The more Russians in the main draw, the better. As Vera Z, said - "we have so many Russians and we have somebody to talk in Russian and we always have a good company around."

galina lost to stevenson 8-10 in the 3rd set. galina was serving 2nd in the 3rd set and fought well, she was down a break early in the set 2-4 i think, then brought it back to 4-4.

Kirilenko's and Dementieva's losses have almost ruined Wimbledon for me. :( They are 2 of my 3 favorites and they both came up very small in the biggest and best tennis tournament in the world. Especially Elena who was totally unprepared to play Wimbledon. I can partially excuse Kirilenko's bad loss to Frazier on her being only 17 and very inexperienced. But I must say I've never seen a talented all court player like Kirilenko consitently get poor results. It;s very frustrating. Maybe she needs a new coach or a permanent move the Evert Tennis Academy in Florida. Little Masha is too good to play such bad tennis.

As for Kuznetsova, I am shocked at her first round loss. But one thing is certain. We now know who the second best Russina is.

Nastyafan
Jun 22nd, 2004, 11:23 PM
and who's that?!?! :scratch:I'm curious to know too. Masha? Two weeks ago it didn't look so. And if she wins against Nastya next week maybe she will become the first? The truth is that they all are too inconsistent and unpredictable and I think this is a question with many and always different answers:confused:

They are not inconsistent. Maria has won 10 of 11. Nastya has won 8 straight. No one wins every match.
Even Sveta is consistent. One match doesn't change that.

Nastyafan
Jun 22nd, 2004, 11:37 PM
I think to play GS final and in the next one to lose in the 1rd or to win tier2 and then to lose in the 1rd is exactly inconsistency

Dementieva is inconsistent. You look at Sveta's results, this almost never happens.
Sveta has been very consistent since Melbourne.

That will be a preview of the future of Russian tennis. Maybe Centre Court, huge worldwide interest.
And two excellent players who are both very confident.

:cuckoo: reading at eurosport.com LIVE :rolls:
(the time is CET, not BST)

18:59 The rain continues to fall, and it isn't getting any brighter!

18:34 The Wimbledon championship committee have decided to bring play forward by one hour on Friday and Saturday. Play will commence at 12:00cet on both days. No play has been possible on Wednesday. The covers remain...

17:59 Just as it looked as if the covers were to come off the courts for the first time today, the rain begins to fall down

17:30 The rain has stopped and the few souls on Henman Hill remain in good spirits, but plenty have left the grounds...

16:39 Weather reports indicate that their may be some brighter weather around 17:30cet, but scattered showers continue...

16:13 It's raining again! Umbrellas go up on Centre Court and Court One, for those spectators with no where to go

16:08 The rain showers have stopped, but now there is a gusting wind... fingers crossed play on day three can get underway within the next 45 minutes... covers remain are on all the courts

15:41 Brighter weather has been forecast for Thursday and Friday, but as almost three hours of play has been lost to rain, surely the Order of Play Committee, will be looking ahead to Sunday, to catch up

15:04 Cold air is now being blown under the covers of each of the grass-courts at Wimbledon, but the umbrellas remain up...

14:22 WIMBLEDON REFEREE ALAN MILLS: "There is quite a good hope of some play today and we're crossing our fingers and just hoping that at least we get all the unfinished matches of yesterday completed today."

14:22 WIMBLEDON REFEREEE ALAN MILLS: "We're not unduly concerned, officially, we're 45 matches behind and, if we were thinking of playing on Sunday, that would not be until Friday. Obviously, we would like not to play on the middle Sunday."

14:19 BREAKING NEWS: Unseeded Daniela Hantuchova has become the first player to reach the third round of the women's singles, after her opponent Elena Bovina withdrew with an abdominal strain

14:17 There are still no signs of any play in the south-west corner of London. Weather reports indicate that there will be three periods when play will be possible, but like the first two days, the players will be running on and off court regularly, if, they get the chance...

13:19 Still no sign of on-court action, the spectators that are here, are milling around the food halls and under the wings of Centre Court and Court One...

