Lena plays Zi Yan, who is 19 and ranked about #170. In doubles, Lena stays with her Warsaw partner -

Ruano Pascual / Suarez vs Bye
Peschke / Rittner vs Dementieva / Sprem (WC)
Pratt / Sharapova vs Tarabini / Tu
Bovina / Chladkova vs Callens / Mandula

Udachi Lena! :D But it's too bad she doesn't like to play doubles with one of her compatriots. :(

Lena said "I'm good friends with all the Russian girls, we are like one big team."
That was in Estoril. But I guess she's better friends with Chladkova and Callens.

Lena is fortunate again to get another winnable 1st round match.

Then, a loss to Sveta.

Sveta had a bandage on her left thigh today. I will not be surprised if she withdraws.

Sveta is so thick and strong and plays so much tennis that she's going to suffer from alot of muscle strains in her legs in her career. She just needs to know when to pull back and take some time off.

I hope Bovina gets to play Kuznetsova in Berlin. If Lena could pull off the upset that would do wonders for her confidence.

It won't.

Lena already has 2 wins over higher ranked players this year (Serna, Dokic) that were "right place, right time" scenarios.

She'd need another week like Moscow or Filderstadt, to build the confidence... but she'd just get injured again in a month, so it's a moot point.

Actually, this is a good draw, for a Tier I. Sveta might withdraw, and Lena D. hasn't played. Lena can do well here. If she plays decent tennis.

Last week, Lena's seed in the 2nd round withdrew.

It didn't work out so well.

Schiavone beat Mauresmo. So she was playing well. This could turn out to be a soft section.
It's certainly better than being in the top half.

Good luck in Berlin. At least to be seeded at RG seems more than a possibility.

Meaningless fact:

Lena has not lost in the 1st round since US Open... that's like 10 tournaments.

Although she hasn't been playing well... she's at least winning most of the matches she should be.

Lena was down 6-7(5), 2-5, but came back to win 11 of 13 games.
Lena plays doubles against Els tomorrow.

This clutch come from behind win for Elena is a step in the right direction for her. And this even got the brooding Lina to smile! :D

Next for Lena is probably Sveta. I saw the Warsaw final, and Sveta was not playing well, and had her left thigh wrapped.

Lena hasn't played well this year. I haven't had a chance to see her play. To see what's going on.
But I like this draw. It's a good week for a surprise quarterfinalist.

Lena better hope Sveta is injured, because that's the only way she's winning.

Can't say this scoreline is surprising...

But, the sad part is that Lena was beating Sveta in 2002-03... and now look at their careers.

You were right about this match, Lina. You knew Svetlana would hammer Elena and she did. :) I don't blame you for being concerned about Bovina. Last year she looked like a future top 10 player for most of the year. But this year injuries and a lack of confidence has been her downfall. She still has time to save her year. But she needs to get it in gear quickly.

Lena needs to get a good doubles partner. The French Open is only 19 days away.

I don't know... I don't think Lena has the ability to save her year.

I wish I knew what the hell was wrong with her...

Her service speed has drastically dropped this year, and she's hardly ever holding... and players are hitting more winners & UE's against Lena.

She has no chance of reaching her potential while playing like this... and she's been lucky to even get the wins she's had thus far in 2004.

Lena is on the entry lists for Rome, Strasbourg, RG, Birmingham, Eastbourne, and Wimbledon.
She's going to be like Dokic, and play every week.

- L i n a -
May 5th, 2004, 10:16 PM
Lena won't play all of them... she'll certainly take at least 1 week off in there.

goldenlox
May 5th, 2004, 10:17 PM
I think if she doesn't get too far into the draw, she will play every week. Dokic does it.

- L i n a -
May 5th, 2004, 10:51 PM
No... Lena is different from Dokic, and the other Russian girls.

She won't play many tournaments. She's always been like that.

Lena just played Estoril, Warsaw, and Berlin. We'll see.

If Lena really is weaker than she used to be then she should be working with a nutritionist to help her gain weight and increase her strength.
