View Full Version : Venus seems to be on her way to another claycourt title.

After her confidence-building win at FCC, Venus isn't looking back. She said then: "Let's begin the year from here on". With her performance so far at JSC, she wasn't kidding. She's delivered:

46-62-60 to F. Zuluaga
61-60 to M. Maleeva

Both of these opponents are considered super good claycourt performers, yet the ending sets are all bagels. That's indicative of Venus's capabilty on dirt and dedication to success on the court.

We shall see how she does against Vera Z. next.

Carry on, Vee.

Always a telltale quote which shows not to take something seriously... Maleeva a superior claycourter :tape:

Vera Z has the tools to beat Venus on red clay... but I don't think she'll win. However, Sveta and her megawatt forehand may just be waiting in the final to prove that Dubai was no fluke.

I don't really think she has proved that much. FC title...good, but no really impressive wins...here she won't even have to beat a top ten player to win the title. If Justine had these draws, nobody would claim that she has proved dominance by beating the likes of Maleeva. I will say, however, that I hope she gets an opporutnity to play her sister, Kim, or Justine soon. That is when we will find out if her play is impressive or rusty.

M. Maleeva has a W-L of 131-105 (1.248) on hard, 102-64 (1.594) on clay.
F. Zuluaga has a W-L of 46-40 ( (1.150) on hard, 61-31 (1.968) on clay.

These numbers tell me were're dealing with claycourt specialists savvy players. "Superior" is your own word.

The rest, we shall see. I have the feeling Venus is "on"; and that's all she needs IMHO.

=======================
P.S. (new edit)
Due to a few raised eyebrows from some fan groups, let me settle one issue which BTW is outside the main focus of this thread.

Magdalena Maleeva's Win-Loss Records:

All Hard Clay Grass Carpet Indoor Outdoor
W-L 375-238 131-105 102-64 32-20 110-49 134-71 241-167
ratio 1.576 1.248 1.594 1.600 2.245 1.887 1.443

>All(avg)? No ~Yes ~Yes Big Yes Yes No

(Career Titles: 10; Age: 29; Current rank: 24; Highest rank: 4 on Jan/29/1996)So, that makes her a very good carpet-court player and a decent claycourter. Hoping everybody is happy now, let's join hands in celebration of the amazing turn-around of Venus's performance this year.

I'm afraid to say that I don't think that Venus will win this tournament. I originally posted that Amelie would win and beat Vera in the finals.

Vera will beat Venus in the semi-finals and will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final beating her in straights.

Please, you must be nuts. She is playing on slow stuff. By the time she step on grass and hardcourts the tour is toast. Venus needed match conditioning. She need to re-find her ball placement. She needed to re-spark her mental attitude. She needed to dig-deep within. She has.

She has step-up. By the time Kim and juju get off their sofa's and back on the courts, Venus will be standing poised, conditioned and ready to take them out.

Whose waiting, Venus is performing these deeds right before your very eyes. But you can't see it.

You best believe the tour is taking note of it - and they are getting scared, very scared.

By the time the French Open roll out. Venus will have her fear factor back in place.

Even if you are right, you still have to think about Serena. Outside of that, even Conchita managed to take a set off of a "dominant" Venus. Conchita is still good, but nothing comapred to JHH and Kim. I am not saying Venus may not go on to win the French, but I just think we are being a little hasty in saying she is THE dominant player. Loit won two tournaments in a row on clay, but we don't call her dominant because of the people she beat. I am effectively saying the same thing about Venus. She has beaten better people than Loit, but certaintly not the best.

I'm sorry if you think I ruined the thread. That wasn't my intention @ all. What Greeny did was actually funny to me. That's all I was trying to do. Nah, I've actually been watching JHH since she was in Challengers and have been impressed. After her match against Venus @ Amelia Island, she stopped and talked to me for a good ten minutes. She was so soft spoken and nice. I'll always be one of her fans.

I guess a better question would be: Why would anybody who's not necessarily a fan of a particular player go into a thread where there are definite fans of a particular player? I know that I'm rabid about Venus right now.

While I believe that Venus respects both Kim's and Justine's accomplishments, the fact remains that she has played a combined total of 15 matches against them and they have only won three matches. Granted both Kim's and Justine's best wins have come on clay, Venus's weaker surface (although I would argue that carpet is her weakest surface), but both Kim and Justine have been injured and a resurging Venus with a large head to head advantage on them is not a player they want to face. So for those who keep arguing that Venus hasn't faced anyone who can beat her, you have to realize two things. First, her best competition isn't playing right now. Serena, Justine and Kim are all recovering and Momo just lost. Venus cannot control that. Second any wins for a player who has been struggling are good wins. Let's just leave it at that and stop nitpicking. We'll see what happens when everyone returns, hopefully by Roland Garros.

Kim and JHH are good, but Venus would wipe the floor with them right now. They are both clearly less than 100%. Who's the best, hunh, hunh?

