Thought I would make a thread for Christina's results as she is starting to actually find some form

WIMBLEDON 2004

Qual 1st rnd - Defeated (12) Virginie Pichet (FRA) 3-3 RET.
Qual 2nd rnd - Defeated Elise Tamaela (NED) 46 64 63
Qual 3rd rnd - VS Obziler or Flipkens

Go Christina QUALIFY!

Thanks for the thread.

Christina's been in this situation a couple of times - last year in the US Open losing 7-5 in the third.

Hopefully she gets through - either opponent will be tough.

Time for Christina to stand up and take this opportunity she created for herself.

QUALIFY CHRISTINA!!!:shout:

I remember the close 3 setter she lost to (Beygelzimer?) last year in New York in the final qualy round...and yes she also made the final round of qualies at the Aussie Open as a teenager way back in 2000! So she's been in this position before...

Obziler will play her all day, but Christina can certainly get through this. We'll find out tomorrow night.

Go Christina Go! :fiery:

Christina is 2nd on court tonight against Obziler. HUGE chance to qualify as Christina beat Obziler in the 1st qualy round here last year! the score was really close though 7-5 4-6 6-4, hopefully she wins and gets to play her first Grand Slam main draw without the aid of a wildcard!

Wheeler 1-5 Vs Peribaynus

TS
Jun 24th, 2004, 12:18 PM
She just broke to get back to 3-5...so she's fighting.

But in typical Wheeler fashion she has just been broken to love to lose the set 3-6 :( She is just too little to impose any sort of dominance on serve

She wont give up without a fight though, that's the the thing I like about Chrissy :)

TS
Jun 24th, 2004, 12:47 PM
It's over, 3-6 2-6

Not much of a surprise, but quite disappointing. Perebiynis is a very beatable player, but obviously a class above.

Christina could barely hold serve at all...that's always been a problem with her, as she doesn't have an imposing style of game. Still, it's very encouraging to see her qualify...:) This is what it's like in the big league's, now she's had a taste of it, so let's hope it fires her up for some more success down the track.

I was hoping that Christina would emulate her pal Nicole many years back when Nic qualified for Wimbledon, beat Studenikova (who the year previous had beaten Seles at Wimbledon) which pushed her up the ranks. It was not to be!

Pity she couldn't make more of an impact - Im hoping that qualifying is a sign of things to come not the height of her tennis achievements.

Perebiynis is beatable (hey she lost to the likes of Breadmore & Watson??) but I suspect that if Wheels had nothing on her game today, then Perebiynis would've dominated the baseline exchanges.

Christina.... she keeps playing 50 and 75 k's and they are just too strong for her right now. She is consistently qualifying for them but losing the first round easily. I think she really needs to go back to 25's and 10's untill she gets her confidence back. I mean lets face it, shes got no chance of making Wimbledon qualies with her current ranking which means shes gonna lose a whopping amount of points as she qualified last year..... She really needs to just start a fresh i think... go back to the 10k's

SeanyQ
May 10th, 2005, 07:21 AM
She'd lost a couple of close ones like 7-5,7-5. Last week at 6-2,6-3 was the only easy one. She hasn't been getting very good draws. Normally I'd be all for her playing the $10k's. Still might be a good idea. I think she's doing ok though. I'll eat my hat if she doesn't qualify & win at least a round this week!! :D

broncosven
May 10th, 2005, 07:35 AM
She has been doing really really well and qualifying into these events

so she probably has been getting more points by qualifying then losing first round then going deep into a 10K event, and lets not overlook matchplay aswell !!

petey_pan
May 10th, 2005, 11:07 AM
Yeh i guess so.... I was just more thinking it would be good to ... maybe win a few 10k's or 25 k's like Evie did.... that really got her back on track

SeanyQ
May 11th, 2005, 08:00 AM
If Christina qualifies but loses 1r this week & only wins 1 more point before Wimbledon & doesn't play Wimbledon qualies. Her ranking will drop to about 470-475 (42 points to defend there). She's only got 13 other points to defend for the rest of the year. I still think she'll finish the year top 300!

ozfan44
May 11th, 2005, 08:01 AM
she needs to try and get back into top 250

i reckon she can do it

shes up to about 310 at the moment!

