View Full Version : Lena in Paris

Lena is #26 in the world this week, and will be seeded for the French Open.
Lena won the mixed doubles championship at the last major, the Australian Open.

Yes, and Lena has decided not to play Strasbourg.

As of now, Lena looks to be the 25th seed at Roland Garros... with the only official withdrawal ahead of her is Kim Clijsters.

The different between the 24th and 25th seed is quite significant, so let's see what happens.

If Lena plays well, it might matter. If Lena plays like the Vera match, 24 or 25, it won't matter.

May 17th, 2004, 05:47 PM
We assume she'll play well.

I'm all about the doubles. Dechy again? I know the mixed partner should be Nenad.

Hi.

Singles is of the utmost importance.

goldenlox
May 17th, 2004, 05:52 PM
Doubles at the majors is where you get paid. Singles for show, doubles for dough.

- L i n a -
May 17th, 2004, 05:55 PM
I'm sorry, but I don't give a damn about Lena's financial status.

I like tennis.

goldenlox
May 17th, 2004, 05:59 PM
Doubles is tennis too(2). Singles or doubles, you won't get to see Lena on tv.

- L i n a -
May 17th, 2004, 06:01 PM
I saw Lena's US Open Quarterfinal.

If she gets that far again, there's a good chance we'd see her.

goldenlox
May 17th, 2004, 06:08 PM
ESPN didn't show the all Russian semi in Miami. Lena needs to play Capriati, a Williams, or Davenport.

- L i n a -
May 17th, 2004, 06:12 PM
ESPN has a lot more time to fill. Especially, when their boy Roddick loses early.

And those are the players Lena would likely face in the 4th round or Quarters... so, there is a shot she'll be on TV.

goldenlox
May 17th, 2004, 07:29 PM
You're still assuming Lena makes the quarters. Let's get through the first two rounds.

I'm trying to be positive like the Masha fans.

Maybe it will work.

goldenlox
May 17th, 2004, 10:16 PM
The Masha fans stare at the pictures. Try that.

I've fiddled with myself to my Lena pics. :rocker2:

goldenlox

LOL! The players should play in sweatsuits. Fans have dirty thoughts.

May 17th, 2004, 10:41 PM
Lena does in practice sometimes.

Roses are red, I love to receive them on a date;
Lena B. can play good tennis, if she would only gain some weight.

What would you call your post?
Anyway, when the draw comes out tomorrow, I'll be bumping up a lot of threads.

Let's predict which round Lena loses in.

I say 3rd.

goldenlox
May 21st, 2004, 04:08 AM
I need to see the draw. I want Lena in all three events. She didn't play women's doubles in Melbourne.

Nenad Zimonjic beat Agassi this week in singles.

Confidence is high.

Let's nab the Mixed Grand Slam in 2004.

goldenlox
May 21st, 2004, 01:52 PM
Great draw for Lena. Two winnable matches, and then Capriati, who Lena is confident against -

Jennifer Capriati USA (7) vs. Yulia Beygelzimer UKR
Qualifier vs. Qualifier

Anna-Lena Groenefeld GER vs. Samantha Stosur AUS
Qualifier vs. Elena Bovina RUS (25)

- L i n a -
May 21st, 2004, 03:18 PM
Pretty good draw for Lena to get to the 3rd round... Anna-Lena and Stosur have won a few matches on clay this year, so it won't be that easy.

However, Jen would be much harder to face here, then in their first 2 matchups. Very unlikely Lena gets past the 3rd round... the only hope was drawing Nastya.

goldenlox
May 21st, 2004, 03:38 PM
Everyone wants to be in Nastya's section. If Lena wins two rounds, the Capriati match is gravy, and I believe in confidence, and head-to-heads.

May 21st, 2004, 03:40 PM
Lena has zero confidence, and she'd still be that way if she got to the 3rd round.

How much confidence could Lena have had in Moscow. She had lost in the US Open first round, then was off 5 weeks.
Lena likes playing Capriati.

cat, are you still a member of ********************? There's an article on Anna. Could you post it in her forum? Thanks.
I expect Lena to win at least two matches each in singles, doubles, and mixed.

Lena plays Roberta Vinci, who is 21, and ranked about #110. Vinci lost in the qualies in both Berlin and Rome.

Yes GL, I'm still a member of ********************. But I deleted that story from my email after reading it. But I can go to thier website and try to post the link from there. The gist of the story is that Anna is happy and she's not coming back to the WTA Tour anytime soon. But she will be playing exhos and WTT this summer.

