ranking fall outside the top 8 in 2001 and they seeded her outside the top 8. Top-8'er Justine got the "pleasure" of being Serena's unlucky 4th-round opponent, and Lin-See was the unlucky qf-opponent. They won't special seed her, imo, but I bet at least one or both the Belgian babes pulls out, so she might end up in the Top 8.

It all depends on the drop outs, if the Belgians are out, keep an eye on the tournament directors whom will surely bump the Williamses.

They won't if JHH is playing

Sorry to say so, but tenn_ace is right. They should go by the rankings, unless Serena still has still has special seedings.

I hope they won't even if JHH is not playing.

Just some possible scenarios.
So far the top 5 players in the ranking will not be passed until the US Open.
And it is for sure that Kim will fall to #5 before US Open.
Assuming Sveta not passing Maria, she is out of top 8 seed.

So without Serena/Venus getting SS
#1-4: Justine, Lindsay, Amelie, Nastya in any order before US Open.
#5-6: Kim, Elena
#7-8: Jenifer, Maria
#9-12 Sveta + 3 of Venus/Serena/Paola/Ai

If Serena gets seeded, it'll create quite a big impact with any of the top 4 can drop off from the top 2 or top 4 seeds. Also Maria will be bumped out of top 8 seed. Even Venus can be bumped out of top 12 seeds.
#1-4: Serena + 3 of (Justine, Lindsay, Amelie, Nastya)
#5-6: Kim + the unpicked from above
#7-8: Elena, Jennifer
#9-12 Maria + Sveta + 2 of Venus/Paola/Ai

If Venus is seeded as well, both Jennifer and Maria will be bumped out of top 8 and 2 of the top 4 will be bumped out of there. It could be anyone.
#1-4: Serena + Venus + 2 of (Justine, Lindsay, Amelie, Nastya)
#5-6: 2 unpicked from above
#7-8: Kim, Elena
#9-12 Jennifer + Maria + Sveta + Paola or Ai

Kim is unlikely to be seeded specially, what kind of ranking should she be seeded anyways, not to mention she has never won US Open. There really no point, but if she is to be seeded, I assume Venus will be seeded as well.
So if Kim is seeded as top 4.
1-4: Kim + Venus + Serena + (one of Amelie/Nastya/Justine/Lindsay)
5-8: Elena + 3 not picked above
9-12: Sveta+Maria+Jen+ (one of Ai/Paola)
But it's quite unlikely.

I'm not a rankings specialist by any means... so that I'm clear are we saying that with the tournaments Serena and Vee have lined up it's not probable for their rankings to rise to fall within the top 8 by the time the US Open starts? Isn't Vee number 10 right now and don't most of the other girls ranked directly above them have points to defend whereas Vee and Rena are only adding on the points?

....again rankings and points are not my "thing" so I'm sincerly wanting to know. I was thinking that they could really jump up in the standings, maybe I'm wrong....in either case after the Open both of em should have a really nice big jump.

Serena and Venus can actually reach top 8 before the seeding is set which is the ranking coming out of Athens. However, I'm just assuming the worst scenarios for Venus and Serena. These are just possible scenarios.
And you are right, they can jump up there, but in that case, it'll be even more complicated with the scenarios for the special seedings. We'll see later.

I'm guessing that she'll get to the top-8. And I woud accept her ebing seeded 1-2 places above her ranking. But that's it.
