Ok, I'm pouting cause my fave lost today. ;) Please share in my grief and name five losses your fave has suffered you wish she could have back. I've listed five below for mine. :bigwave:

2002 French Open 128 L Paola SUAREZ (ARG)6-2 5-7 1-6

I flew to Paris and was there to witness this in person. After a successful year in 2001 and a successful clay court season reaching quarters in Berlin and Rome, Sandrine gets a most horrible draw. She's in control of the match until 6-2, 5-4, 40-15, loses two match points and Paola runs away with the match in Sandrine's farewell appearance before leaving the tour to have a baby.

2001 WTA Tour Championships SF L Serena WILLIAMS (USA)3-6 0-6 After cutting down Amelie and Jennifer (to end Jen's chances of winding up as year end Number One) Sandrine ran out of steam and Serena wins the last nine games of the match. Little did Sandrine know that Lindsay would retire after injuring herself on the last point of her SF against Kim. Sandrine effectively would have taken the trophy home had she won this match.

2001 French Open 16 L Martina HINGIS (SUI)1-6 6-2 2-6

Sandrine looks to end a 0-13 mark against Martina in front of the home crowd. She gets whitewashed in the first set (someone actualy throws an egg on the court) but battles back to the delight of the partisan crowd to take the second set. Martina plays a dazzling third set for the victory.

1997 Wimbledon 16 L Nathalie TAUZIAT (FRA)6-4 5-7 10-12

After upsetting Monica then World Number Two in the third round Sandrine falls to countrywoman Nathalie in three grueling sets. I'm sure this one hurt.

1997 US Open QF L Venus Williams (USA) 5-7, 5-7

The closest Sandrine came to making a Grand Slam semifinal.

Serena:
L to Justine SF RG 2003. Man, man, man....if she wins that match, she wins the GRAND SLAM for sure!
L to Martina H QF Oz open 2001. Another of those collapses by Serena. Hated her during those years. Couldn´t close out a match to safe her life.
L to Jennifer QF wimbledon 2001. Yet another collapse....really dissapointing, because Venus was ready to be brought down even that year.
L to Venus SF wimbledon 2000. Shame that one of the most dominating runs at Wimbledon EVER had to end like that.

1998 - Pattaya - Loss to Degucis in the SM, definitely could have won the whole thing.
1999 - Wimbledon - Loss to Grande in the 1st Round, after winning 's-Hertogenbosch.
2000 - Aussie or Wimbledon - Losses in the 4th round, just so that she reached a GS QF.
2001 - Hobart - The injury that killed her Rise In The Rankings! :(
2004 - Any 1 of her losses, I would love to turn her loss at Hobart into a TITLE.

i'd DEFINITELY add monica's "loss" to steffi graf in the 92 wimbledon final. that's the only match she ever played where she didn't want to play her own game. i bet she regrets it big time, as it's a big gap in her trophy case.

2002 QF final loss to Callens in Hawaii. She won the 1st set and lost the second 5-7. She didnt win another game

2003 SF loss to Zvonereva at Bol. Had she won this is would have been her final.

2004 QF loss to Linetskaya in Dothan. Because I was there and saw her loose:(

2004 2nd round loss to Venus Williams in Family Circle cup. She led a set and 3-0. Would have been her biggest win to date.:(

1) 1984 Oz Open vs Helena Sukova - Martina would have won her 7th consecutive slam, and got a calendar grand slam which would have shut a lot of people up later in life who did a backtrack and called her grand slam non valid as it wasnt in a calendar year..The ITF gave Martina one million bucks for her grand slam and recognised it as one at the time..If Martina had won this match it would have taken away the line of "Martina doesnt have a grand slam"...

2) 1994 Wimbledon Final vs COnchita Martinez - The one that got away. Conchita pulled the match of her life out of her ass and has never come as close to playing as good as she did that day...perfect finish for Martina etc etc..

3) 1987 French Final vs Steffi Graf - This would have given Martina 3 career french titles (and one less for Steffi lol), but more importantly it would have given Martina a grand slam victory over Graf on clay, easily Martina's worst surface to go along with ehr grand slam wins over Graf on grass and hardcourt..the fact that Martina served for the match at 5-4 in the 3rd and choked by double faulting twice to lose her serve was a bitter pill to swallow...

They are the 3 that really stand out, If I could change it I woul also have Martina win the 1985 French Final vs Evert and the 1988 Wimbledon final vs Graf.

