seeing as the main topic on the board at the moment is the sprem-venus incident, i was just wondering what kind of gamesmanship problems everyone has had in tournaments

i have been known for a bit of gamesmanship, bad calls, trashtalking etc :devil:
this is probably the worst thing ive done:
i was playing this guy in an australian national junior points tourney. he was a nice guy, but he was probably the biggest moonballer ive ever had to play. he won the first 6-1 and i was going crazy. i managed to win the second 6-2 by fighting fire with fire :p
we got to 6-6 in the third and 5-5 in the tiebreaker. we were having a huge moonball rally when i thought fuck this he doesnt deserve it im a better player so i called a ball out that was inside the baseline by about 6 inches :o
he questioned it and i said i saw the ball as out. he was ruffled and i won the next point and the match
when we shook hands he called me a fuckin hook and then it really sunk in what i had done. i felt awful about it and still do. especially bcos after the match i was selected for a state squad and he wasnt :sad: and the selection was probably depending on that match :o
i have learned from it though and havent done anything like that since :angel:

Well....one time I was playing a doubles match (the only one I lost last year :angel: ) and during a game when we were down 7-8 (proset, first to 8 by two) I aced the opponent with a forehand-ish serve and we would have been ahead 40-0 love in that game but he wouldn't accept the point, because he said it "wasn't fair" and I just let him have the point instead of arguing about it because some other people were trying to get onto the court and we were trying to get done fast, so I didn't have time to argue. Well I let them have the point, and they went on to win the game and therefore the match. Now I wish I hadn't! :p

aussie terms:
hook=cheat
hack=moonballer
tank=someone who just smacks the shit outta the ball
puddler=sort of like a hack, except instead of allout moonballs they just hit average midcourt balls all day

Well, I have cheated a couple of times, mostly by calling balls out that were in... but I feel so bad about it, that I usually end up giving it back to them by calling "in" for balls that were really out. I guess I have a guilty conscience. ;)

I never cheat. If I ever made a bad call, "I would be honest about it," and correct it. lol.

I was once accused of cheating when I hadn't. I was down 5-7 2-4 in the final of our annual club championships. My opponent (a total dick who deserved nothing but an ass whooping) was serving on his advantage. He hit what he thought was an ace, but I called it wide because I saw green space between the line and where the ball landed. This was played on grass and he heatedly argued that he saw a puff of chalk go up. I made it clear that it was my call and that there had been NO chalk and that it was clearly wide. He didn't believe me and called me a cheat. He then took a bathroom break and bad-mouthed me to anyone who would listen to him. I am a popular member there, so no one was really convinced by his accusation. Had he won the point, he would have been up 7-5 5-2 in the second set, but I got it back to 4-4 and then closed out the set 6-4.

The people sitting behind our court told me that they saw ball as indeed being clearly wide and that I had no reason to worry. They then admitted that my opponent had made at least four very bad line calls, calling out on balls that had landed on the line. I didn't see the shots as I usually turn away once a call has been made. My theory is that it is my opponent's call to make and that there's no point in arguing it once a call has been made. But my opponent was a hypocrite and a liar. After he came back, I whooped his ass good and red. At the net, he called me a cheat again and claimed he had stomach cramps. Maybe he shouldn't have smoked two cigarettes before the match. :rolleyes: The score in the end was 5-7 6-4 6-0. Up yours, dumbass!

Every time I lose my opponent cheated! :p
Although, seriously, I did once get cheated out of a match. It was 6-6, first set tiebreak and we kept winning our serve points in the breaker until 5-5. I served what clearly appeared to be an ace. Even he went to the other side for the next point. However, he stood there for a second, and said "Actually, I think I'll call it out because it was close"! No joke, he actually said those exact words! I was so pissed off so I lost 7-6 6-3! :(
Also, everytime my opponent moonballs, I call it unsportsmanlike and cheating! :p

Why you say j/k? This poster IS a jerk if he did that. :p

I once time had a K-lina moment. I was playing a guy who THOUGHT he was good and the coach told me to beat him at love to show him that he need a long way to go if he was going to even play on the HS team. So away we were playing and during one of the games we both completely lost track of the score and just had to start over that game cause I had no idea and neither did he. :tape: He did lose 6-0 6-0 :devil:

I used to play tennis every day with my friend.
This one time I hit the ball and she went through the hole in the net :p and then hit the court on his side "I got" the point and he said "wow I thought it's not coming above the net but somehow it did" and my answer was "so did I" :p :lol:

But he used to call in question my powerfull services which hit the line all the time so it sounds fair to me :p

And yes, I am a fan of Justine.

i can't remember cheating, and I'd like to think I don't. of course, i've undoubtedly made genuine mistakes in my calls.

In fact, one of the things I have done is overrule a doubles partner when they have tried to cheat on a call. I can't stand playing with a cheat because I feel so embarassed and want to win fairly.

i play for enjoyment, not just for winning. cheating at club level sours things, and it's hard to share tea and cakes afterwards in the clubhouse when there's been an 'incident'.

Me too, when I'm playing doubles I overrule my partner's calls more often than I have to make a call myself. Sometimes I even go one step further and call one of my own shots out even when both the opposition thought it was in!

But I do have my naughty side too. :devil: Sometimes when the other players are unsure about a call and want to play a let, I just keep quiet :tape: and pretend I didn't see the ball, even though I secretly know that the point was against us.

i can never do it...i remember things as little as playing netball when i was younger, and if a call was close and the ump asked if it came off me last, and it did, i would say "yes" straight away.

I high school...my junior year I played this girl from my rival school and we just didn't like eachother. The first time we played, she tried cheating by calling out the wrong score really really low. When I finally said something to her about it when she said she won the game...she started screaming at me. Usually I am really quiet and laid back, but I started screaming back. I turned to walk back to the baseline and she hit a ball at me, I almost charged the net. For the remainder of the match she called every close ball out, and started her cheating ways. I got revenge and won the match 6-2, 6-3 and sent her off the court crying.

I played her again in the semi-finals. I got caught up in the first set and lost 0-6...came back and won the second 6-4 (she went behind the curtain and screamed) then she beat me in a close 3rd set. Her cheating got so bad that parents were screaming out from the stands...and our coaches had to call the lines and she still did it! Thank god I never have to play her again, although I would love to get some revenge in college. Hehe.

once when caddying for golfers, i was caddying as i have on many occasions for professional hockey players. well one of the members, a non-hockey player hit the ball in the woods, and i moved the ball. caddies are not allowed to touch the ball and if one does he acutally is cheating on the players behalf and the player gets eliminated. it wasnt a tournie tough. so the player just called me out on it after 9 holes...............VEry embarassing.

I cheat when i play my girlfriend. She doesn't like to lose, and calling out all the time makes her mad. She never won! Most she did was taking 3 games once, and she used to train tennis too. I do that just to upset her. Sorry Kristina :)-You don't know her playing monopoly in company. But then again we do the same thing together when we play mixed with our friends, and again sorry Kosta/Ivana

sometimes I'll look the other way when a negotiable call is decided in my favor, but this one time in the spirit of "the hand". I put my hand up because I wasn't ready to return, and the casually hit the ball and was getting ready for the next point, but then the coach called it their point because she didnt see it. Then everyone said I put my hand up (unlike some professionals :tape: ) but she said it didn't matter because I can't hold up play :rolleyes: I was like wtf? Justine can do it why cant I? :angel:
