pricisely because it's so unpredictable (and yes, i know this is supposed to be good for women's tennis but it's not good for my delicate nerves. ;))

this is what's happened so far: Justine out in the 2nd round to a player ranked 86th in the world, both Amelie and Jen challenged respectively in the second and 1st round, promising players like Sprem beaten in the first round...

are most people still convinced that only amelie, venus, serena, jen or davenport could win or are we going to see more upsets over the next few rounds?

i am beginning to get nervous.... :scared:

Who the hell says the same players have 2B in the SF's and beyond all The Time? Did Iva ruin RG by winning It In '97? Did Mary in Y2K? Plus, upsets are necessary for new stars to emerge; you know that missing "depth" Ppl Post About All The Time?

Shheeesh, I was merely expressing my fear that my fave (Venus) might have a difficult time in view of the difficulty many of the top players are having and the general unpredictability of the tournament so far. I did not say this was undesirable of tennis in general. Okay? :wavey:

As ANYBODY'S favorite player should! That's what makes someone like Venus a great player: ovacoming serious challenges. And no player (or team) will always win. It's called "sports" I think. If victory were certain, why bother keeping score?

Yes, you can cross Patty of the list!!

Asagoe is a good player, but a player like Asagoe shouldn't be beating Patty on her favourite Surface. Juts not good enough Patty, Find a Coach and get that Serve Percentage up, thats the sole reason you were defeated today!

i am surprised by the result as well. i thought patty would make a grand come-back when she got it back to 4-5 after being down 1-5 in the 3rd set.

Patty :help: :help:

All my favorites lost in the 1st and 2nd round :fiery: But, in a sense, it gives some kind of unpredictable fun to the Open. But I would've preferred to be surprised by some other players's defeats...

Rothes

Shes a great fighter Patty is at making a comeback late in the set, Not that it was to late or anything, but After breaking Asagoe's serve Twice, then loosing hers to level it 5-5, it is indeed a waste, I cant emphasize that If she got to 1-1 int he Third, when she had 2 Points, the match may have been a little different, This is one of the first times I am frustrated with Patty. Extremely Dissapointed.

The upsets are cool for the few of us that have favorites outside the top 20.

I'm a Tax Garbin fan. Sorry for the Justine fans that she's out, but yesterday's match was my favorite match that I have seen on TV in the last couple of years.

Infiniti 2001-

I have no idea where Tax came from Tathiana either.

Maybe Tathiana has a younger sibling who tried to say "Tathiana" when they were learning to talk and it came out "Tax" and the nickname stuck.

The one thing I do remember is it says her nickname is Tax on her WTA website profile, so it's not a name somebody on the board made up for her.

Biggest Shocks so far of tournament for me:

Justine losing so early!!!!!

Karolina Sprem falling at the first hurdle

Players like Zheng, Perebiynis, Weinegartner and Irvin coming through to the third round.

Capriati struggling against lowly-ranked qualifiers

I agree with you. I think all the players believe that they can win and it all started when Andre lost in the first round. It's so different from any Grand Slam I've ever seen on the women's side. And people complain that the early rounds at Grand Slams are boring in women's tennis?

Where did the nickname Tax come from??

It's a brilliant nickname... because in scoring threads, you can say things like "Tax breaks!"

I am seriously loving these upsets (apart from the Nadia one) - this has been such an awesome tournament so far.

I'm also loving the fact that the one top player everyone was convinced would be upset in the first week was Nastya... and look who's stuck around

I like Nastya but if she ends up going to the final or winning the FO, I'll be surprised as hell (as I have been this entire tournament anyway so maybe I should expect the unexpected).

With all the talk about Justine (gone), Lindsay (gone), Momo, Jen, Venus, Serena etc, could it be that one of the Russians will win it?? Does anybody think that could happen?

May 30th, 2004, 11:55 AM
One thing's for certain, almost all the players expected to do really well here are gone. These are players who have had a great clay court season. Loit, Sprem and Zvonareva are just a few of them; even Lindsay.

Venus, who has had a great clay court season, is the main one left, hopefully some of that expectation was lifted when she wound up injured. And frankly for me Venus is not playing the way I'd like to see her play, but we'll see. One match at a time.

Serena loses a 3 setter against Jen-- understandable, I suppose, as they always have tough matches.

But Venus.... 43 UFE and only 12 winners. That's just bad. (Please come back better and stronger for Wimby!! :wavey: )

Poala beat Maria Sharapove in two easy sets-- most people were predicting a Maria win.
