I guess it's normal, the williams sisters brought a whole new group of fans to the courts who were not fans before like every champion who has a totally different style and his own, different story does.

I'm sure also Kim and Justine brought many new (belgian) fans to the tour, but because the achievements of Dominique and Sabine already were a bit amazing for such a small country like Belgium (they were 2 of our main sports(wo)men), a lot of people here in Belgium followed the tennis already a bit.

90% of the posters here know nothing about tennis before 2000... understandable, as the Belgians and the Williamses brought huge new groups of fans to tennis, and a lot of those fans are stupid.

It's only annoying when they claim that their player is the best ever, even if the stats say otherwise, because of nonsense like "there never used to be any competition"... otherwise, it's just quite funny to watch them show their ignorance.

It's certainly not just Williams fans, though a lot of Williams fans aren't very clever or knowledgeable.

what a pathetic post... isnt it obvious? the williams started their domination really in 1999, so most of their fans got into tennis during 1999, and started following them since then... But a lot of people, including me, a lot of fans I meant, know a lot of stuffs about tennis before 1999..

If you meant that we (williams fans) are stupid because of that, think again, and guess whos really stupid?

Nothing wrong with getting interested after Venus and Serena became popular.

But are you one of those fans that brags about how the ratings skyrocket when Venus or Serena is in a tournament, and decline when there's not a Williams in the tournament?

The explanation for that is simple. Many Williams fans won't watch tennis unless a Williams is playing. They're Williams fans first, tennis fans second (if at all).

Can't speak for Jack, but I played (and watched) tennis way before the Williams sisters were around.

Your statement though, is what pisses people off about Williams fans. What's up with all of this "lilly white" bullshit? What pisses people off is you guys calling non-fans "racist" (that's basically what you're saying with your "lilly white" comment....and it's been said outright before).

Disgustingly enough, it's you guys that want to make it about "black vs white" and some of you get some sort of satisfaction not from Williams or tennis but from "black beats white". You may deny, but you know it's true.

For me, I started watching/following/playing tennis after I saw Venus vs. Martina in the U.S. Open Semis 1999. Before then I had never watched a whole match, or played in my life. Now I'm a 5.0 future pro, and Venus's #1 Fan.

I went by a tennis camp the other day and saw a whole bunch of children (40 t0 50 of them) hitting tennis balls. Some across the nets, others just on the field with no net. They must have been 9 or 10 years old, all amazingly claiming to be Williams fans. I'm talking here about Canada not even the States where the phenomenon might be more pronounced. Let me tell you, I didn't expect them to know about tennis prior to year 2000! People, young or old, are just what they are and know just what they know; granted everybody can learn and usually does.

Williams fans, hey, they come in all ages and all colors; all religions too, I suppose. One thing they have in common, I've noticed, is that they are all excited about their faves. I am. The excitement often clouds the vision of the non-discerning observer and he/she may conclude it's all about the sisters and not tennis. Wrong ... It's tennis first. If it were a question of ethnicity, some of these fans (herein being pigeon-holed) could have easily navigated towards other fields of endeavor or sports where there are more successful blacks.

Same reason as someone starting in 1988 wouldn't know much about Evert or Goolagong. Plus there are new groups of fans who like the williams whilst some people prefer what ca,e before. but as fans is fickle and individual you also have fans who support players that only they can see anything in common between.

Well one thing I know for sure, my favorite current player on tour will beat your favorite current player on tour more often than not...jealous much??

The truth of the matter is we all knew this thread starter was off the mark when he/she stated "most" Williams fans. The only thing that "most" Williams fans have in common with each other is their respect and admiration for one or both of the sisters, contrary to popular beleif we are a group of fans just as diverse as any other group (maybe even more so). So many people get really eager to lump all Williams fans into one small group, but that just shows their ignorance.

I've been watchin' tennis since the mid 80's but what's the relevance in that? Everyone started watchin' at one point and prior to that point most people don't go back in time to see what happened in the world of tennis 15 years prior. It's interesting that the thread starter singled out Williams fans cuz honestly 90% of the topics on the GM board have to do with what's happening in today's game- not what happened in the 80's. :wavey:

Black Mamba.
May 30th, 2004, 02:30 AM
I'm just a fan of tennis, but my question is what does it matter if a certain set of fans don't know something about tennis before their favorties came along? Before Michael Jordan started playing basketball I was interested in basketball, but I became a fan when he came into the league and I'm still a fan after he left but just because I didn't follow basketball closely before he came into the league doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan than those who follwed the sport before I did. To say that the Sisters' fans are stupid or unknowledgable just because some may not know about tennis before 1999 is unfair because to them tennis wasn't cool or worth watching until Venus and Serena came onto the scene, but they gave them a reason to watch so to them knowing about a tennis past that doesn't include their favorties is sometimes irrelevant. Someone also said that the sisters' fans think they are the greatest to ever play the game, I don't know if someone said that, but if they did it is just like when people say Kobe Bryant is better than Michael Jordan those who say that weren't probably fortunate enough to see Michael play in his prime, just like those who may claim Serena and Venus are the greatest to ever play probably never saw Martina Nav play in her prime. They make these comparisionsnot because they are trying to disrespect legends, but because they have such faith and confidence in their favorite players that they are the best because they never watched the greatest play.

Well said. I think the problem comes when we get all those threads saying williams sister on 27 match winning run - where we think Navratilova isn't worrying yet then or the ones that came not from board members but the WTA itself about Justine breaking the points record oblivious of the fact that she had less points than Hingis, navratilova or Graf if you used the same rules to add up the points. Support is fine. Perspective needs perspective.
