Mauresmo ousted, Venus advances at Warsaw tennis

WARSAW, Poland (Ticker) - Venus Williams moved closer to a second straight final at the J&S Cup, but Amelie Mauresmo will not be there to defend her title.
Williams crushed Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, 6-1, 6-0, in a quarterfinal match Friday at this $585,000 event to extend her winning streak to nine matches.

Last year, the second-seeded American was forced to retire from the final against Mauresmo in the third set with an abdominal injury that plagued her the rest of the season.

Williams claimed her first title in more than a year two weeks ago at the Bausch & Lomb Championships:confused:   and won a pair of Fed Cup singles matches last weekend.

The top seed from France, Mauresmo lost to No. 9 Francesca Schiavone of Italy, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. She was a handful of points from victory, but fell apart after losing the second-set tiebreaker, dropping the last 11 points.

Schiavone lost only five points in the third set en route to her second semifinal of the season. She takes on fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia on Saturday.

Kuznetsova dispatched sixth seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, 6-1, 6-4, in 77 minutes. She easily won the first four games of the first set, but the second set was more of a challenge.

With the set tied at 4-4, Farina Elia double-faulted to give the break to Kuznetsova, who needed four match points to close out the victory.

Vera Zvonareva advanced to a meeting with Williams after the third-seeded Russian defeated No. 8 Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi of Israel, 6-3, 7-5.
