A thread for this up and comer.

She keeps improving and her results keep coming! Good win over Hsieh - who's in terrible form, but hey Aussie girls are usually good at playing people back into form! Running Gadjosova so close a week back was great too :)

She seems to be a junior with some true grit. I saw her a year ago and was impressed that when things get tough she doesn't hang her head or go for ridiculous shots.

Will she get the French Wildcard:confused:

Go Sophie :bounce:

Does anyone have any information on Sophie they can share? What is her best surface etc.?

SM
May 14th, 2004, 04:50 AM
The problem with sophie is she is she cana nd does hi every shot, but doesnt hav e particular weapon to just finish the points at will. She does mix it up very well tho with a versatile single handed backhand, and seems to play the right shots instead of just going "for ridiculous shots" when things arent going her way. It will be interesting to see how far she will go, but im sure she can make the top 150..

oh and a side note - i have noticed she is getting stronger esp since the first time i saw her play...she looks more muscled and has improved her serve too...

it will be interesting to see what happens with daniella dominikovic. this girl is loaded with talent and has not proven much of herself at international level other than a few god performances in doubles with evie. interesting that she won the sydney hardcourt champ's last year over dubravka cupac 6-4 6-2 but she hasnt done much since.

broncosven

TS
May 17th, 2004, 11:12 AM
When I first saw Sophie I knew she had the talent but back then (18 months ago) she was far too slight and not nearly as powerful as the other girls. It was just a matter of maturing physically.

She's 18 now, and has developed a stronger frame and that is now paying off. She has always been the type of player where you can tell she will keep getting better with experience and age...her game needs time to mature. She's got a great work ethic and now with a top 300 (or thereabouts) ranking, she's on the right path!

I've only seen her once, at the Australian Open this year when she lost to Lindsay Lee-Waters (3-6 1-6). Don't remember much about the match, except that she showed plenty of passion. Very vocal. But easily frustrated.

SM
Jun 28th, 2004, 11:30 AM
i think she plays Vojislava Lukic next (if Vojislava won...she has been incredibly inconsistent for a former top ten junior).

This is a big opportunity for Sophie to post her biggest win in juniors. Vojislava is a typical baseliner who likes clay and doesnt like grass. As long as Sophie moves forward and is aggressive, she should cause Vojislava problems. :)

guys sophie played a former top ten junior who has won grade 1s and 2s...

true lukic isnt in good form but she sure must be talented and must have lifted a gear and played a great match which she dure is capable of...i think sophie taking an easy 6-3 set off her shows sophie can play to a high standard and maybe just felt some pressure this being wimbledon and all..

Yes! I was really impressed today with Sophie! (saw a lot of talent.)
But at the same time a lot to work on. But match play will help! Just a pity she kinda went off track and made so many UE in 2nd n 3rd sets.

And how did her brother die? That is awfully sad but maybe she can use it as inspiration like Loretta Harrop (bro) and Justine (Mum.)

sophie is hot! :hearts:

dunno wat hapened to her bro just heard kerryn pratt say it during syndey tv coverage it was during the 2nd set so they prob already talked about it during the match but i didn't hear it!

sophie has a lot to work on but the signs are there!

the backhand needs to be a bit flatter at times

and if i had the chance i would get Sophie together with Casey, Jaslyn & Monique and bang there heads together then blast their coaches!

they need to learn (i know im tough but i feel you have to be!) not to hit so much str8 down the middle of the court while allowing their apponents to move them around and get out of position! i believe this is the reason y sophie and casey lost to perova and kostanic along with lack of experience and a shit draw!

Would be nice to see Sophi play Pattaya WTA next week but i doubt it so good luck in aus or us wherever she plays next!

From what I read, her brother died during a study trip to China in May last year...

Just awful...I don't know what the circumstances were, but that would just be horrible, absolutely horrible. She played junior Wimbledon a month or so later and tried to get on with things, no wonder she had that terrible run of form mid year...brave girl to go out there so soon after such a big BIG tragedy.

Here's to a breakthrough 2005

What are you talking about??????? Sophie was hitting down the middle to try and alleviate Petrova from hitting as many angles, especially on the backhand. It was purely tactical in that match and it worked well! When you're playing a power hitter the last thing you wanna do is open up the court for them to hit cross court or down the line, by hitting down the middle your opponent has less to work with and chasing down balls is far easier because you generally wont be taken as far wide out of the court!