L to Martina Hingis, Finals, Aussie Open, 1999
Ok, it was a great tourney for her and she truly accomplished so much but can you imagine it? A qualifier winning a Grand Slam and coming from nowhere to stun the world. *sigh* a girl can dream...  ;)

L to Monica Seles, Finals, Rome, 2000
She makes it all the way to the final. And then the idiots here in my City show a frigging telethon and don't bother with covering the final. So I drive four hours away and rent a hotel room just so I can take my VCR and watch/tape the match. Pfffffttttt, the least she could have done is win it. :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

L to Jana Kandarr, Rd 1, Roland Garros, 2001
Need I say more? I don't think so. :fiery:

L to Anne Kremer, Rd 2, Amelia Island, 2002
I got the plane ticket accomodations and went to see her live for the first time. Had tickets for every day of the tournament. First match and I get to watch her self destruct right before my very eyes. I figure she owes me reimbursement for this catastrophe! :fiery:  :tape:

L to Serena Williams, SF, Wimbledon, 2002
After beating Anastasia and Jen she winds up in the SF only to be crushed by Serena. I understand Serena was playing great but Momo was a no show from the gitgo.

L to Venus Williams, SF, US Open, 2002
She just did this to torture me I'm sure of it. 2002 I'm gonna make Sonja pay, must have been her motto. She got to the semis of another slam. The scoreline was so close, yet not close enough.

L to Serena Williams, F, Paris, 2003
First tourney back, such great stuff from her double bageling Elena D only to lose in the final to Serena who was just too good. I'd loved to have seen her get this one just because she was coming back from injury and it was her home tourney. Alas, it wasn't to be...

L to Chanda Rubin, Rd of 16, Miami, 2003
Ok, I see a pattern emerging here. Sonja again gets plane tickets and follows her heart to Miami. After narrowly winning her first round match with Marta (which I'm convinced she only won because linnie, mcb, moon, footfault, and myself were screaming our lungs out, perhaps she was a little fearful of us, "You can DOOO it!" ). She then goes on to defeat Clarisa easily in the next round (Clarisa  ). And again is a mental midget to Chanda Rubin, who was playing great. She explodes, the scoreline tells the tale, and there I am again, left to pick up the pieces *sigh*. :tape: :tape: :tape:

L to Kim Clijsters, Final, Rome, 2003
Beats Lina (Lina  ), Anna S, Jen, and then Serena  and plays competitively with Kim, only to run out of gas in the third set. And I mean she left that tank on empty! :( :o

L to Lindsay Davenport, Final, Amelia Island, 2004
Beats Justine for the second time in less than six months only to peter out in the final against Lindsay. I was sure she could get the win here on clay (Lindsay's worst surface) and once again I was proved wrong. :tape: :tape: :tape:

Sorry, couldn't just do five. OK, now I'm thoroughly depressed, gee thanks Ed, this was so much fun to participate in. :p

I hate any lose that Lindsay has to suffer but the ones that jump out are:

2001 US Open Final lost to V. Williams
2002 US Open Semi Lost to S. Williams
2000 Wimbledon final Lost to V. Williams
2004 AO Quarter Lost to Henin-Hardenne(!!!!!!!!)
2003 Wimbledon Quarterfinal lost to V. Williams

Most of Venus's successes have come at Lindsay's expense so those are my least favorite.

Lucie Ahl:

Lost to Sugiyama 63 46 46 at Wimby '03 - was up 3-1 and had 2 points for a break for 43 in final set - she was playing Ai off the court and just couldn't get her serve in when she needed to. Had she won she'd of been top 150 for 1st time and wouldn't of retired

Lost to Dulko 26 75 26 at US Open '03 - would of been nice for her to win a match in first event

Lost to Boogert 26 67(3) Oz Open '02 - only appearance in final round of qualifying at a gs, was twice 2 points away from 2nd set at 54 and 65 on Boogert's serve. Would have been amazing for her to qualify for a grand slam

Lost to Dokic 67(4) 46 at Birmingham '02 - served for first set at 54, and played very very well throughout but Dokic was jsut a little too good on the day

Lost to Nagy 36 46 at Wimbledon '00 - Would have made the third round, was up 42 in second set, didn't play well at all that day.

For Justine:
2001 Round of 16 loss to Monica Seles 6-4, 4-6, 4-6: After winning back-to-back titles at Gold Coast and Canberra, Henin was looking to make her first serious impact on the tour. After taking out Testud in the previous round, Justine was on a 13-match win streak and managed to take the first off of Seles, who has always been a major force down-under. This perhaps was a blow to her confidence as she went 3-4 in her next tournaments.

