several players got screwed over last year, as always. namely helen, lol.
karen will probably get screwed over this year coz she's with gbtennisgirls squad, not the lta. emily as well after she had a big fall out with the lta a couple of years ago.
but they are both top 8, so not really any excuses not to give them one
The Lawn Tennis Association have announced that the allocation process for wildcard entry into the 2004 Wimbledon Championships will be tightened in a review of the play-off system introduced in 2003.
In agreement with the All England Club, the wildcard playoffs and pre-qualifying will be amalgamated into one event to be played from Wednesday to Friday during the first week of June.
Additionally, only men in the world’s top 300 and women in the top 250 will be eligible for nomination for a main draw wildcard, unless under the age of 20 for men and 19 for women.
The men’s and women’s events will be played out over three days with the winners guaranteed a main draw wildcard.
It has also been announced that no player will receive any more than three direct wild cards, unless ranked in the world’s top 150, or returning from serious injury in the past year.
The LTA Performance Director David Felgate said:
“We are determined to improve the standards of performance tennis in this country further and these changes to the wildcard system are designed to ensure that the bar continues to be raised. Wimbledon wildcards are not a right, they have to be earned, and those players who step out onto the Wimbledon courts next summer will know that they deserve to be playing in a Grand Slam.”
Players who receive a wildcard direct will be notified after the wildcard meeting to be held on 7 June 2004. All other British players will be eligible to play in the play offs to win a wildcard for Main Draw or Qualifying.
Other wildcards will be allocated by the All England Club for Main Draw and Qualifying thereafter.

they should jsut go abck to the old way. play pre-qualifying right through to the end, and the winner gets a main draw wildcard.
this way is jsut 2 confusing. simply do it on performance, i don't understand why that's so hard? Fir enoughf ro qualies havea play-off, but not for main draw, that's cruel as someone could have a bad day, or a slight fever.

I'M sorry but Brits should not have so man WC... I mean most of them, (except Anne, perhaps Elena) simply don't have the level to compete...
Please give Bulgaraian girls (Sesil), Russian girls (Anna C, Maria K, Alysa K...) - who don't have a GS in their country - the chance to make Wimby a little more interesting in the first rounds.

british players, despite the fact they mainly loose, attract full stands everytime, even for mixed doubles.
no brits would care about maria v alysa, beacuse for most of the people who go to wimbledon, tennis only lasts 2 weeks a year, so don't have a clue who they are.
and anyway, its a british event, so wc's should be given to brits, simple.

Kirsten Flipkens is guaranteed one for Qualifying, if she doesn't get in directly, as reigning Junior Wimbledon champion.
The point you make about performance : it is based on performance. Get into the top 250 and you play Main Draw. otherwise you go into pre-qualies, which I believe will serve for both qualifying and Main Draw wildcards. At least the players have known what the criteria are this year, which was their main gripe before. I'm sure that the process isn't perfect and will need some refining but it's a start.
Don't forget that the LTA only have six of the wildcards, I believe, the other two belong to the All England Club

But this is quite unfair, for there is no Russian or Bulgarian event of that standard... I believe a GS is not only a country event, but just a tennis event - where the highest level of tennis should be shown...

I think that's fair. A lot of the women who get main draw WC's at Wimbledon couldn't even get into the qualifying on their own ranking. If they don't get one for the main draw, tough. They should be grateful they even get one for the qualifying. I think it's good they're trying to avoid a Julie Pullin case, where she gets wild cards for almost ten years straight and never wins a match.
It'll probably look like this
Main Draw
Keovathang
Janes
Baltacha
O'Donoghue
South
Paterson
Borwell
Navratilova (I guarantee she asks for one)

2 Pre qualifying ones
Kristin Flipkens (from winning Junior Wimby last year)
Hannah Collin

lol, how funny would it be if helen comes through pre-qualies. that would make my year!!
every year she had to play that stupid event despite being #6 or #7 in the country, and always had to miss out on b'ham or e'bourne as a result.
it made no sense, as she was a class above most of the other girsl playing there (and to be honest still is) and would cruise through the 3 round no problem.
but then the LTA don't tend to learn from their mistakes.
Grier will get one, partially due to her good from in the states, and partially due to "daddy"
i reckon if karen can get above sarah by surbiton, she's got a good shot of getting picked above her if it comes down to it. i think emily will get a main draw one.
njguido11

grier deserves it not just because of her daddy. won a round in qualies last year even if it was over a brit and than lost in 3, top 5 collegiete ranking which is alot harder than the tournaments over in britain. just being honest dont like when people try to take away from peoples accomplishments just because of who their parents are. Dont forget carly in the main draw

