Tennis-I'm fit only for women's tennis, says Ivanisevic

ZAGREB, May 13 (Reuters) - Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic says his serve is now so weak that he would struggle to beat the Williams sisters.
On Wednesday the 32-year-old lost in a first round doubles match in a Zagreb challenger tournament when he was playing with a 15-year-old fellow Croat. Instead of cursing and smashing rackets -- the trademark of his 13-year career -- the 2001 Wimbledon champion explained that time and injury had taken their toll on his once feared serve.

"My serve is not as good as it used to be. Other guys hit much harder... Now I am ideal for women's tennis.

"Serena, Venus and me -- what a fight that would be," he was quoted as saying in the daily Jutarnji List on Thursday. Ivanisevic still dreams of playing one more time at the All England Club. However, his injured left arm is becoming increasingly troublesome, making him wonder if he should just rest before this year's Wimbledon tournament.

"If only I could know my opponent (at the French Open). I would certainly agree to play (Andre) Agassi, but who could be bothered if they draw me against an unknown?

"Then again, perhaps Roland Garros would show the condition of my arm. I am not sure if it would last for five sets."

Ivanisevic's ranking has dropped to below 400 and he relies on wild cards to get into top events.

Go Goran!:D

I love Goran - he's so funny!

"Serena, Venus and me -- what a fight that would be,"

It's not funny, just another dig at womens tennis.

A journalist asked him once if he would consider play mixed double... His answer: "I'm not that desesperate".

Basically in this case he says: "I suck now, I'm good for womens tennis".

THANK YOU! I dislike Ivanisevic immensely-- He's homophobic and I will never forgive him for robbing Rafter of his 2001 Wimby crown. :(

If he didn't have a great serve, he wouldn't be able to beat the top 5 women players !!

May 13th, 2004, 02:31 PM
Goran  .

He may not be desperate enough for mixed doubles, but I doubt the WTA is desperate enough for him yet.

I wonder if he's willing to play against Monica seeing that he wouldn't dance with her in 1992.

He is so funny

I also don't think his comment was funny, especially considering the stupid things he's said before (especially the "******" comments). He seems like a decent guy, but he needs to grow up a little.

May 13th, 2004, 03:16 PM
People are taking him too seriously. Of course everyone knows women's tennis isnt as good a standard as mens tennis! I enjoy womens tennis more but i dont try to pretend that its on the same level as mens tennis. :o

:yeah: @ goran!!

May 13th, 2004, 04:34 PM
I rue the day I ever rooted for him to win Wimbledon after his "ugly" comments about the lineswoman. He's a cad...good-bye, Goran...and good riddance! :wavey:

I have no problems with his comments about being only good for women's tennis...thought that was rather funny. I know he has respect for V & S.

Goran should just quit tennis. Go away quietly. Why does he continue in "hoping" to play Wimbledon. He knows they will give him a wildcard, which takes a place away from someone more deserving. I would rather see some awful Brit player lose in the first round rather than watch Goran having to drop out of the match after the first set, like he did in Miami this year. At least the Brit guy would give his all for however many sets he needs.

It's a shame when players don't know when to give it up. I really hope none of my favorite players continue past their "sell by" date. (Are you listening Andre?)

:haha: :haha:

Goran is so funny. Thinks he could actually hang with the Williams sisters. How funny.

:help: to all of you who took him seriously

I think in a another situation his comments could be taken as a joke, but comments like his to the media only encourage second rate coverage of women's tennis.Alot,of the sports media are very mysogynist[sp]and feel its beneath them to cover women's sport.Imo,he ended up coming off as catty, and bitchy.

Goran, likes to make comments like this all time,I wonder if he can take as good as he gives.I worked with a guy who liked to make comments about particular groups, usually women.Insulting comments. When women would take offence, his usual response was smirk, and say "I was only kidding." Well he was of Japanese decent, and had ABSOLUTELY no sense of humour when it came to Japanese jokes. :o

I never heard the "******" comment! what did he say?

May 13th, 2004, 08:22 PM
Funny wonder why he picked Venus and Serena , instead of Kim and justine? I guess the perception is that Serena and Venus are the best on the WTA tour.

May 13th, 2004, 08:29 PM
Is he taller than Lindsay? :p

May 13th, 2004, 08:30 PM
Goran seems to do a lot of talking about Venus and Serena. He likes them...he really likes them!

May 13th, 2004, 08:37 PM
I never heard the "******" comment! what did he say?

1) Wimby 2001 (when he robbed Rafter), he said this during a press conference (after his win, I believe) about a linesman: "Then I hit another second serve, huge. And that ball was on the line, was not even close. And that guy, he looks like a ****** little bit, you know. This hair all over him. He called it. I couldn't believe he did it."

(Source: http://www.shame.org/detail.html?62)

2) 2001 Indian Wells Post-match interview:

Q. In breaking a racquet, is it mostly in the wrist?

GORAN IVANISEVIC: Hey, sometimes I watch the TV, and then I see the guys when they throw the racquets. They throw it like a ******, you know. They throw it not to throw it. When you throw the racquet, you throw the racquet. I mean, you break. Sometimes doesn't break, thanks God. But you throw the racquet. You don't throw it and it's going like this. You have to smack the racquet, you know, or you have to get anger.

Goran  .

He may not be desperate enough for mixed doubles, but I doubt the WTA is desperate enough for him yet.

Not so sure  With everybody injured and Navratilova playing singles at RG, WTA looks desperate

May 13th, 2004, 11:06 PM
Serena and Venus both list him as one of their favorite players ;).
