A thread made for me....

Raymond isn't too bad at singles, but she isn't great either, and she is like 3rd or 4th in doubles. i chose stubbs though!!

May 12th, 2004, 02:29 PM
I don't think Anna should be there! She *was* a good singles player even if she didn't win anything *yet*

May 12th, 2004, 02:31 PM
you should have included CARA black

May 12th, 2004, 06:24 PM
I went with Stubbs too.

A multiple GS doubles champion, never did anything great in singles. Did she ever even win a title?

May 13th, 2004, 12:26 AM

Stubbs and Navratilova!

May 13th, 2004, 12:27 AM

Stubbs and Navratilova!

martina nav????? she is arguably the greatest singles player of all time. that was the dumbest post i've ever read, to be quite honest.

Anna K is on the list because she lived up to her potential in doubles far more than in singles, with lots of titles including two slams. I think that's reasonable. The record will show that she was close to being a great doubles player, but it won't show any WTA singles titles.

At the same time, people do keep forgetting how good Anna was as a singles player at her peak. She played the big tournaments and was always dangerous in them; she got deep into the later rounds and regularly took out top players. She held down a position in the lower part of the top 10 consistently for a time because she was no easy-beat among her top-10 peers.

It's an oddity that she has never won a WTA singles title, but it's partly because she seldom played the easier tournaments when she was at her peak, even when she was very young. If she'd done so, she could have picked up any number of low-tier titles.

How about Liezel Huber? Kim Grant?

May 13th, 2004, 03:19 AM
:D Stubbs !!

May 13th, 2004, 05:35 AM
   @ anyone who said Navratilova... pathetic.

May 13th, 2004, 05:55 AM
Im sure their questioning Navratilova's Single Career at present ;)

May 13th, 2004, 10:12 AM
Trudi Musgrave

Well talking about a no brainer. But when it gets down to it, Stubbs is probably the greatest doubles player of all time not to have done well in singles. I can't think of any other player that has had more success in doubles and have literally done nothing in singles.

Caroline Vis comes to mind but she has not had the same success in doubles as Rennae has.

May 13th, 2004, 10:20 AM
Bolegraph or whatever her name was

May 13th, 2004, 10:30 AM
Manon Bollegraf you mean ;)

I voted for McShea, but only since Stubbs already has so many votes. Lisa is better in singles than Rennae though.

Rennae Stubbs

I agree with Zhao..

Definately Vivi. Only good time she has in singles is on clay.

May 13th, 2004, 04:44 PM
Patricia Tarabini
Kim Grant
Caroline Dhenin

Evonne Goolagong

Virginia Ruano Pascual, I can't believe she has not been mentioned yet. I know she upset Hingis at Wimbledon, but that is the highlight of her singles career.

May 13th, 2004, 05:07 PM
Stubbs, shes the worst singles player on the list, but probably the best doubles player.

I think Ruano-Pascual is at least decent at singles. She has three singles titles (Tashkent 03, Budapest 98, Cardiff 97) and two grand slam quarterfinals (Australian Open 03, Roland Garros 95), not to mention a fourth round at Wimbledon 98 and a few scattered third rounds throughout her career.

Stubbs has no titles (although she does have 2 ITF compared to Vivi's 4). She has no grand slam quarterfinals, fourth rounds, or even third rounds. She made one semifinal and one quaterfinal at a WTA tournament in her career.

Stubbs is definitely my choice here.
