One of my friends, is a future star on the rise :)

She is still 16 (turning 17 this month)

First ITF main draw event :)

Bendigo ($25,000 - Australia) Feb 29 2004
Qual 2 S Gumulya(3) - K Wlodarczak 6-4 6-0
Qual 1 K Wlodarczak - M Antonic 6-2 6-2

She has groundstrokes like Dementieva, she hits her shots mostly with open stance and she is very fast. Has one of the fastest serves as well.

Watch out for her in the future :)

No, she is an age group below Dubz. I think Dubz will be in Europe when Donvale play Dendy Park in Singles would be a good match up though. I want to see how Karolina goes against some of the older girls in State Grade like Anabelle Elwood & Louise Field.

Karolina is back in action - she has been playing in the Tennis Victoria Womens State Grade Competition. She is still the No.1 player in Donvale's Womens State Grade Side & has faced some pretty tough competition in recent weeks...

Her first match back from injury a few weeks ago was against Olivia Lukaszewicz, who was filling at No.1 for Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.
Result : Karolina Wlodarczak lost to Olivia Lukaszewicz 6-7 1-6

Just last week Karolina again faced another tough opponent in Daniella Dominikovic, sister of Evie Dominikovic. Daniella also filling in at No.1 position for Royal South Yarra Tennis Club.
Result: Karolina Wlodarczak lost to Daniella Dominikovic 5-7 1-6.

Good experience for Karolina against some of the best young females in Australia!

SM
Sep 21st, 2004, 12:26 PM
same story against olivia and daniella..one close set coulda gone either way then got blown away

i guess its b/c she has had injuries and studies in the way lately?...still theyre not bad against two of australias best juniors

but i doubt she has dementieva-esque groundies :P

Should get a wildcard for the Aus Open and a lead up quallies event.

Nice score against Alicia too in the playoff. :)

Wow I didn't even know Karo had her own thread

This is a couple years old now, so it's good to see that in the years since this was started, she has finally delievered on some early promise and is just about in the top 500! I look forward to seeing how she goes next year when she travels abroad.

I think she's in line for a qualy WC at the Aussie Open, especially seeing as though she finished 3rd or 4th in the KIA WC race.

Good luck :)

Probably the only Aussie thread you've never posted in :p

I like the fact that she qualified in most of the 25K's and didn't get many handouts. Hopefully gets a AO quallie w/c and I can get down and see her.

jeeeez looking back was a bit harsh in my younger days!

I definately think Karolina should be rewarded with a qualies wildcard for aussie open and maybe also Hobart

the fact she finished 3rd in the KIA race is good enough reason, along with the fact week in week out she was always winning a couple of matches and performing well against higher ranked players!

Definately on the to watch list when i head over!

From what i have heard is kind of like Ivanovic is this true???

She was 2-3,30-0 on serve when the rain hit. Looks like she got wiped out once they came back on court. Having seen both players a few times before, I expected a bit closer a scoreline.....Oh well.

Considering she's never played an event outside Australia before and rarely gets to play top 150 players (if ever), I was expecting a 3 & 3 or something similar. I don't consider it a bad effort - Foretz has had some decent wins in her career.

Not having a tour overseas makes this a tough ask for her - she wasn't completely wiped so thats a good thing. Obviously still a fair way from tour standard but hopefully a year or two on the tour may help her. :)

I was actually surprised Karo beat Hori last year. If there was a type of game I'd pick Hori to do well against it would be against the likes of Karo & Emily Hewson.....
Let's hope Wlodarczak invests in some tournies overseas this year (she has finished school by now surely hasn't she??).......

It's bizarre. She'd easily be top 300 if she started playing o/s. Maybe it's just not happening financially. I have no idea what sponsorship or support from TA she has. I know this is a problem for a couple of the girls. Perhaps Karolina's parents aren't able to afford to send her o/s. She certainly hasn't made a great deal from sticking to Aus. Maybe she has a part-time job or something in which case we may see her o/s next year. It's really no good though is it?! She managed to get Casey to like 6-2,6-7,6-4 or something at Dendy Park, so who knows where she'd be if she would get o/s........the only thing is, she's a bit of a head case...lol.

 when?

Time for Karolina's report card...
Having reached two quarter finals, and extended an in form Casey Dellacqua to 3 sets, Karolina Wlodarczak, the 20 year old from Melbourne has had a great start to the year. She also competed in the qualifying draw of the Hobart WTA Tour event, but was deprived of a wildcard into the qualifying draw of the Australian Open. Since her Tennis Pro Circuit heroics however, Wlodarczak has failed to capitalise on her good form, and has not gone overseas to compete in a foreign event yet this year. Hopefully Danimoo proves to be correct and Karolina has a great run in the states...

