Elena Dementieva VS Maria Sharapova

Who will win???

methinks masha-- for i believe to be her first top 10 win...

Maria has a complete game. Elena.....she has nice groundies, and she can be very tough to beat when she digs in and fights during matches, but Maria has it all! And I think one of the WTAworld posters said it best when they said, "How can you call someone (Dementieva) a great volleyer when she only comes in to shake hands?"

I think Maria will win, but Elena could suprise us possibly if maria is hitting error after error.

I think Dementieva is still a favourite - maria won today, tough, against a player who was in a bad form entire year. Dementieva pushed Kuznetzova in 3 last week and after i saw Svetlana play believe it must have been some kind of achievement!

If Elena D can control the df´s, we could actually have a match at our hands here...

well, she never slices, so you're right. but she has a big serve, a good forehand and backhand, a good return, and she vollies well. she is more well rounded than people give her credit for.

Good forehand, good backhand, good return and good volleys does not mean that someone has a complete game...

Having game includes knowing how to use your assets...she does not have a complete game, as yet...lets hope she lives up to her potential and develops one.

I think Dementieva will wear down Sharapova 4-6 6-3 6-2 for a comeback win. Elena is a much better athlete than Maria is and is much stronger than Maria is, too. And her physical superiority will play a major role in this match. And Masha has a minor leg injury which is somehting that could hamper her play. But Elena and Masha always seem to play close matches. Even in the Hong Kong exho. Good luck to both girls.

Dementieva - she pushed Svetlana last week and I think she is a better claycourter.

Masha has reached Round 4 at two Tier I tournaments, namely Indian Wells and Miami.

Sweety, I am not dissing Masha. I am just saying what I think is true. She is just a whacker of the ball, no tactics, not much of finesse.

By her age Anna K. had more than an year-long streak of not losing to anyone ranked outside of Top 15. But Anna was a completely different league in terms of talent.

And Masha has a life-long streak of never beating a Top 10 player.

I like finesse as much as the next guy, but it's not required to succeed at tennis. Plenty of the top players have little finesse. Elena Dementieva is not the queen of finesse either. She's a better mover than Sharapova, so she's certainly the favorite on clay. But Sharapova has a better serve and (it seems to me) more mental strength, so I expect her to have the better career in the long run.

I'm an Anna fan myself so of course I already know how great Anna's on court record is.

But I don't think it's reasonable to say that Masha "has no game to speak of".

But say whatever you want, because from some of your previous posts I get the feeling that you don't like Masha.

Dementieva 7-5, 6-3...the Russian ladies are quite competitive and don't like losing to a lower ranked fellow Russian.

If Dementieva's shoulder is still suspect...I change my mind and say Sharapova in 3 sets. ;)

I agree, I like Maria and want to see her develop into a top 10 player. But at the moment she doesn't have an allround game and just whacks whacks and whacks, the top players have worked this out. She played Kim in LA last year pushed Kim to 3 then they played in Luxembourg Kim lost only 3 games, The same happened with Myskina they played at AO three tough sets, then at IW it was all Myskina. She doesn't seem to have a 'B' game plan.

You're right about this.

Meanwhile, Masha did better against Serena than Dementieva did. And against Capriati - Masha did better than Myskina.

I don't care who wins, but I have the feeling Dementieva is sucky on red clay. Sharapova isn't great either, but I give her the edge

If you only remembered what they were saying about Kournikova when she was 16...

i agree that's the problem with sharapova...she's still very inconsistent...at one tournament she pushes a top 10 player to 3 sets but then at some tournaments she loses in two miserable sets...her game is still one dimensional....which i believed she can improve...with good coaching of course...you can't be a top 5 player just by whacking the life out of the ball...you need to have a game plan..coz definitely at some point in a tourney you'll face a more consistent and stable player than you are...

anyways good luck to both players...if dementieva cant get her 1st serves in...sharapova MIGHT win this but i still think dementieva is a better player than sharapova right now ;)

well it's difficult to say who's gonna win, i'm hoping that Lena will win but i think she's getting it really hard with Masha, it depends on Lenas's serve like Steph said ;) also Lena has more experience, but like i said it's gonna be hard for Lena

Of course I remember what was said about Anna when she was 16 and 17. I still have some of the tennis magazine with her features and profiles. I can only hope Maria won't have the same difficulties than Anna has had to deal with. Especially where injuries are concerned.

And it's not fair to comapre Masha to Anna because they are different kinds of tennis players. Masha is a big girl and a power player. While Anna was an average size girl with excellent athletic abilty and nice hands at the net.