13:01 It's pouring with rain, and once again, play is delayed... with over 45 first round matches still to be completed, The Championship committee have a problem... the covers are on all of the court...

i'd not like to be a player there...
maybe it all added to the reasons of Elena's loss

Wimbledon: The Russians Are Going

Wed Jun 23, 2004 09:26 AM ET

By Bill Barclay

WIMBLEDON (Reuters) - Billed as the emerging force in women's tennis, the Russians have made a wretched start to this year's Wimbledon.

The withdrawal of 20th seed Elena Bovina due to injury is the latest blow to a nation who boasted eight of the 32 seeds in the women's singles when the tournament began.

Bovina comfortably won her first round match against Romanian qualifier Edina Gallovits 6-1, 6-2 but withdrew from the women's singles late Tuesday with an abdominal strain. Her absence gives revitalized Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova a walkover into the third round, where she could face another precocious Russian, 13th seed Maria Sharapova. Bovina's pullout followed the biggest upset in the women's singles so far when Russia's French Open runner-up and sixth seed Elena Dementieva lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic Tuesday.

Kleinova could barely walk for the much of the match due to a knee injury but found the guts and the shots to beat a desperately disappointing Dementieva, who reached the fourth round last year.

A few hours later eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova became the only the second winner of the pre-Wimbledon Eastbourne tournament to bow out in the first round at the All England Club in the last 30 years.

The stocky St Petersburg teen-ager, a quarter-finalist on her Wimbledon debut last year, lost 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 to French qualifier Virginie Razzano Tuesday, five days before her 19th birthday.

Her exit meant it was the first time in a decade that two of the top eight women's seeds lost in the first round.

It was all a bit of a come down after Dementieva and eventual champion Anastasia Myskina provided the first all-Russian grand slam final at the French Open two and a half weeks ago.

Second seed Myskina, Sharapova, 10th seed Nadia Petrova and 12th seed Vera Zvonareva are left to shoulder Russian hopes for the rest of the women's singles.

To make matters worse Tuesday, men's 19th seed Marat Safin, never exactly the biggest fan of grasscourt tennis, also lost in the first round, albeit to compatriot Dmitry Tursunov.

The outspoken Russian is never short of an opinion or two and he departed SW19 declaring, among other things, that he "hated" Wimbledon and might never return.

It all made sober viewing for former Russian President Boris Yeltsin on the day he rolled into a town to watch one of his favorite sports and cheer on his compatriots.

Nadia and Lena L. have to play a second round match. Nastya, Maria, Vera, and Tatiana in round 3.
For me, Sveta and Lina losing was bad, but Lena B. and Dinara getting injured was the worst part.gee-al...where is lena d's loss?!?!
4me...lena d's loss is da worst one...for RG finalist...

Looking at things now, Lina is recent, and it's Sveta's birthday. So I was feeling bad for them.
Elena D., I felt bad, but when Nastya was almost gone today, I was thinking that it was hard for both of them to recover from the unique situation. The French Open wiped them out. Nastya is just lucky to still be around.

Stephieva

I meant it was draining, physically and mentally, for both finalists. They needed a mental break.
Wimbledon is only 2 weeks later. Neither one is ready to play their best tennis.

Nastya is good enough to win tomorrow. After that, she's going to have to find her best game.
I think a Maria-Lindsay semifinal is very possible.

They're both playing well. It should be good. It's on Centre Court, so it should be on tv.
I thought today was a great tennis day. I was watching the Venus match, and the Nastya scoreboard.

The way Davenport is playing this year, she can lose to any decent player. Nadya was tearing her to pieces in Charlestone before her brain cramps started. Elena D. blew her off the court.

It's OK.. Not accidentally, our three big guns that we lost were those who had the biggest result of their career just recently. That probably had something to do with their Wimbledon fiasco. The three our big guns who are still in the draw are those who are supposed to be more motivated and eager. Things are not lookng bad. Yet.

It's great to watch different Russian players breaking through at two straight majors.
One result of that is more people in Russian Roulette.
I've reached the point where I can't read most of what's going on in so many different threads. Which is a good sign.
And wait 'till next year!