I wonder what the "injury" was.

It sounds harsh but Karolina is building a reputation of retiring in matches once she thinks she doesn't have a chance at winning.

If she withdrew from dubz maybe she is injured, if so i hope she gets better soon!

Uh huh!! I saw her retire "injured" against Shannon in the $10k last year. Turns out she had a couple of blisters on her foot. The way she was crying when she retired, you'd think her foot was about to fall off.
The dub's here was the same day, so she would've been forced to forfeit after retiring in the singles.
But yeah you're right, she is getting a repuation for this. It'll be interesting to see how often it'll happen o/s though. It's a shame. She needs to learn to fight through these matches. She wouldn't have been expected to beat Liggan anyway. It's not like she was being shamed by an unranked opponent.

Maybe it was legit though. Seems odd after her 1st match since Kalgoorlie. Maybe she twisted an ankle or something. Who knows?!

mmmmm interesting, if thats the case that Karo's a bit of a sook. But she was in the match at 6-4 3-2, it would've had to be legit surely  Pretty good effort for her first match o/s against an experienced opponent.

Nice that she's finally o/s and making a shot of a tour career. From results she seems to have the ability to make a living from it.

Yeah, going by the odds. She couldn't play 3 in a row without retiring.
It's a real shame, cause if her heart was in it, she could make a really good career for herself. Had she tried, she potentially could've gone top 250 this year. Until she gets some tenacity about her, I don't see her ever going top 350....

I think the main reason Karolina was snubbed for a qualifying WC at the AO this year was that she hasn't been serious about playing regularly on the pro tour. The same thing may happen next year too.

Dani12
Oct 4th, 2007, 04:42 AM
I can't see why she doesn't realise she has enough talent too make it. If she trained hard and was serious she could be contending the top 200. Just look where she is at now without being totally committed.

I agree. There are plenty of other Aussie girls, some of whom may not be as talented, but are definitely a lot more dedicated than Karo.

My picks would be:
- Emily Hewson
- Karolina Wlodarczak
- Alison Bai
- Shayna McDowell (who also has some commitment issues IMO)
- Marija Mirkovic
- Alenka Hubacek
- Olivia Lukaszewicz
- Tyra Calderwood (provided she ends the year with a ranking) IF NOT then Sally Peers

I'd hope TA would be a bit more hesitant in wasting wc's on Dokic again after the last time & her poor attempts in the $10k & $25k European ITF's since. She shouldn't be considered for any wc's, not even qualie wc's since she couldn't be bothered to slog it out in the Aus $25k's yet again.

 Benita's not that bad :help:

I think Karolina WILL win easily. Benita's got the sort of game to get under Shannon's skin (which isn't very hard). She places the ball nicely and doesn't make many errors...she will be hard pressed winning more than 6 games IMO

Yeah, she mightn't be that bad compared to Azza!
Benita & her father (& Azza) are a really good argument for birth control! Not nice people...watch 1/2 an hour of one of her matches & listen to what her father says to her opponents during an un-umpired match & you'll know what I mean.
Hence the reason she'll never develop a dub's record with any other Aussies....

Definitely not, that'd be like slagging a certain Aussie chick because of her overly defensive mother ;)
Trust me on this one, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in this case.
You could literally watch her antics for 1/2 an hour & speak to any of the players & you'd get the drift.

I would love to see Karolina beat Sophie today (sorry Brettles )...

Soph is now firmly entrenched in the top 200 and has done consistently well over the past few months. On the other hand, Karolina has the ability to reach the top 300, and a win over a player like Soph may give her the confidence and motivation to chase a much higher ranking than at present. It would also give her some valuable ranking points and see her move well inside the top 500 once again...

Looks like Karolina is going to play college tennis in the US. This may explain her stop-start scheduling in the US a couple months back, and it also may explain why she really hasn't given the tour a fair crack this year.

I found this online, it's only about a month old - OSU is Oklahoma State University.

Good luck to her :) I hope she still plays ITF's when/if she can, cos it'd be sad to see her go...

http://ocolly.com/2007/09/28/australia-meets-us-on-women%E2%80%99s-tennis-team/ (http://ocolly.com/2007/09/28/australia-meets-us-on-women%E2%80%99s-tennis-team/)

In a program that boasts more world players than U.S. players, the OSU women’s tennis team added two Australian players to its roster this fall.

Jo-Anne Karaitiana and Karolina Wlodarczak are true freshmen and new to the United States. The transition to another country becomes easier, though, with a team and a coach who deal with the same situation each year.

