View Full Version : When did you start following the WTA tour?

I first got into the tour in the '90 Wimbly after watching Jennifer Capriati sent Navratilova packing at the age of 14 and made a GS semifinal for the first time.

I have the impression that most of the board members recently started following the tour cuz I hardly hear names that were active in the early or even late 90s.

I watched once in a while to check out Sabatini in the early 1990's; but
it was the 1994-1996 period where it really got to me. I did remember
Jenn's tabloid era and Monica's tragedy. This was huge news- on
the cover of PEOPLE magazine, Time etc... Also recall seeing
Sabatini on the TONIGHT SHOW w/ Johnny Carson. And off course
who could forget the annual "Why don't the FRENCH love Mary
Pierce?" articles in the newsapapers practically every RG in the
mid 1990's!

I loved seeing the likes of Guga, Rios and Kimiko Date. They
really were the ones to get me into tennis because they were
different from everyone else. I loved their flashier, non-American/Euro centric persona, really stood out like exotic birds among a crowd of
white pigeons. :)

From there I got into Natasha and tried to catch up on her past matches
from the earlier years. Nat got me into the whole Jana/ASV/Hingis/LD
doubles rivalries, then I started to enjoy their singles games too. I was
never really into Steffi, ASV or Monica. They were like the brick wall
of establishment to me back then. ;)

In the latter part of the 1990's I really enjoyed watching Anke
Huber, Van Roost etc... again because that rock solid brick wall
of top 5 established stars were driving me up the wall. This time
Hingis took over. Loved cheering for Lindsay back then and seeing
her climb up to number 1 was a real joy and exciting time. She
was such the under-dog back then you just couldn't resist wanting
her to make it higher and higher. Oh..I really disliked Tauziat!!!
:rolls: Man, she messed up my fantasy final of WIMBLEDON 98
of Jana -vs- Natasha! :p

In actuality, it was the 1996 Australian Open. But, you could say I followed it from infancy. My dad would be watching and I would always root for who I called the "Ahh-Uhh" lady. (Monica Seles)

When Ivanesvic surprised everyone to capture the Wimbledon title as a wildcard by beating Pat Rafter, and I was so sad that Martina H was sent package by ViVi in the first round. Since then, I started to follow every matches of Martina and get more and more addicted to tennis until now.

OMG - scary and incredible to see that 70% of respondants started following tennis after Seles was stabbed and Navratilova had retired and a full 80% after Evert's departure in 89. Makes me feel very old

Ive always watched Wimbledon religously since about 1991, when Steffi won, butwe never had sky, so for a long time I used t9o just think that Wimbledon was like the only tennis event there was. I started watching tennis more seriosuly when I got Anna Kournikovas Smash COurt Tennis for Playstation, and she became my favortie player after Steffi retired . Then in 2002 when I had Sky, I saw Anna playing I think Berlin or Rome, and she lost, and I was like, oh I hope she can win soon again, I should go and check when shes next playing. It kinda went from there, as I stared to watch the whole WTA , not just the slams or Wimby, just following Anna through the season. I also started to support other players on the tour to.

I remember Richard Krijcek winning Wimbledon in 1996 with that streaker. I really got in into tennis in mid99 after watching a classic Queens final between Henman and Pete Sampras.

After seeing Julie Halard on TV during Wimbledon 92, I certainly took a greater interest, but it was probably the 94 (?) French Open where my interest hit the roof...I put a few pounds on JHD to win (200-1!) the French Open, fully expecting an early exit, as was more usual in GS tournies...instead she had a memorable run to the Quarters (beating Zvereva and Davenport on route), even giving eventual winner Sanchez a bit of a scare in a memorable second set.

I can remembr the RG crowd now...JULIE! JULIE! JULIE! :)

From then on I had a great interest in the tour and in particular JHD's results, up until her retirement, since when Ive lost a lot of that enthusiasm.

Umm, Gaby was on the Tonight Show??? Are you sure??? I'd be really surprised if that was true and I wasn't aware of it (I was and am a huge fan). I know she was on the Arsenio Hall show, and I know Johnny Carson is a big tennis fan ahd he's had players on his show (young Monica Seles wearing a terribly gaudy flowered dress, Michael Chang who admitted he once had his parents accompany him on a date with a girl, etc.), but this is the first time I've heard of Gaby on it...

To follow the WTA Tour....last year, during the Ausopen.

I got so much interest on Daniela, in the Fed Cup 02 final, that I decided to follow it ;)

B4 that I used to watch some GS's matches, but it was hardly ever, only if I was changing channels on TV and they were showing tennis....I didnt use to follow scores, order of play, check the next TV broadcasting and things like that...

 OK, I have to confess that I'm rather old (50- something) and have watched women's tennis since the days of pro-am tours in the 60s and the Virginia Slim Tour starting in '73. BJ King, Rosie Casals, Margaret Smith Court, Ann Hayden, Virginia Wade and others were the big stars in that bygone period.

The girls were not quite as athletic nor were they as glamorous. But it was worth watching.

It's great to see the evolution in women's pro sports. The girls today are bigger, stronger, far more athletic. But they are also more glamorous.

There's just no combination on earth like beauty and athletic strength. That's why I love the WTA! :hearts:

gogo - Not exacly sure which year it was but, I remember getting a fleeting glimpse of Chrissie's frilly knickers and, Shrivers hair-do, lol also those huge plates of meat she has. I was lucky enough to see my heroine at that time, Hana Mandlikova @ Wimbledon
