View Full Version : Sporza?

I've heard that there will be a VRT sports channel, called Sporza, who will broadcast all the big sports events, including tennis.

Does this mean we won't get anymore sports on Canvas? That would be really worrying because Sporza will only be available on cable in Flanders and Brussels... No hertzian broadcasting!

Does anyone know more about this?

If I read correctly there will be no more sports on Canvas, because it there is going to be so much sports this summer and it would overlap the programs on Ketnet. So they decided to move all the sports to a new channel: Sporza.

So, the Walloons won't be able to see a single bit of sports on VRT... Great!

Sporza is a temporarely sportschannel for this summer, so the kids can have their ketnet. So no sport on ketnet/canvas at all this summer.

I didn't know sporza will not be available for the Walloons :( But you can watch ketnet (Samson, Bob the builder, ...) now all summer, turt :p

turt
May 28th, 2004, 05:21 PM
I hope they will show Samson with Justine then :p

Sporza won't be available for Flemish people without cable either, so that's stupid anyway...

Well, I'm not surprised at all, why would they share the sports rights they paid with Walloons? I'm not going to talk about politics in this thread, but given the current tendancy, it was to be expected... (what about the VRT's "must-carry" status? )

I'm sure they didn't do it for political reasons, it just was the easiest way. First they asked the commercial channels to cooperate, but they didn't want to, so VRT did it on his own.

I'm sure RTBF will broadcast lots of tennis, no?

Well, then why don't they broadcast this channel on walloon cable? VRT, as a public TV company, has a "must carry" status for its channels, that means everyone in Belgium should be able to watch their programs if they have a TV...

Of course, RTBF will show tennis, but for instance today they didn't show Sharapova-Zvonareva, which was broadcasted on Canvas. Two channels is always better than one, because the coverage is not exactly the same!

Also, I'm not sure whether RTBF has the Olympics rights, but VRT does. So, that means Walloon viewers won't be able to see the Olympics

arn

I don't know if that 'must carry' also goes up for that third channel... I think it will be funded by advertising (not sure), so if this is the case it is seen as a commercial channel.

You can watch the BBC, NOS or French Television ( France 2 and France 3) if you want to watch the Olympic Games.

You don't have to be mad at Sporza hitself but well sometimes to our silly cable industries.

There already is one: Eurosport  :cool:That's not the same, just a translation of the english one with some sports nobody in the benelux cares about (curling :tape: )

I mean a real channel with a newsbulletin focused on benelux sportsmen, specific broadcasts of popular benelux sports, a quiz,....

It would be great for the sportsmen (a bigger market for sponsoring), the viewers, the relations between the netherlands and belgium. Also some specific belgian sports and specific dutch sports could attract new sportsman from the other side of the benelux to make those small sports more competitive.

And we know that each country on its own cannot pay for it...

The VRT has nothing to do with that 'must-carrage' status. It are the walloon kabelcompanies that have this obligation. Probably they were left free to follow it or not, and they decided not to... So don't blame the VRT :)

I'm sure they do have the rights for the Olympcs, they never go to a commercial channel. I read something that it is in the 'european law' that the olympics must be broadcasted by a public channel (so that as much as possible europeans can watch it).

I read something that it is in the 'european law' that the olympics must be broadcasted by a public channel (so that as much as possible europeans can watch it).Yeah, but I've read that RTBF was reluctant to buy the whole Olympics package because they couldn't afford it... So if the RTBF didn't pay for the rights, commercial channels can't buy them anyway, and that means there won't be any coverage.

Maybe now they have found an agreement to buy a "light package", but last time I heard of that, the company who sells the rights didn't want to do that...

Concerning Sporza, I think it's a great initiative, but then why do they make a better offer for less people, and totally suppress the sports offer to Flemish people who don't have the cable? Some people can't afford it, or have satellite + the hertzian channels... They pay anyway for the VRT's budget! And what about Flemish people who live in Wallonie (I know quite a few)...

Whatever the reason is, it sucks...

I've searched the internet to get more info, and apparently there will be 4h30 of live Olympics per day on RTBF (light schedule). Canal + (pay tv) and AB3 (cable TV available in Brussels and Wallonie) want to pay RTBF to get the right to broadcast boxing, football and basketball...

So it's not as bad as I thought, but still it sucks :(

Yeah, but it's like the first time they show doubles tennis on TV since The Olympics in 2000 when Domi and Els won the bronze medal...
Why making such a fuss about it when even Kim winning a doubles Grand Slam didn't get one second of broadcasting?

Anyway, I'll watch the match, as I don't have cable here, but I'd have preferred these Women's Semi-Finals...
You are so right :fiery:

You are so right :fiery:Well, it was an entertaining match, probably better than the Myskina-Capriati match (I saw the second set and Cappy played crappy), but anyway...

Let's hope Oli and Xav will win the damn thing now! lol

(And Come on Nastya! ;) )

In retrospect, I think the men's doubles was far more entertaining & exiting than any of the women's singles ;) (as far as I can tell, I admit I only saw part of the Capriati-Myskina match :) )
