A wooden-spoon list is a way of ranking the players in a tournament, based purely on who beats who.

Wooden-spoon theory formalises the intuition that it's better to lose to a player who goes on to do well in the tournament than to lose to a player who gets beaten in the next round.

A rigourous explanation of the theory can be found at my website (see sig. for URL). Here's the wooden-spoon list for the women's singles at the French Open 2004:

Rubin didn't play, her spot should go to (LL) Tzipora Obziler.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention - I hadn't noticed that Rubin was replaced in the draw. I've updated the wooden-spoon list accordingly.