I guarantee that if the tables were turned, that a Russian or Bulgarian event would not give a wildcard to a deserving Brit. The fact it, the authorities spend a lot of money setting up and running Wimbledon and they should be able to give the opportunity to see the fruits of their labour, so to speak.
If Sesil and the like find it harder to get wildcards, then it is just hard luck. I agree with Paul, Brits should get the wildcards for a British event. People don't want to see Sesil Karatancheva as much as they want to see Anne Keothavong.

i know im on here talking about carly getting one. but im just messing around, of course i wouldnt mind it. if it was me and i was in charge id give every single one 2 brits theres nothing wrong with that at all. If you dont have a grandslam 2 bad the brits wanna help out their people. decent amount of money is given even for 1st round losses that can help struggling players

and even if they losoe in r1, that money can pay for a WHOLE year on the tour. gb players find it tough to get sponsors as tennis is only the FOURTEENTH most popular sport for girls in the UK.
players like sesil are rolling in endorsements already, give these girls a break....

Just wondering in the past there has been an agreement with Tennis Australia and London Tennis Association
is that still working this year or not ???
by the way it doesnt matter what the ranking or performance on the day . . .the brit girls have earned the right to represent there country in one (if not the) greatest and most well renowed event in world tennis
best of Luck and hopefully like Elena B a few years ago they can win a couple matches and progress into the draw

i'd imagine play-off will be held on the 9th, with pre-qualies on the 10th and 11th
that way the play-off losers can try to at least make the qualies
id imagine the 4 for play-off will be:
Melanie South
Emily Webley-Smith
Karen Paterson/Sarah Borwell/Katie O'Brien
hopefully Karen will get a chance, but as she sucks against brits im not holding my breath!

[QUOTE=paul_masterton]i'd imagine play-off will be held on the 9th, with pre-qualies on the 10th and 11th
It is one event with a 24-player draw. 1st two rounds on Weds, QFs and SF on Thurs and Final and 3rd and 4th play-off on Fri.
Winner is guaranteed MD WC , with possibly a second going to runner-up, as only four ( Anne, Jane, Elena and Amanda) look like they are going to meet the criteria..Then assume that the losing SF and QF get qualy wildcards

May 22nd, 2004, 05:50 PM
I think we should be hearing about Martina asking for wildcards pretty soon. If she wants to play on clay, what's stopping her from playing on grass, plus LTA is running out of people to give wildcards to.
paul_masterton
May 22nd, 2004, 06:01 PM
pre-qualies were 24 player last year, but i dont think there were any byes as only 3wc's were given so was 3 sections of 8.
by the sounds of this, there must be 8 byes.
I'm guessing 2 finalists will end up in main draw, making 6 Brits. Then the other 2 wil be as AELTC's discretion to sue for matina/alexandra  or another foreigner or couple of brits who played badly or got a bad draw.
I'm a bit worried a bit of a random brit might have a really good week, end up in the MD and be totally out of her depth and get pummeled. I doubt any of the girsl (eg Neri, Dandeniya, Berry) would get through the event, but you never know

OK, can I ask for clarification for the wildcard situation?
Anne, Jane and Amanda are all ranked high enough to receive a main draw WC as they are in the top 250? and Elena will get one because of her injury.
The remaining four is where I am confused. This pre-qualies thing will determine one of them, but what about the other three? I presume as Karen/Sarah/Helen/Emily haven't received three they should be able to get one automatically, but people seem to think that they will have to go to pre-qualies. If they do, are the other three just going to to go foreigners? (like Karatancheva/Golovin bla bla  )
paul_masterton
Jun 6th, 2004, 12:04 PM
winner of pre-qualies gets one
that would take us to 5
lta can giev out one other, most likely to pre-qualies runner-up
final 2 are awarded at AELTC's discretion, but LTA can submit names in preference order of british girls
paul_masterton
Jun 7th, 2004, 08:05 PM
LTA awarded them to:
Elena
Anne
Jane
Amanda
one of AELTC's went to Patty
so in theory LTA have 2 more (play-off winner and most likely melanie or emily if the dont win) and AELTC one more (for Nav?)
but i guess AELTC could overrule LTA's 6th one and give it to another foreigner...or Alex

Helen and Anna, GB #1 and #2, who reached the second round last year beating Schett/Schnyder have been given diddly-squat.
