Clijsters, Fish, Kafelnikov out of French
Belgian, U.S., Russian stars suffering from injuries

PARIS - Kim Clijsters withdrew from the French Open because of a lingering left wrist injury.

In a brief statement, the tournament said Wednesday the Belgian’s spot in the draw will go to Catalina Castano of Colombia.

Clijsters was the French Open runner-up in 2001 and 2003.

Other withdrawals announced Wednesday: 1996 French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov and U.S. Davis Cup player Mardy Fish.

Kafelnikov, who is semiretired, will be replaced in the field by two-time Roland Garros finalist Alex Corretja, and Fish’s spot goes to Greg Rusedski.

Clijsters’ injury was first diagnosed two months ago as a stress reaction. Later, a half-inch tear was found in her left wrist. The former No. 1-ranked player is right-handed but uses a two-fisted backhand.

On Friday, Clijsters’ Web site said she would pull out of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament, which starts May 24. Her coach told a Belgian radio station she needs to take five weeks off.

Other players who pulled out of the French Open earlier: Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, Rafael Nadal of Spain, Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, and Alina Jidkova of Russia.

He's done some damage to his foot, possibly broken it. He's also out of the Olympics.

LOL at Kafelnikov in the headline. Semi-retired is a bit of an understatement - has he even played a match this year ?

As Venus won't be fully healed by then, I doubt she wants to risk an early upset (or aggravate the ankle B4 Wimby). I don't expect her Back B4 Eastbourne.

Q. Do you think that Venus will be in Roland Garros or not?

SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, definitely. She's looking forward to playing. I don't think anything could keep her away.

I think her ankle will be fine and she only has 4th rd pts.
to defend. I think she'll definitely be there.

She doesn't feel she's in good enough shape to compete
and I'm not sure what's up with the foot.

Injured Blake, El Aynaoui pull out of French Open
May 17, 2004

PARIS (AP) -- James Blake (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/29/) and Younes El Aynaoui (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/6/) pulled out of the French Open on Monday because of injuries.

Blake hurt his neck and spine in a freak accident while practicing in Rome this month after losing at the Italian Open. The American fell while racing to a drop shot and slammed into the net post.

Morocco's El Aynaoui has a right foot injury and probably will have surgery soon, French Open spokesman Christophe Proust said. El Aynaoui pulled out of the Australian Open in January and hasn't played in a tournament since.

Harel Levy (http://rd.yahoo.com/SIG=129dk3hma/M=220133.4911822.6077891.1414694/D=sports/S=95862560:LREC/EXP=1084895820/A=2137930/R=2/id=noscript/SIG=11a7ci7a6/*http://www.travelocity.com/?Service=YHOT) of Israel and Christophe Rochus (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/263/) of Belgium were given spots in Friday's draw.

The tournament, where play starts next Monday, also announced that the final wild-card invitations were given to Frenchmen Julien Boutter (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/293/), Jean-Rene Lisnard (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/240/) and Stephane Robert.

Earlier this month, 2001 and 2003 French Open runner-up Kim Clijsters (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/49/) pulled out because of tendinitis in her left wrist, while Mardy Fish (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/353/) withdrew with a hip injury.

Other withdrawals include: Paul-Henri Mathieu (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/362/), Jarkko Nieminen (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/13/), Rafael Nadal (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/599/), Iroda Tulyaganova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/163/) and Amanda Coetzer (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/137/).

Defending French Open champions Juan Carlos Ferrero (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/38/) and Justine Henin-Hardenne (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/319/) were sidelined recently but are expected to play.
