Seles, meanwhile, also asked for and was given a wild card but then decided she wasn't fit, Proust said.

Seles' agent did not immediately return a call Thursday.

The nine-time major champion is recovering from a lingering left foot injury and hasn't played a competitive match since losing in the first round at the 2003 French Open.

In an interview in February, Seles said she's thought about retiring.

``It does go through my mind, because my brain wants to be out there, playing or practicing, but my body says, 'Wait! Hold on!' I have to listen to my body,'' Seles said then. ``I'm not 18 years old anymore. Not that 30 is old, but I started so young, and my body has taken a lot of pounding.

Kart! You've recently had the Corrs and now Abba as your avatar! They're two of my favorite groups ever! We share the same taste in music.

Hi Spirit :hearts:, glad you approve ;) - with Eurovision in two days and the 30th anniversary of Waterloo coming up, Abba are getting the avatar space for now but the Corrs are going back in there next week with their new album out in a couple of weeks.

As for Monica being out of the French open, I haven't been this distressed since I missed out on Gaby Sabatini's webchat  :bigcry:  :( :explode: :smash:   .

Ok I'm over it now, on to Wimbledon Monica , you're still :inlove:and you can kip at my house if you like .

This really isn't surprising at all. I hope that Monica can return sometime this year. All the best to her.

Seles:I'm not 18 years old anymore... my body has taken a lot of pounding. Whenever you hear something like this, it makes you think and sob. I figure retirement is not too far. I just wish she could leave with a bang, ie, after a big title.

I doubt she'll play Wimby, she'll probably wait until the hartcourts begin.

Sad,sad....saddest career in sports history. Of course everybody´s gotta retire sometime, but with Monica you just got the feeling that there was much much much more than just 9 slams in her career.

It is very sad news. Now I somehow doubt that she will return to WTA at all, but I sincerely hope to see her playing again. My interest in watching tennis will plummet with her retirement.

It's not up to you to decide when she retires. She can do as she pleases.
Thanks.

But she is not saying that she is retiring, something tells me that match against Petrova was not the last of her career.

It's a least encouraging that she felt well enough to ASK for the wildcard. :D

I feel certain she doesn't want her last match to be a 1st round loss at the French Open. She'll be back, and I'll be all crying when she's on the court...

When Monica wants to retire is completely up to her.

Anyway, at this news! I was looking forward to seeing my all-time fave back on court in Paris.

But if Monica reckons it's too early for her body to endure serious workouts, then I hope she'll find time to rest up before coming back on Tour. The last thing I wanna see is Monica suffering from injury again. She's gone through so much upsets in her life, and it's not fair Monica might have to retire by being forced out, not when she chooses to

Rest up and get well soon Monica!!! Me and the rest of the Selestials will always love and support you!!! (yeah, cheesy, I know :p )

I'm sad not to see her back  but I prefer she doesn't return until she is totally fit, it would be even sadder that she came back and have tons of bad losses (Even though probably she would win some matches)... Keep taking your time Monica and make a great comeback :hearts:

I wanted to express my sadness earlier today, but it seems as if something at the login is not working correctly...

anyway I am so sad that she won't participate in the FO. I was looking so much forward to see her playing again. She is currently looking so fit...that damned foot. Now we Monica fans will just have another boring Grand Slam....how I miss her

Go Monica...come back soon!