"Granville withdrew from the tournament on Thursday after falling ill from the heat exposure she had during her three-set win in the first round on Wednesday. Granville, who hopes to play in the French Open, wanted to play but figured the risk was higher than the reward.

Christina Wheeler, an Australian native who trains in Florida, advanced to today's quarterfinal round when Granville withdrew.

"I actually feel bad for her," Wheeler said of Granville. "I was looking forward to the match."

Wheeler will square off today against Alex Glatch, a 15-year-old phenom, who upset seventh-seed Jennifer Kirkland (7-6, 6-1) in the second round. It marked the fifth win in as many days for Glatch, who made the main draw with three wins in the tournament's qualifier."

I think Christina needs to bite the bullet and come home for the latter half of the year and play those 6 Aussie challengers for the first time in years. This way she will easily increase her ranking and possibly even tough it out for a WC into the AO. I don't understand why she never plays them, she is more than capable of winning a couple of them.

ozfan44
Jul 28th, 2005, 02:35 PM
i wouldnt say capable of winning them but reaching quaters or semis of just about all of them is not out of the question!

TS
Jul 28th, 2005, 10:06 PM
Well she won one before...and that was about 4 or 5 years ago. If Welford, Hewitt and Dellacqua can win them, then Wheeler most certainly should be able to.

SeanyQ
Jul 28th, 2005, 10:43 PM
Exactly! There would be only a handful of players that would worry her in the AUS challengers. She could at least try to earn a wc into Aus Open by being the best Aussie performer. She's supposed to be an Aussie - would it kill her to play here like every single other Aussie player outside the top 100 do!?

Jul 29th, 2005, 04:17 AM
She's got a fancination with playing the much tougher US circuit - I know she's based herself there but it does her no favours.

Sure it might be tougher competition but it doesn't help her because she gets beaten early often. She'd be best to get the matches in Aus, get the ranking/wins up to a point she may get a Aus Open w/c (instead of waiting for a freebie) and then get in striking distance for a slam rnd win or even qualification for some WTA events. 2 years ago she was in a position to do this not so know.

Two years ago she played the last 3 or so 25K's. Entered one late, got a w/c and then faced Evie in the 1st rnd!!!

Christina's year so far:
Didn't show up for the Gold Coast. Sophie Ferguson was expecting to play doubles with her.

Hobart:
Didn't play doubles. Had points to defend from making the SF's of Canberra with Trudi Musgrave last year.
Received 2 consecutive w/o'to make the final round of qualies where she beat # 198 Kristina Barrois - 6-3,6-1. Lost 1r of the MD to # 101 Severine Bremond - 6-2,6-4.

Aus Open:
Q1-Nathalie Vierin d. Wheeler - 6-1,6-3.

Hopefully she can do OK in the doubles. She made the 2r there last year with Trudi.
She's entered:
$50k Waikoloa USA - 23 Jan - # 15 on qualies list;
$25k Rockford USA - 30 Jan - # 19 on qualies list;

So after a poor run in the Spanish $25k's (couldn't get past dubs QF or singles 2r)....off to the Grasscourts in Surbiton GBR.

Q1: 1/322-Wheeler d. nr-Jessica Jackson (GBR) - 6-1,6-1
QR: 1/322-Wheeler d. 12/677-Melissa Berry (GBR) - 6-3,6-1

MD 1r:

Head 2 head:

Oct 2003 - $50k - HardCourt:
Q/549-Poutchkova d. 168-Wheeler - 6-2,6-3.

Olga has played only 4 grasscourt events in her career. 2002, played the 4 Aussie grass $10k's (as well as hardcourt the week before in Bendigo where she lost to Sevvy Gallios in str8 sets). Lost QF's of 1st 2 grass tournies (to Casey Dellacqua & Lisa McShea both in str8 sets) & then 1r of her last 2.
These were the 1st tournies of her career. Hasn't played on grass since.
So this could be a chance for Christina to get a huge win (rankings wise anyway).....

