No sweat for Capriati in Rome
May 12, 2004 ROME (AFP) - American fifth seed Jennifer Capriati (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/97/) swept into the third round of the Rome Masters, barely breaking sweat in her straight sets defeat of Maria Vento-Kabchi (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/205/).

Capriati, beaten by Serena Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/134/) in the semi-final here in 2002, was rarely troubled in a 6-2, 6-1 victory against the unseeded Venezuelan at the Foro Italico.

Winner of four WTA singles titles, including three Grand Slams, Capriati will play either Argentine 12th seed Paola Suarez (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/112/) or unseeded Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin in the last 16.

Capriati, forced to withdraw from the Australian Open this year due to a back injury, said the Rome clay court tournament was the ideal preparation for Roland Garros, which is less than two weeks away.

"Everything is pointing towards the French Open , but of course I want to do well here," said the 29-year-old, who was overwhelmed in the semi-finals of the German Open last week by Amelie Mauresmo (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/166/).

"I think I need to maximise my strengths and it's just a matter of getting some confidence and playing the way I should play."

Dally Randriantefy's prize for beating Russian Vera Douchevina is a third round match against top seed Serena Williams. Randriantefy, from Madagascar, won 6-0, 6-3.

Capriati, 29, is on course to meet Serena Williams in the semi-finals should they both progress to the last four.

ROME -- Jennifer Capriati easily reached the third round of the Italian Open on Wednesday, while third-seeded Anastasia Myskina was upset by Elena Likhovtseva.

The fifth-seeded Capriati dismissed Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi 6-2, 6-1 in just 45 minutes at the clay-court tournament. Likhovtseva beat Myskina 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Capriati, who like Myskina had a first-round bye, dominated her match from start to finish. The American continually moved Vento-Kabchi around from side to side and whipped winners from the baseline whenever she found some open court.

"Practice in the beginning is what I probably will need later on against the other top players," said Capriati, whose best result of 2004 came last week, making the German Open semifinals.

That was her first tournament with new coach Heinz Gunthardt, best known for working with Steffi Graf late in her career.

Capriati now plays No. 12 Paola Suarez, a 6-2, 7-5 winner against Tatiana Golovin.
