It all depends on the opponent's culture, whether they are good friends, etc.
What a stupid question

BTW, I have seen Kim and Venus/Serena kiss at net.

None of the Americans do, because we are from a different culture in which we just don't do that.

It's mostly a non-American thing to do.

Lindsay doesn't do it, Jen doesn't, none of the American women do it. They only do it when the opponent leans forward to do it, and they don't want to leave them hanging.

i've seen Jen do it with Serena, Serena with Kimmie, same with Venus and ofcourse the sisters give eachother a big hug, but for the most part americans don't do that stuff because its not something we do.

Because, you see most of the Eastern European players wipe their hands either on the netcord or their dresses after they shake Venus and Serena's hand anyway, so I'm sure they would be repulsed by the prospect of touching black skin to white skin even more intimately!

Who wants to kiss a fellow competitor when what they honestly want to do is rip the other's throat out? They all want to cursh each other, kissing at the end is fake b.s.

Caz

I've never paid close attention to who kisses at the net and who doesn't, but I would imagine it is more usual when the match involves at least one European or South American player, becuase, as others have said, of the cultural difference.

For example, here in the UK, we're one of the few European countries where it's not so normal to kiss your friends, so I rarely kiss any of my British friends, (the only exception would really be the occasions where I am with a mixed group of English and Spanish people, where it seems a bit silly to kiss half the group and not the other half, just cos of their nationality), but when I meet my friends from other countries where its normal to kiss, I always kiss them, because it's culturally a very normal thing to do in their countries; I would imagine it is the same thing in this case.

Something I thought I would never see...Serena and Jen touching both cheeks and SMILING after Serena lost a tight match. IO 2004.

Serena had patted Jen on the sholder after EACH of her last EIGHT winning encounters.

Amazing that they seem rather friendly now. Their matchups are ALWAYS competetive.

Was about to say that I'd feel sorry for those girls to get kicked twice, once on court and once afterwards at the net.

Anyway, it depends on the culture, like in Brussels even guys kiss eachother on the cheek while in Flanders that's not done. Big deal...

lol Anna does kiss a lot, win or not. but not everyone. she had her arms oustretched so far from Martina once.who would want to? martina has this smug satisfaction on her face that's really annoying.lol

I don't remember Anna kissing Venus too in their last match, I think that was in Stanford. Probably it's a 'height thing' or maybe she knows the Williams are not accustomed to kissing players at the net anyways.

I think Monica feels comfortable kissing players that are friendly towards her.

It's not really hygienic to kiss people you don't know. Ever notice how Venus and Serena never tuck balls under their dresses or shorts during a match? They turn to get a ball every time they serve. It's not very hygienic to put dirty balls so close to ones pravite parts. BTW, Venus and Serena don't even kiss each other on court. American are more uptight about public displays of affection. While hugs are Ok, public kissing is deemed to a bit to intimate. Surely not all American feel this way, but a good bit do.

lol, what! it's not like they're sliding it up their vagina or something. it's on their leg (the side, or tucked into an upside down ball holder on the inside)... and legs are way cleaner than hands...

the only thing that bothers me is when i see an opponent wipe their forehad on a ball.... that's just gross

We discussed this on the ESPN forum a while ago: it turns out that it's the European girls who don't want to kiss Venus & Serena.

On several occasions we observed that V & S leaned forward to kiss their foes but they were refused a sisterly kiss.

Racial insensitivity? Anti-Americanism? Jealousy???

We did not come up with any real consensus. Still, it would be good to see everyone treating each other with respect and care.

The sisters probably won't kiss their opponents after the match unless the opponent initiates it. They are used to the handshake and pat on the back. Regarding the Serena/Momo thing last year I remember it and Serena leaned WAAAAY over the net, but it seems like Momo took to long to kiss her so she just pulled back. Someone asked if Vee kissed Kim before, yeah she kissed her after the Wimbledon semi last year.

Serena did pull back, but Momo took along time so Serena probably didn't think Momo was going to kiss her and Momo leaned forward just as Serena leaned back. It's not like Serena was pissed off at the net or anything.

They don't want to be seen showing affection to white people in public because some black people call them 'h*nky lovers'. Besides black people hate same sex intimacy or anything there off.

If I were the Williams, I'd get out of the kissing thing. Serena and Venus used to kiss Justine and we all know what Justine did - she cheated - those are opponents and most opponents are jealous, especially if you are Rich and Famous and have it going on.
