I know it doesn't start until next week, but two of our players start qualifying tonight:
Ladies' Qual. Singles - 1st Rnd.
Virginie Pichet (FRA)[12] v. Christina Wheeler (AUS)
Evie Dominikovic (AUS) v. Ting Li (CHN)

I can't believe it but we have no men in quallies!

TS
Jun 15th, 2004, 07:05 AM
There are no men? Well, at the US Open there is a very strong possibility we will have no women in qualifying either.

Christina has a shot at Pichet...but I think she will come up short, as per usual.

Evie on the other hand has little chance of beating Ting Li. She'll do well to get a set.

Definatly wouldnt be a mental problem! He must be injured, what was the cut does anyone know??

How did Todd Reid get a Wildcard for Wimbledon too, DOes Australia have a reciprocol arrangement with the Brits as well? I thought that was only for the Womens? T hats 3 Wildcards to 3 GrandSlams in 1 year - Top effort Reidy! He's going to have to break into the Top 100 this year because they arnt going to give wildcards to him for too much longer...

well its 2 from 2 for the aussies today as evie has beaten Ting Li!!!!!!!!!!! 76(4) 16 64

in the next round evie plays number 14 seed tatiana panova of russia and christina has a great oppurtunity to reach the qualifying round when she takes on dutch player elise tamaela

id love to see them both get through to the third round but being realistic i think only christina will survive round two tomorrow night

I think Evie will win actually.... Panova has so many injuries and still isnt recovered yet and Evie must be playing great if she beat Ting Li.... Christina I don't know.... I think she can win but Tamalea loves grass so I dunno.... she desperately needs to win.

Tennis Australia's Oz E-Tenins newsletter states " Sadly, Peter Luczak missed the closing date for his entry while Paul Baccanello (SA) is still out with injury".

Ozfan i think you are being a bit harsh on Pete. It might have been a miscommunication between Peter and his camp? We dont know the real reasons why he missed the Qualifying Entry Deadline. Im sure it will all come out.

Larkam was way outside the cut off. On a positive side, Good to hear Scotty Draper is coming back next month :)

How do people rate Alicia's chances @ Wimbledon.

I was hoping she'd pull out the win vs. Schiavone but lost in a close match. Disappointing because I thought her game would be able to break down the backswings of the Italian. Ideally grass should be great for her serve and her best chance of making a HUGE impact at a slam i.e. semis, qtrs.

However I have a feeling that grass may not be her best surface. Alicia's game centres around what she does off the ground (particularly backing her serve). If she's connecting her groundies, particularly with her serve on song, then things happen - but I feel grass just wouldn't give her the time she prefers to hit her strokes like a hardcourt or even claycourt could especially off the return of serve.

A favourable draw she can do damage no doubt and she should live upto her seeding. However beyond that - I feel that her best results may be a few months later in the US.

Hopefully she proves me wrong.

I'm not convinced that Alicia will proceed any further than her seeding. She doesn't seen to be able to take advantage of the situation against higher seeds when she is one set up. She has lost so many winnable matches this year against players she could have won against. I wonder if there is some kind of block that stops her from beating players like Schiavone.

I think Molik should be sizing up a possible QF here, if she isn't she isn't fdoing herself justice, she has a great draw to the QF, she is in Dementieva's part and Molik is obviously going to be able to out serve her and she has a great game for grass. I think Sharapova will make the QF and she'd be tough for Molik.

I also think Stosur has a very good shot against Vera

Azza can you perhaps with your worldly knowledge what qualifies as trying? Personally I think Sam did well to get so close to a player ranked a lot higher than she did. I am quiet certain that Nicole would have been trying her guts out as per the norm.

All I can say is if you don't get 100% on all your school exams I hope that your parents don't smack you around and call you pathetic and accuse you of not trying.

You should be ashamed at some of the comments you made azza... Nicole Pratt & Samantha Stosur are among the Top 100 Womens Tennis Players in the World, I agree with AUSBOY it was never going to be an easy assignment for Pratty, Stosur earnt a Main Draw Entry into Wimbledon ( thats more than Evie & co. could manage - even Christina had to qualify!) and deserves more credit than she gets. I can guarentee that both Nicole & Sam would have been TRYING their guts out to win at Wimbledon!

Azza, you wouldnt know the first thing about trying, you just sit at your computer and watch computer scores - get out on the court and we will see how PATHETIC you are!

Arthurs Schmarthurs....I'd rather watch paint dry than sit through one of his matches. As you can tell I'm absolutely crushed by his loss.

Good luck to Christina later

I doubt they'd have a camera on Crt 17. I bet we only get to see Hewitt.

they do actually cos alicia played her 1st rd match and it was on tv
the numbers dont mean anything 17 and 18 r bigger than say 4 and5 :wavey:

Yeah arent 17 and 18 next to the main Stadium

but it is weird scheduling. Elena D played on court 18 and that was on foxtel . . . bit wierd though to have the 6th seed on court 18 but like aussieboy said the court set up in heaps different and perhapslike he said some other courts dont have TV coverage capibility