At least she had a good excuse for an easy 1r loss this week. A couple of years ago, Christina may have been a chance in this match. She needs to start putting more work into improving her game & especially her declining fitness. I reckon it may even be an idea for her to play a few $10k's & learn how to win again! I suppose at least she scraped out a 6-4 set though...

While it's hard to expect Christina to do well against a player ranked 300 places above her. One interesting pattern I noticed with Bardina is this:
Lost to Harkelroad - 6-1,5-0 ret;
lost to Poutchkova - 6-3,5-2 ret;
lost to Vesnina - 6-2,5-2 ret.
These were the last 3 matches she's retired in....2 in 2006 & 1 in 2005.
Hopefully this is a sign that she may not be mentally there, in which case if Christina can get off to a good start...who knows??.....

3/71-Vasilisa Bardina d. 370-Wheeler - 7-5,7-5.

Christina started off on fire! Great intensity, u could tell she really wanted the match. She got off to a 5-1 lead & held a set point by being aggressive from the ground, serving surprisingly big & playing well from the net when she got the chance.
From set point till the end of the set, she appeared to get nervous. Her groundies started getting shorter & the errors crept in. Bardina on the other hand, started being the aggressor & cut out the errors. Total role reversal.
Bardina got up a break & led 4-2 in the 2nd set. Wheeler started playing well & towards the end of the match it looked like it may go to a 3rd set.
The 2nd set was definitely better quality. Bardina started the match looking a bit rusty, whereas Christina with recent playoff matches under her belt, looked to be already in a groove. So most of the best tennis from both players came in the 2nd set. U wouldn't have guessed there was 300 places difference in rankings!
This was the best I'd seen Wheeler play for a while, she looks fitter than last time I saw her & fortunately has ditched the black hair & gone back to blonde. She also got a code violation for racquet abuse towards the end of the 1st set. She just bounced the racquet on the court, there'd been no anger leading up to it, so it seemed a bit strange to get a code violation for it.
I can't see any reason she won't improve her ranking back into the top 250 or 300 if she can continue this form for the rest of the year.
I think Bardina will have an easier time of it in the next round.

Come on Christina. Keep the great form afloat. Get Paulline the French girl and reach the semis. How about an all Aussie semi final.Really good form for both Casey and Christina. How is the French wild card to be decided? Does anyone know? Will it just be given to Casey or will there be a play off? remember when Christina beat Anna K a few years back?

I think that there will probably be a playoff. Casey deserves it - look at her results this year compared to Adamczak/Ferguson/Musgrave/Breadmore etc. I think that the playoff is good preparation for the French - Alicia did great to reach the 3rd Rd after coming through the playoff.

My picks for a playoff would be;
Casey
Monique
Sophie
Christina

Going on current form, Christina should get the nod ahead of Breadmore/Musgrave etc

Definitely worthy of a place in the FO wc playoff's.
Pauline Parmentier is ranked # 157, but a good chance to get another huge win.

It could be. Honestly though, when I saw her lose to Bardina 5&5 on the Goldie in Jan. I got a real vibe that she was gonna do something this year. Maybe that match showed just how close she is to the top 100 ability wise.
I first saw Wheels play in like 1999 or 2000 or something too many drinking sessions ago :tape: She got smashed something like 1&0 to McShea, then the next week she got Ellwood to a 6-4 set. She was really young, but looked like she was in for big things in the future.
When she was rinked mid 100's for 3 years or whatever it was, I thought it was only a matter of time till she hit the top 50.
Who knows what happened. All I know is that between seeing her at Wimbledon 2004 to Nuri 2005, her fitness had gone totally AWOL. She's suffered numerous injuries, ankle injuries that I was aware of. Plus the shoulder injury (or something like that) that Ozfan's mentioned.
At Nuri I saw her lose to Rao something like 0-6,6-2,7-5. It was her fitness that stopped her winning the match.
She looks great again now. Maybe it's only a matter of time till she's back up there where she belongs.
One thing I strongly believe, is that she has loads more potential than most of our girls. I'd rate her a solid # 5 in Aus talent wise. Not meaning to take anything away from the others, some of which work harder than Wheelz. In Monique & Beti's case, too much so.
