View Full Version : Why is Venus so prone to injuries?

She seems to get injured every few tournaments she plays. I really can't fathom why she has to get hurt so often. I don't see anything wrong with her game that could contribute to al those injuries she's been suffering. Is she cursed or what? I really thought she was gonna finally win a GS, espeically the French Open where she would have been the favorite given the other big names are all suspect with injries and illnesses. Maybe her super-model like body is playing a part. It's a shame as a clay specialist, she would have had the best shot at winning another major at RG.

First of all Venus is not a clay specialist. Now that we have that out of the way, I think that she does take all the necessary precautions and she has invested heavily in injury prevention, but I think some of her mechanics are not right, what with her long limbs and all. She also plays very hard. Just my two cents worth

I dont think she is yet out of the FO. I personally think she will do everything in her power to heal and then she will be there in all her glory in Paris. I certainly will be praying for her.

she's plays a high risk game, therefore she will suffer more injuries than others from time to time

most players nowadays play a high risk game..........

She plays such an athletic power game + She's built so lean = Injuries X a big, big number.

Hana Mandlikova and Kathy Jordan had similar problems due to the same reasons.

VENUS had a rapid growth spurt in her preteen years and such rapid and extensive growth in persons typicaly weakens the joints of the body's limbs. This weakening of the joints is further enhanced by extensive stress during tennis traning during that time.

Hence, VENUS has had problems with most of her joints except for her elbws, hips and neck. So far.

Define "high risk game."

You mean in terms of strategy, shot selection (like hitting for the sidelines rather than trying to keep the ball a foot inside the line) or what?

She is prone to injuries because of her body type- long limbed and relatively thin at the wrists, knees, and ankles/feet. What complicates this most for her is that she really doesn't play percentage tennis- she generally does a great deal of running with long, huge steps just after her opponent has already hit the ball, and is quite often wrong-footed, especially on clay, which requires her to start and stop more frequently because the opponent has more time to play percentage tennis against her on clay than on any other surface. It's something she'll just have to live with if she stays on the baseline, however, I do think if she develops a serve-and-volley game, she could substantially cut down on her injuries, and be an even better player!

God, poor Kathy Jordan...that frying pan grip she had on the forehand was scary (are you reading this, Amy Frazier?)!!....was always injured. A knee brace, an arm brace, a wrist brace...yikes!

With a body like that, so lean and fantastic
the poor tendons get stretched
to the end of their elastic
with the length of Her limbs, and the geometry's worked out
they get tested to the limit, when She throws Herself about
in changing direction, the hidden stain is immense
but We only can see, the face so intense
while it's easy to admire Her
flowing crosscourt, hitting and reaching
We can't see what's happening inside Her
the stretching,grinding and screaching

I mean really why cant she be sturdier like Monica Seles...whoops. I mean like Kim Clijsters....whoops. Wait I meant like Martina Hingis...whoops. No no I mean like steffi graf.... whoops. Jen Capriati....nope.

You see injuries plague athletics, its the nature of sports but of course anyone but a fool would have realized this by now.

Daniela has the same body type and plays a hard risk game and doesn't get injured at all (knock on wood). I think it's just a question of susceptibility not of body type.

Yeah.....I think that´s it too. Normally I don´t agree with you on this, but you´re right. Specially in her match against Karolina, she never anticipated the shots or anything....always was reacting, instead of acting. Good point there.