How did you know I was a member of ********************?

goldenlox
May 22nd, 2004, 08:18 PM

I'll post the link for you now GL. And I'll double your pleasure by posting it in Anna's forum and in her cheering thread. :) Miss Lox, I'm impressed with all the college stuff on your mind you would remember that I am a member of ********************. ;)

Lena has an excellent first round matchup in Roberta Vinci.

You are welcome, GL. Unfortunately there are hardly ever any quotes from Anna anymore. :(

goldenlox
May 22nd, 2004, 10:07 PM
I don't think Anna wants to do all the work it takes to come back. She has an easy life now.
The pro tour is a hard life, a lot of work, effort.

- L i n a -
May 22nd, 2004, 11:59 PM
What is this Anna fluffernutter doing in my Lena's forum?!

the cat
May 23rd, 2004, 12:54 AM
GL always has Anna on the mind, Lina. ;) And GL makes a pertinent point about how Anna is enjoying the easy life. Maria Sharapova basically said the same thing in Rolling Stone in a 2001 issue and people criticised Masha for it at Kournikova.com. But Masha was right about Anna getting soft after becoming so rich adn how that negatively affected her tennis. Now GL realizes it too. Anna has it too easy to have to work hard just to become a top 50 player let alone a top 20 player. It really doesn't matter to Anna that she has never won a WTA title and probably will never win a WTA title. Sometimes I think her fans are more upset about this than she is.

goldenlox
May 23rd, 2004, 03:15 PM
I'm glad that Anna is enjoying the easy life. All these players deserve to make enough money to have that option. I think Anna loves tennis and will still play a few tournaments.

Lena doesn't play on Monday.

- L i n a -
May 23rd, 2004, 03:34 PM
I don't care about Anna. Take it to her forum.

Lena plays Vinci on Tuesday. This is a good matchup for Lena.

Lena is making slight progress. Really better things to come in the second part of the season. :) She's better than a year ago.

What happened to Lena last year in RG?
She beat Golovin in the 1st round... then lost to Grande, losing the last 16 points of the match. :crying2:

Lena is only having a better clay season this year, because she's healthy. Her results are nothing to be too proud of.

Ugh... Capriati just survived a tight 3 set win over Beygelzimer, while not playing her best.

Hopefully, Jen can put up another performance like that in a possible 3rd round matchup.

Good job, my sweet Lena.

Let's keep getting our opponents injured... it makes our job easier.

At least Lena's the game to trouble Jenny, what she proved in the past. Hopefully she'll do better than against Zvonareva. Expect better things to come for Lena in the second part of the season as for the majority of the Russian players.

Lena, you better make up for Vera and Nadya's disappointment today.

This tournament is quickly becoming a disaster.

the cat
May 28th, 2004, 08:44 PM
The slow red clay court will give Lena time to unleash her dangerous ground strokes. Capriati will have her hands full with Bovina. My big worry for Elena is that Jenny will overwhelm her with her power, incredibly strong physique and great speed around the court. But if Elena can get into the match she will have a chance to cause the upset.

Udachi Elena!

I think Jen wins in an easy blowout...

Let us look at all of Lena's results against seeded players this year on red clay (excluding Patty, who was injured):

Warsaw (http://www.geocities.com/wtatur/tur2004/wars1520.htm) Tier II 33 points May 2 04
2 Francesca Schiavone (http://home17.inet.tele.dk/wta/sp/schi694.htm)(9) - Bovina 6-2 6-3

Berlin (http://www.geocities.com/wtatur/tur2004/berl1529.htm) Tier I 27 points May 9 04
2 Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://home17.inet.tele.dk/wta/sp/kuzn1501.htm)(10) - Bovina 6-2 6-0

Rome (http://www.geocities.com/wtatur/tur2004/rome1538.htm) Tier I 80 points May 16 04
3 Vera Zvonareva (http://home17.inet.tele.dk/wta/sp/zvon1425.htm)(8) - Bovina 6-3 6-0

It's a good news bad news scenario for Elena. The good news is that she gave Capriati a tough match and seems to be back in good form. But the bad news is that she lost the match and she could have won it. And that would have done wonders for her confidence.

bovina was so close to winning the match...btw i didn't know that elena was seeing a psychologist...d commentator said that she's seeing one to help her mental game becoz its the the one part of her game that she needs to improve on...DAMN lena should have won that match...she was so amazing in the second set...hitting winners and serving into the corners...she outhit capriati in a lot of the rallies...i hope this match although she lost it would have a good effect on her confidence...and that psychologist of her better tell her that ;)