Roland Garros 2001 Semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters - This was the first slam that Justine made a serious run for the title. Her draw opened up nicely and Justine took great advantage of it - winning all of her matches in straight sets, with none going past 6-4. But then she ran into her compatriot (who at the time had a dominating head to head against her). Justine won the first set 6-2 and it looked like she would take the match...until she choked under the pressure and allowed Kim enough time to start playing really well. Who knows, if she had won this one, maybe she'd have gotten her first grand slam even two years earlier!

2001 Wimbledon Finals loss to Venus Williams 1-6 6-3 0-6 - Shortly after her Roland Garros disappointment, Justine battled her way to her first Grand Slam final. Having slaughtered former champ Martinez 6-1, 6-0 in the QF and turning the tide against Capriati in a great 3-set SF, Henin ran into the Reigning Queen herself, Venus. Obviously nervous about playing such a dominant player on her favorite turf, the first set flew by in a flash. Juju showed great determination in claiming the second set, but a combination of nerves and Venus taking her level to the stars ended Juju's Wimbledon hopes.

2002 Amelia Island Finals loss to Venus Williams 6-2 5-7 6-7(5) - We all know about this one. I don't even want to talk about it. 6-2, 4-0...

2002 Roland Garros First round loss to Aniko Capros 6-4, 1-6, 0-6 - A sick juju who shouldn't have played in the first place, puts all her heart into trying to play regardless...and supplies one of the biggest shocks of the tourney.

Alicia Molik :p

1. Lost to Kuznetsova 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 (Fed Cup 2004, 1r)

Molik was 2-2 vs Kuznetsova, having lost to her after being 6-3, 6-6 (6-4) up in Indian Wells, nevertheless she played a great match in Russia but when it counted most (third set), again failed to upper her game to a new benchmark and ended up having a heartbreaking loss for Australia  . She would go on to beat Myskina so had she won this, the Aussies would have gone 2-2 into the doubles... a different story altogether. And you know how mcuh Fed Cup means for Aussies...

2. Lost to Panova 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 (Aus Open 2002, 1r)

Alica had two match points  , this was a winnable match against the 28th seeded Panova, Molik was being agressive for most of the match but when it mattered most, she faltered :banghead: , a painful loss :awww: which would see her got 0-3 to Panova, all year. :(

3. Lost to Mauresmo 7-5, 7-5 (Aus Open 2004, 4r)

Most players would be jubilant  with such a scoreline against the 4th seed. But in her first fourth round at her home slam on RLA, Molik was disappointed that she didn't take her chances in a very narrow loss. A minor loss of confidence from this defeat was shown. :hysteric:

4. Lost to Maleeva 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 (RG 2003, 1r)

Molik had come in with terrific clay court results :clap2: , the same could not be said for Maleeva. Having defeated Maleeva before in a slam (US Open 01), this was an opportunity to float through the draw to a 4r vs Clijsters, unfortunately UE's meant it wasn't to be...

5. Lost to Tulyaganova 3-6, 6-4 ret... (Aus Open 2003, 1r)

Not a bad match, but definately tragic/unfortunate :crying2: ! Sprained her ankle in the 2nd set :speakles: and was obvioulsy on her way for a second round match vs Davenport. Remember Molik had been in exceptional form all summer so this was a huge setback :o , thankfully it didn't have the consequences it could have.

Alicia Molik:

1. lt to Mauresmo 7-5, 7-5; R16 AO 2004
Led 40-0 on her serve while down 5-6 in second

2. lt to Davenport 6-3, 7-5; R16 Amelia Island 2004
Led 5-2 in second set before rain came down :umbrella:

3. lt to Tulyaganova 4-6, 6-3 ret.; R128 AO 2003
Alicia was in the form of her life, and had just won her first title in Hobart.

4. All of Alicia's losses to Kuznetsova this year (Indian Wells or Miami, Fed Cup and Rome)
Alicia had a 2-0 head to head over Sveta before their match in Indian Wells or Miami(I can't remember which one). She had two match points but lost. Then, in Fed Cup, Alicia won more points altogether, but lost a heartbreaker. And yesterday in Rome, Alicia lost another 3 setter to Sveta. So in the last few months, Alicia has turned a commanding h2h over Svetlana around to 2-3.