As Justine was the hottest player on clay last year, Venus is the hottest player on clay (so far) this year. It isn't Venus' fault or her problem that other players are injured or choose not to play.

BTW, Loit isn't even in the top 20, so why are we talking about her and Venus in the same breath?

Meanwhile, Vee, carry on. Stay positive and take it one player at a time (specialist or not ;) ), one match at a time and one tourney at a time. Detractors will be detractors.

I'll admit that I said her USO victory was taintned because the last two people who won it were not there and most people know damn well that a healthy Venus and Serean would have beaten her on the hardcourt.

I also believe that about next year's AO. If all the top players are there and healthy, I think it is going to be hard for her to defend her title.

Yes (on red clay).

I am not in denial that the sisters are not as good on red clay as Justine is. That's just common sense; Justine grew up in Eurpoe and played on red clay. Venus and Serena grew up in North America, where there are mostly hardcourts.

Oh, OK

Thank you for the information.

I hope she can play because it would be a shame if she didn't have a chance to defend her title. I knew that is was a mistake for her to play in the Middle East in February because she was still sick.

If she does/does not play, will she make the announcement tomorrow or next week?

I hope she can play because it would be a shame if she didn't have a chance to defend her title. I knew that is was a mistake for her to play in the Middle East in February because she was still sick.

If she does/does not play, will she make the announcement tomorrow or next week?
Probably...
Well,I defenitly hope so,it's been some difficult weeks.

i'm not feeling the 'She was working very hard'..She can't practise now,she barely practised very lightly for 20 min on tuesday. If the tests are positive she start training next week but she definitlyisn't going to start to train like she normally is used to.She'll do it step by step.
Trust me,Justine has been resting the last couple of weeks duz she didn't have any choice. She hasn't been on this secret training-place trying to fool everyone to think she's ill and then come stronger than ever.

We'll see what happens when everyone returns, hopefully by Roland Garros.

yEAH THAT'S PRETTY FUNNY TODAY. Yesterday everyone was saying Venus would have trouble w/Maggie and or Patty, and she stomped Maggie into the dirt.

allezjuju,

I am SO ashamed of you and disgusted by the fact that we are of the same Philistine's Society. Most of these people are fair, unbiased, not self-centred human beings and are reasonble, kind, grown-up tennis fans. They would NEVER imply different rules purely because it's not a Venus thread! NEVER. Only fans like you are at fault and basically troublesome.

Members like Ballbuster and Demond are mature, decent people, you shouldn't even think that they are at the wrong. Only YOU are the wrong one here.

Suggesting a thread like this one to only be posted in playerforum is just an inmature behaviour and some Venus fans would NEVER say that in other posts in GM. They would NEVER leave bad comments in threads that are of Justine or other unworthy players like you suggested.

DON'T even ask me to read old threads coz I DON'T care.

Sorry? Talk to the hand coz the head is not interested.

This thread is hilarious...and frankly I think you Juju fans should talk to the ones who started the whole whining :bigcry: about the Venus threads in GM. For one it was an argument that was not winnable and two, Williams fans are not the ones. Not the ones who will let you get the last word. Not the ones who will take any shit lying down. Not the ones who give a rat's ass whether other fan bases like their threads or not.

I hate to tell you but maybe y'all should look within if people are now going into Justine threads and making useless comments. I would get used to it actually. I mean Williams fans are use to it. :D

Anyway, Great win for Venus! She is getting more and more confident and winning the big points which was her main problem...

Venus has clinched the first set 6-3 vs Vera (in the semis) and is now 4*-1 in the 2nd set . She's still on her way, folks, to another claycourt title!

The 1st set stats seem to indicate a pretty ugly match. Too many UE's on both sides.

Set: 1 ** Zvonareva Williams

Aces 0 2
Double Faults 3 2
1st Serve % 65% 51%
Winning % 14/21 (66%) 10/14 (71%)
on 1st Serve
Winning % 2/11 (18%) 9/13 (69%)
on 2nd Serve
Unforced Errors 22 18
Total Winners 4 4
Net Approaches 0/0 (0%) 2/2 (100%)
Break points 1/4 (25%) 2/5 (40%)
Total Points Won 24 35

Nonetheless, we'll take it any which way it comes. :)

After her confidence-building win at FCC, Venus isn't looking back. She said then: "Let's begin the year from here on". With her performance so far at JSC, she wasn't kidding. She's delivered:

46-62-60 to F. Zuluaga
61-60 to M. Maleeva

Both of these opponents are considered super claycourt performers, yet the ending sets are all bagels. That's indicative of Venus's capabilty on dirt and dedication to success on the court.

We shall see how she does against Vera Z. next.

Carry on, Vee.

Now, looking forward, I have a pretty good feeling about Venus's prospects. If she gets past the quarters, I expect to see her at the final.
