For Grand Slams - Monica Seles. After each of her wins at a Slam, she never lost the next year. Nine times. A record that nobody can hold up to.

91, 92, 93 Australian - didn't play in 94
96 Australian - didn't play in 97
90, 91, 92 French - didn't play in 93
91, 92 US - Didn't play in 93.

Of active players, definately Seles at #1. Serena? She's defended Miami twice, and Wimbledon once. What else? Not much but there aren't many players on tour these days who CAN defend their titles, so she's up there. Venus? Yeah, for sure. Defended Wim, US once each, antwerp, new haven, etc. Lindsay? Maybe. Not a GS, but is good at defending Tokyo.

Navratilova defended lots of titles. Here are some of her notable title defences:

Wimbledon 1978-1979, 1982-1987
Season-ending Championships (1982-1986: six in a row because the Virginia Slims Championships were held twice in 1986)
US Open 1983-84, 1986-87
Avon/Virginia Slims of Chicago (1978-1983, 1986-1988, 1990-1992)
Avon/Virginia Slims of Dallas (1979-1983, 1985-1986, 1988-1989)
Eastbourne (1982-1986, 1988-1991)
Houston (1976-1979)
Tournament of Champions, Orlando (1980-1985)

Graf:
Wimbledon 1988-1989, 1991-1993, 1995-1996
Australian Open 1988-1990
French Open 1987-1988, 1995-1996
US Open 1988-1989, 1995-1996
Season-ending Championships 1995-1996
Key Biscayne 1987-1988, 1994-1996
Berlin 1986-1989, 1991-1994
Hamburg 1987-1992
Zurich 1986-1987, 1989-1992
Leipzig 1990-1993

Seles is nowhere near number one, you can't defend if you don't win.

Graf is the queen of title defense at Berlin. I believe she won it 4 straight times, lost to Seles in the next final, then went on to win it 4 times in a row again.

Martinez is the queen of title defense at Rome. Won it 4 straight times.

Also forgot Monica won the year end championships 3 straight years but wasn't entered in '93. I think Monica also won Madrid twice.

the only reason that is is because she hasn't been able to defend.

Who's stuck in a timewarp? You asked "Best at defending their titles." There was no mention of timeframe, so being open for interpertation, I commented upon the one I thought was very good at defending her titles. There's no reason to have an attitude. I guess if you want everyone to say that your favorite is the best at whatever, then you should phrase your question so there is only one possible answer.

I didn't know Monica won 53 titles between '91-'93. Sounds like someone is a lil' jealous their fav isn't the best at title defense. :bigcry: :crying2: :hysteric:

Antwerp 02-03
Gold Coast (I think) 01-02

She only played Gold Coast in 02. Nasdaq 01 doesn't count because she wasn't defending. I think you may have covered all the others.

Serena has hardly defended anything. She shouldn't be on the list.

Hingis was pretty good.

Of the current players, I would take Venus. Remember in 2001, she defended almost all of her summer titles, except one Tier II. Two Tier II's, two slams. That was really amazing. No one seems to play in long enough stretches to defend too many titles anymore! She also won Pilot Pen like 4 times in a row, I believe.

Serena's problem is that she usually doesn't play the tournament the next year after winning.