5. lt to Maleeva, R128 RG 2003
Alicia was in great form, Maggie wasn't. This was a great chance for Alicia to win a few rounds at a major. Thankfully, when the chance rose a few weeks later at Wimby, she took it.

96 Wimbledon SF l. to Graf in three sets
96 US Open R1 l. to Po which surely prompted her retirement
95 FO SF l. to Sanchez Vicario
94 YEC l. to Sabatini (cruel scheduling for her)
plus all the losses to fellow Japanese players namely Sawamatsu and Endo who always would lose fuckin easly in the following rounds after taking out Kimiko except 95 AO where Sawamatsu went on to beat Mary Joe to reach the QFs.

Amélie:

The 1999 Australian Open final against Hingis. It would have made an awesome story, would have done wonders for her confidence (then and NOW) and it would have shut Hingis up. That's pretty good.

RG first round 2001. What can I say? :fiery:

Wimbledon semis 2002. After playing like that in the quarters, that HURT.

US Open semis 2002. OMG!!!! THAT REALLY HURT! That day, I rushed through my homework and flung myself in front of the TV. It was 1-1 in the second set. As Amélie started winning this set, I became more and more hyperactive. I ran up the stairs, ran down the stairs, leaped upward... and smashed my head on the ceiling. :o That really hurt. Luckily, I have a thick skull, but my butt hurt when I fell on it. Not dissuaded, I ecstatically watched Amélie win the second set, at which point I really thought she had it. This was such a thrilling, well-played match that even my sister was interested- though we commenced warfare over the eventual result. I was certain Amélie had it... until she actually misfired on Venus's match point. it's fair to say that hurt.

Steffi

1987 Wimbledon Final. One more Wimbledon for Steffi and one less for Martina. Both end up with 8 Wimbledon titles, tied for the record with Helen Wills.

1989 French Open Final. Steffi served for the match! winning this match gives her back to back calender year Grandslams, and 9 straight grand slam titles. Also, one more French Open to tie Chris' record of 7.

1993 Australian Open Final. 5th Australian Open, giving her atleast 5 titles at each grandslam.

With these 3 three titles, Steffi breaks Court's record of 24 grandslams as well!

MAGDALENA MALEEVA

1) Elena Likhovtseva Wimby 2002 (4:6, 3:6) - She blew a big chance there to reach a
Slam Quarter again.

2) Anne Kremer Filderstadt 2002 (4:6, 6:7) - Maggie came fresh off her victory in
Moscow and blew this.

3) Ai Sugiyama Gold Coast 2004 (6:4, 6:7, 3:6) - She was up nealry the whole first
two sets. SF was possible.

4) Silvia Farina Elia Eastbourne 2003 (7:5, 4:6, 4:6) - She was up 3-0 in the 2nd, a
victory would have meant top-
10 again.

5) Paola Suarez Wimbledon 2003 (6:2, 2:6, 3:6) - She was in a great shape and great
on grass and missed a big
opportunity to go far.

I agree with those ones. But I'd also have to add in the 2001 SF Wimbledon loss to Justine. If she had got to that final it would have been fab. She would have had a chance of winning Wimbledon and then going into the US Open, gunning for the Grand Slam.

The most biggest for me was the US Open, if Jen had won against Justine she would have won the tourament, it meant so much to Jen and she has only just got back from that loss. It was a big part of her tennis career. : (

Daniela Hantuchova

1) Lost to Venus in Ausopen QF. Daniela was playing pretty well, had BP when Venus was serving for the 1st set @ 5-4 but her lobby was too long . It was her biggest chance to achieve a GS SF.

2) Lost to Molik in Miami 03 R2. Daniela was playing pretty well, if I'm not mistaken she had 6-2 and 5-0 but she let Alicia come back and lost the 3rd set 0-6 :bigcry:. Her big slump started in that day.

3) Lost to Harkleroad in RG 03 R2. Dani was leading the 1st set 4-1 or 4-2, but lost in a TB. She won the 2nd set with a break up and in the 3rd set Harkleroad was leading 5-1, Daniela fought back and served for the match @ 6-5, but failed.

4) Lost to Asagoe in Wimbledon 03 R2 10-8 in the 3rd set. After a baggel in the 1st set, Daniela lost control of the match and then... :crying2:

5) Lost to Clijsters Filderstadt 02 Final. Daniela played pretty well, it was a good battle but Kim was just better in the crucial moments. It would be Daniela's 2nd title
