Amelie Mauresmo made Francesca Schiavone's life miserable in their prior meetings. The third-ranked French woman had not dropped a set to Schiavone before today's quarterfinal clash at the J&S Cup in Warsaw. But today, Schiavone enacted a measure of revenge, toppling the top-seeded defending champion 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
The 22nd-ranked Italian takes on fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, who crushed Italy's Silvia Farina Elia, 6-1, 6-4, in today's earlier quarterfinal. That match presents a similar challenge for Schiavone, who has yet to take a set off Kuznetsova in two career meetings.

Mauresmo was on the verge of victory in the second set, but Schiavone refused to relent and battled back to take the second set. In the third set, Schiavone stepped up her play and Mauresmo mentally dissolved as the Italian won 11 consecutive points to close out the match.

Third-seeded Venus Williams, the tournament runner-up last year, meets veteran Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva later today. The winner of that match will play either Anna Pistolesi or third-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva in Saturday's semifinals.

I'd rather see this at Warsaw and Amelie doing well at Roland Garros ;)

This is very true. Amélie hasn't been having an easy time lately with her father's death and the injuries, and she might as well get the bad matches out of her system now.