Julius Lubicz-Majewski is entering his 19th year as coach of the team
“For a lot of our overseas players, the environment here is pretty tough,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “It can be difficult for them to adjust.”

Wlodarczak credited the team’s closeness with helping her get used to being so far from home. She said she still finds it difficult, at times, being away from her family, but the girls on the team help a great deal.

“We try and go to lunch or dinner a few times a week,” Wlodarczak said. “The girls have really been there for me.”

Wlodarczak will be sitting out this year but said she hopes the team will be able to do the best it can to continue the program’s winning tradition.

Thanks for posting this TS.

I stood up for Karolina a while back when she was criticised mainly because we had no other info about her apart from the fact she's played a little on the tour. Something like this shows that we shouldn't be so hasty in judging someone until we get a whole picture of something.

Good on her for committing to her education. The tour will still be there in a couple of years and hopefully she keeps the skill level up to compete at that time.

Vicky88
Nov 1st, 2007, 01:45 PM
I have to agree with you Loulou, it's probably a good move on her part. Getting an education is so important and if she can improve her tennis at the same time that is a bonus. Add in, it will get her used to being away from home so if she does choose to play on the tour once she graduates, it should be a bit easier on her.

Not a bad effort from Karo over the last three tournies. 2 2nd rnds, made it through quallies twice and tho got smacked by Pavlovic, she had a tough match prior.
Probably showing the effects of a lack of match play as earlier in the year she was able to take Dellacqua to three close sets and now seems a bit further away from the top 200-300.

Deserving of a AO quallie w/c by form and ability by thats not guaranteed at all. She'll need a decent run at the playoff Id think.

Congrats to Karo for winning her first WTA tour match - albiet a quallie one against an Aussie w/c. Though very impressive 6-3 6-0. Expected a bit more from Brittany Sheed tho.
Plays the Russian Sheveda (or something like that) who apparently is a bit psycho (Like Karo) - may have a bit of fireworks this one.

Sally didn't get a wildcard because (I suspect) she has snuck into the main draw. Well, she isn't in the qualifying draw so one must think she got directly into the main draw.

But I agree with you, what's the point in giving Karo another handout for her to retire AGAIN? I mean, she obviously has talent and the potential to go far, but has developed quite an unenviable reputation on the board.

There are other players in qualifying, such as Wejnert, who could put this wildcard to better use.

Karolina was on the entry list for the $10k in Spain this week, but has withdrawn and is not in anything else. Something could be wrong...

At least she's consistent  Ah Karo...I imagine she'll vanish for a couple months again and then pop up in some random place :)

p.s - She and her partner lost the doubles final in a 3rd set super TB 11-9. Ouch!

Well she's back with a QF last week in Switzerland. Now instead of playing the next Swiss 10K, she's off to Serbia.... lol.
Wel she's always had some strange scheduling. No joke - I think she's probably having a backpackers holiday and just going from country to country playing a tournie here and there. Why not!

Karolina just lost a close match against Catalina Castano in the qualies of the WTA tournament in Prague (funny how she goes for WTA tournaments with so few results behind her). She managed to bagel Catalina in the 2nd set and was 2 points away from winning at 5-4 30-30 (Castano serving) in the 3rd. Castano ended up winning 6-3 0-6 7-5, taking it on her 4th match point. Pity.

Karo's continues her backpacking adventures in Asia... Im sure she's on a travelling holiday and picking up and racquet once in a while!

Played quallies in China and got smacked by Lee.

Got even a tougher 1st round quallie in Korea - Llagostera Vives. Alot of moon balls in this one.

Good experience for Karo. She doesn't strike me as the type that sits on her laurels - she is very fit and very driven, and the fact she's been playing some WTA events shows me she might be serious about her tennis for once

Nah her scheduling is pretty smart and the score against L-Vives was a good one. She could be top 200 for mine, just needs to play a consistent schedule for two years.

Probably yes, Karolina said that wasn't too dangerous and they will healthy soon :)
Karo will play in main draw 25k$ Ipswich (2nd week of Miami) and qualies in Bundaberg (04th April). She hasn't place to live and practise in Europe now, because her club in Bundesliga is cancelled. She's searching other place, maybe she'll live in Poland or search other club in Bundesliga. She want to play USO qualies, if she will be healthy. She has a lot of injuries, in February she had another one. Hopefully she'll play in USO qualies  She needs about 160-180 points.
I will meet Karolina in 50k$ in Toruń (2nd week of Wimbly) :)

Daniel.