As for Casey, she just ran out of puff plus Kostanic has a far better serve! Casey needs to shed weight if she is gonna break through this year.

As for Monique, she needs to develop a serve because at the moment hers is even worse than Caseys. I really believe that is one of the things holding Monique back. Her first serves were only about 140-150km and the second serve was shit!

And Jaslyn, well she has really improved on most areas of her game, her serve is better, first and second, her groundies are better, she has plenty of variation, and her fitness is great. She just needs to develop more of a weapon, maybe just try and add a bit more sting to everything but she's formed the solid base now to crack the top 250 I believe!

broncosven
Jan 23rd, 2005, 07:56 PM
All the girls have the ability to crack the 200 for sure

some unfavourable draws didnt help but this year most girls on the cusp (watson, dellacqua, hewitt, ferguson, breadmore) all managed to win a match whether it be MD or Qualies

I actually though Sophie's backhand was quite good against Petrova . . making it so loppy got Petrova really angry and got many errors from trying to make her own pace and hitting UF errors

Apr 7th, 2005, 09:22 AM
2nd round of the 25k:
Elise TAMAELA (NED) defeated Sophie FERGUSON (AUS) 61 62

1st round she beat a WC 63 64 or something like that...

Doubles at the moment, dont know first round result...

According to ITF website - she is in the MD for 25k in USA next week, withdrew from the 75k the week after for a 10k tournament in japan where she is seeded 1st by over a hundred ranks, then 25k the week after! then after that i'd assume she'd play in gifu - 50k where she made the final last year i think...

GOOD LUCK SOPHIE! :D

Posted this in a random thread before - I think more people will respond here - gooking at how Stosur started out - and the parallels...do you reckon Sophie will be where Stosur is in 2 years? Or even........where Molik is!!!! :D
Sophie is definitely better than Sam was at the same age. I remember seeing Sam lose 6-0,6-3 to Mareze Joubert when mareze was ranked in the 300's & to Catalina Cristea 6-4,6-1 within the last 4 years (I think). I actually felt uncomfortable watching her play as she stuffed up so much. At the time, I honestly thought she wouldn't make top 150. At the same age Sophie is better. Sophie just needs to learn how to volley (then again sam still needs to learn how to hit a backhand in more than 3 times per rally!!)
Gillibean - just go for the other Aussies. I'd always go for Mireille Dittmann, but hey an Aussies an Aussie!!

New Zealand's Marina Erakovic has scored a big win at the ITF Futures tennis tournament in Japan.

The teenager has thrashed Australian Fed Cup player Sophie Ferguson 6-1 6-0 in the second round.

The fifth seed is nearly 200 places higher than Erakovic in the world rankings.

gillibean
Aug 21st, 2005, 02:34 PM
This week Soph played in Nanjing, but I don't know her singles results, just know her and Casey lost their semis for doubles. She is also in the MD for 50k Beijing, China, 5-11 Sept. This provides a small opportunity for her to maybe play in the Bali WTA quallies on the 12-18, but the Aussie Challengers I think start on the 19th! So its a bit busy.

Sorry Dunno How Soph Went In Nanjing Just Got Scores For Casey From A Contact At Itf!

Best We Can Hope For Sophie Was A Quater Final Loss Coz She Didnt Make Semis!

I Dont Think Casey And Soph Are Going To Bali Now Coz Im Pretty Sure Casey Is On Her Way Home Coz She Pulled Out Of $50k Beijing In A Weeks Time And Pretty Sure Her Next Event Is Gonna Be The Aussie Challengers But Not 100% On That Coz Poxy Wta Wont Send Me Bali Entry List!

SeanyQ
Aug 22nd, 2005, 06:06 PM
I'd rather they bypass Bali (the more Aussies that do, the better!) & do some hard work in AUS before the challenger circuit starts. I doubt it's worth it financially (among other things) to go to Bali just to bomb 1st round again.

no if anything would better her chances especially if she can win a few matches!

you never know if she can find some form and make a few main draws she could possibly get direct entry, she would have to improve dramatically from last few weeks though!

you never know some sections of the asian tournament draws are easier than aussie challengers!

WTA Bali Tier III - Quallies!!!!!!! Only a 16 player Quallie Draw!!!
Round 1: (7) Sophie Ferguson (AUS) v Clare Curran (IRE)

Info on Curran:
Last game played was 1r qualies, same event, last year
She lost 6-7(5) 7-6(9) 6-3 to our very own Lauren Breadmore!
She is currently unranked.

4 out of the 16 *cough* 15 Qualifiers will get through which means Soph has to win 2 matches and its sweet! Although playing the number 1 Quallie seed in the next round...hmm - Muller is ranked 135 and went through quallies at the US Open where she drew Kim Clijsters in r1 and went down 61 62...clearly on form though. The week before Muller beat our own Pratt in quallies for Toronto 6-0 3-6 6-4, and week before that beat Nuria Llagostera Vives in MD r2 of a Tier IV where she was a LL and Nuria was seeded 4th but hey at least her and Soph have something in common...beating Nuria!! Parallel lives really, in March, M Diaz-Oliva beat her 63 64, a worse scoreline than Soph vs. Diaz-Oliva......I guess the underlying message is.......

Good luck Soph!!!!

PS. I don't know if this means Soph will come back for Mackay on the 19th and then Rockhampton on the 25th or hang around as she is entered in Quallies for 2 WTA Asian events consecutively after this Bali one...

PPS. This is the rest of the Qual Draw- as you can see another Aussie Trudi Musgrave is playing so maybe her and Soph will team up for the doubles?

(1) Martina Muller (GER) bye
(7) Sophie Ferguson (AUS) v Clare Curran (IRE)

(2) Li Ting (CHN) v Ayu Fani Damayanti (INA)
(5) Zi Yan (CHN) v Septi Mende (INA)

(3) Ryoko Fuda (JPN) v Trudi Musgrave (AUS)
(8) Leticia Sobral (BRA) v Tomoko Yonemura (JPN)

(4) Sun Tian Tian (CHN) v Denise Harijanto (INA)
(6) Maria Jose Agreri (ARG) v Mayumi Yamamoto (JPN)

Mackay $25K:
Singles 1r:
(2/266) Sophie vs (454) Thassha Vitayaviroj (THA). 1st ever career meeting. Will play winner of Olivia Lukaszewicz & a qualifier in 2r if she wins.
Doubles 1r:
(4/555) Sophie/Christina Wheeler vs Qualifiers. QF match against either WC pair or more Qualifiers. Sophie & Christina made the SF's of $25k Jackson USA (clay) 2005 in April, but lost the SF on a w/o. So technically they've never lost a match together.

Ok, I have no idea how her QF match will go. I've seen Cindy play like an unranked player & like a top 100 player - so it depends on which Cindy turns up. Singles:

Really disappointing that Sophe cant make an impression in the 25k's. Obviously can play well when totally against the odds, Maleeva, Petrova, L-Vives but finding it hard when she's the favorite.

That's lovely ozfan. Clearly everyone has their off days. She said it's been a tough year so maybe this is the consequence of everything - travel, while doing school subjects by correspondence. She's obviously held it together ok and is going to pick up the pieces in the next few weeks.

Probably has been a tough year, and a big learning curve, her first full year in seniors. (particularly with 2004 and the death of her brother).

I find her game to lack a bit of weight and this would be exposed in the challenger circuit where she would have to generate the pace from the backcourt - whereas with her limited tour matches she thrived on the pace from the Petrova's etc...

I saw her at Bendigo and her qf match with the Korean Lee (or was it Kim??!!) was interesting because Sophe couldn't put her away and eventually the Koreans flat groundies kept winning out.

She'll be thereabouts on the tour- I think its only a matter of time (2 or so years) and matches.

Szili  How has she slipped. Not even challenger competitive anymore. No offence to Sophe but she should've been able to get a game!

It was only a few years back we were touted big things for Szili. Surely no quallie w/c now??

Heard of a couple of likely retirees while at Nuri (from reliable sources). Adriana is one of them. Likely to be studying at uni full time in 2006.

Sophie has entered both Gold Coast and Auckland

Gold Coast is her 1st preference where she is 85th on the qualy next in list
Auckland she is 63rd on the qualy next in list

Early days so heres hoping she can move up the lists or a wildcard comes her way!
